*She* 1 Oh that you were like a brother to me who nursed at my mother's breasts! If I found you outside, I would kiss you, and none would despise me. 2 I would lead you and bring you into the house of my mother— she who used to teach me. I would give you spiced wine to drink, the juice of my pomegranate. 3 His left hand is under my head, and his right hand embraces me! 4 I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, that you not stir up or awaken love until it pleases. -Song of Solomon 8:1-4 One of the benefits of marriage is that it offers an easy solution to many of life's problems. Here the bride begins to fret over some of the drama in her life. While the community (represented by the chorus) has been enthusiastically supportive of her marriage, some people have complained that they are too affectionate in public. Distressed by this and worried that people secretly despise her, she entertains a "what if" scenario of her and the husband being siblings so no one would bat an eye at her doting. Her husband responds in the third verse by... well to put it frankly he pleasures her with his hand. So long stress! Suddenly something that looked like an insurmountable problem was shown to be very small. After this moment the bride reflects on and repeats the main refrain of the Song. The daughters of Jerusalem simply must know that this doesn't happen for fornicators. The sexually immoral is haunted by drama, internal conflict, and guilt. Sex becomes less of an asset and more like an albatross hung around the sinner's neck. They are filled with regret instead of appreciation for God's wedding gift to man: it is this that led men like Augustine to despise it entirely and seek to restrict others from enjoying it outside of procreation. But for the Song, sex is not a guilty pleasure if it is within the confines of marriage. To the contrary it is something that becomes a constant source of joy for those who waited - and for those who avail themselves of the opportunity. While it isn't some magical cure-all, it provides joy and closeness between spouses and helps with all sorts of problems in life. So, the bride exhorts all women, wait and enjoy it in its proper time!

Luther on what to do with rioters and uprisings.

The riots in France, like all the terror attacks, grooming gangs, mass fraud, etc. is yet another reason that inviting mass immigration into your country is a sin against your neighbor. "Let's invite a bunch of foreigners who hate our people and give them money" is a statement of hate no matter how much it is dressed up in love.

*He* 1 How beautiful are your feet in sandals, O noble daughter! Your rounded thighs are like jewels, the work of a master hand. 2 Your navel is a rounded bowl that never lacks mixed wine. Your belly is a heap of wheat, encircled with lilies. 3 Your two breasts are like two fawns, twins of a gazelle. 4 Your neck is like an ivory tower. Your eyes are pools in Heshbon, by the gate of Bath-rabbim. Your nose is like a tower of Lebanon, which looks toward Damascus. 5 Your head crowns you like Carmel, and your flowing locks are like purple; a king is held captive in the tresses. 6 How beautiful and pleasant you are, O loved one, with all your delights! 7 Your stature is like a palm tree, and your breasts are like its clusters. 8 I say I will climb the palm tree and lay hold of its fruit. Oh may your breasts be like clusters of the vine, and the scent of your breath like apples, 9 and your mouth like the best wine. *She* It goes down smoothly for my beloved, gliding over lips and teeth. 10 I am my beloved's, and his desire is for me. 11 Come, my beloved, let us go out into the fields and lodge in the villages; 12 let us go out early to the vineyards and see whether the vines have budded, whether the grape blossoms have opened and the pomegranates are in bloom. There I will give you my love. 13 The mandrakes give forth fragrance, and beside our doors are all choice fruits, new as well as old, which I have laid up for you, O my beloved. -Song of Solomon 7:1-13 It would not be difficult to explain the poetic praise the husband heaps on his bride. Some of it is plain, with animals and fruit describing her large bosom, or comparing the splendor of her hair to expensive purple dye. Other parts require a bit of imagination: her thighs are the work of a "master hand" because they get plenty of exercise. When the husband gazes upon her nude form he is ecstatic, elated, full of joy at the sight of her. The text invites us men to sympathize with him. When a boy becomes a man, he becomes interested in and attracted to women. But over the course of rejections, watching others get married, and seeing the landscape covered in broken hearts, he quickly learns that almost all women are off limits. The married ones are a no-go; most of the single ones will say no to any invitation to courtship; even if one does say yes, her family might say no or cause problems; she might say yes but not be loyal. This explosion of rejoicing on the husband's part is one part admiration for her figure and the other part exclaiming "Finally!" Finally someone is his. Finally he can explore the contours of a woman's body and enjoy the rapture of sex. After years of seeing men with their wives being either happy or sad, at last he has his own for sharing the ups and downs of life. Since they waited for marriage, their lovemaking has no hint of guilt, sin, remorse, or fleshly addiction: it is pure joy. Illicit sex robs people of their innocence: Godly sex in marriage matures innocence and makes it stronger. She of course accepts him entirely and gives herself to him. They waited for this after all, so she puts him at ease with a gentle invitation. They aren't just going to "do it" once and then ditch each other. Instead, she brings the good news that they'll be sharing intimacy in the private fields, the hotels, at home, everywhere. Her soft and reassuring words have the meaning that she will always be available for him to express this love with her. That she "laid up" this life for him tells us that she has been wanting it just as much, preparing for nuptial happiness for decades to come.

One of the reasons I don't have a chat for this channel btw. No one needs to see what the goofball porn bots and scammers have to offer.

The latest Godcast is now out! Episode 397: The Problem of Christian “Folk Magic” In another “I regret learning about this” episode, let’s take a listen as SuperLutheran becomes increasingly downcast at the history of folk magic as practiced by Christians who ought to know better. With “Pow-wow” as a case study, we have to ask the question: how many of our Christian ancestors are burning in hell for their occultic nonsense?  Emails in the second half! Also sorry for the botched break music. *She* 11 I went down to the nut orchard to look at the blossoms of the valley, to see whether the vines had budded, whether the pomegranates were in bloom. 12 Before I was aware, my desire set me among the chariots of my kinsman, a prince. *Others* 13 Return, return, O Shulammite, return, return, that we may look upon you. *He* Why should you look upon the Shulammite, as upon a dance before two armies? -Song of Solomon 6:11-13 The bride goes down to check the orchard that her husband cultivated, but suddenly she has a flight of fancy. She goes to one of her kinsmen - a distant relative - to get a ride. It appears she wants to surprise her husband at work. Her kinsman is a prince, most likely in the sense of being a tribal elder rather than the royal house itself, but he has the connections to do this favor for her. The chorus, representing her town, sends a delegation asking her to return. There's something about her that makes them feel ill at ease when she is absent. So it is when a Godly marriage is present: it is not just the foundation for a family, but also for a community. Show me a place where the marriages are strong, and I will show you a place where people live in greater harmony and social trust. They begin calling her Shulammite, to the befuddlement of the husband. That is not her proper name per se, but it is extremely important for how we read this text. "Shulammite" and "Solomon" both share the same root in Hebrew, making them the female and male versions of the same name. The title being given to this woman tells us that she is being compared to the king, namely in her wisdom and splendor. Also, as a literary figure Solomon speaks *through* her. When the Shulammite says not to awaken love before it pleases, that is Solomon saying it to all the women of Israel. Both of their names are derived from the word *Shalom.* Shalom means peace and wholeness, living the good life. To have Shalom is to live closer to the way things were in Eden where there was no conflict nor toil. Under Solomon's reign, Israel had prosperity and peace, living up to the monarch's name in real time. They were closest to the Edenic ideal during those times. In the Song, the Shulammite is presented as a garden, a woman who dwells in verdant orchards frequently. The message is clear: she offers to the young men and women of Israel what Solomon gave to all Israel with the help of our Lord. To bless future generations, especially the future kings, Solomon wrote Proverbs that men may have wisdom to lead lives of Shalom. To bless young couples (especially young women), he wrote the Song so that the common people would have Shalom on the household and community level. The Shulammite, who speaks the most and dwells amid Eden-like orchards, becomes Solomon's bearer of the message. And the message is this. "Do you want Eden? I cannot give you Eden. But I can give you Shalom - peace and wholeness in your times. Marriage is the place you can experience it the most strongly. And if you wait for marriage to engage in the marital act, if you remain one man and one woman, if you love each other with every fiber of your being, if you give yourself to each other fully, then you will have this peace and wholeness. You will have Shalom because that is what God gives to people who honor Him by their obedience."

The Saturday morning devotional is slightly delayed due to my lovely wife making waffles for breakfast. For the record though if the Song of Solomon were written today, I am sure the husband in the poem would say something like "your skin is bronzed but soft, famous as the waffles of the VLP guy's wife's waffles."
