The script played out — and we watched it from safety. Yesterday's plan literally named the path a hot inflation number would take: through 4,605, through 4,594, deeper. It came hot, gold fell $90 — and our rule had everything closed hours earlier. Tonight, the Fed's biggest speech of the summer decides what's next.
Reading it:
What happened: US inflation (PCE) came in hot, and gold's reaction followed our plan's 'hot' branch line by line — a sharp rejection from 4,674 and a $90 plunge to 4,583. Then something equally important happened: buyers absorbed the entire dump within hours. Why it matters: the market is now perfectly split. Hot inflation and high bond yields say gold should fall; a weak dollar and enormous ongoing buying say it shouldn't. When giants disagree, price coils — and gold is now boxed between 4,583 and 4,674, waiting for tonight's Jackson Hole speech (16:15 UTC), where the Fed sets its tone for autumn. The catch: coiled market + the Fed's flagship speech + month-end tomorrow = potentially violent resolution. This is a day for small, quick trades at the edges of the box — or none at all. The plan: morning only. Buy a dip into 4,596 – 4,601 that clearly bounces (targets 4,626, then 4,644) — or if price rallies first, sell a clear stall at 4,655 – 4,671 (targets back down the same path). Nothing in the middle, and everything closes before 16:15 UTC. A tough-talking Fed likely breaks 4,583 toward 4,550; a friendly one reopens the road to 4,697.

How we're trading it: this month has been the full curriculum — six winning plans, one honest miss, and four market bombs watched from the sidelines because the curfew rule is absolute. Tonight is bomb number five in waiting. So: small size at the drawn edges only, first profit banked immediately, nothing held into the speech, and zero opinions about what the Fed 'should' say. We'll read the speech flat and calm, and tomorrow's plan will start from whatever world it leaves behind. Surviving the big nights IS the strategy.
