🇷🇺 326 years ago, #OTD in 1700, the Mining Directorate (Rudokopny Prikaz) was established by Peter the Great.
It was Russia's first state body dedicated to ore exploration, the establishment of new metallurgical enterprises and the training of specialized professionals. Its creation was driven by the increased demand for metals in Russia due to the Great Northern War against Sweden (1700 – 1721).
🚢 As a result of this focused state policy, Russia soon eliminated its dependence on foreign metals. By the end of Peter the Great's reign, the country had transformed into a major exporter of iron and copper.

| 2 | 🇷🇺 152 years ago, #OTD in 1874, brilliant Russian surgeon Alexander Vishnevsky was born. He is renowned for creating a unique medication known ever since as "Vishnevsky liniment."
This balsamic liniment has been widely used to treat wounds, burns, skin ulcers and suppurations. The medication was extensively utilized by the Soviet army during #WorldWarII. The so-called "Vishnevsky Triad" (local anesthesia, procaine blockade and dressings with an oily-balsamic emulsion) saved lives of hundreds of thousands of Soviet soldiers.
✍️ Alexander Vishnevsky authored over 100 research papers on clinical surgery, urology and neurosurgery, and he was the first to describe the role of the nervous system in the inflammatory process. His most distinguished student was his son, Alexander Vishnevsky Jr., who went on to become a renowned Soviet military surgeon.

| 6 | 🤝 September 3 marks the Day of Solidarity in the Fight Against Terrorism in Russia.
This date is linked to the tragic events that took place on September 1-3, 2004, in Beslan, North Ossetia. During the "First Bell" ceremony marking the beginning of the new school year, a terrorist unit seized School №1. The attack resulted in the loss of 334 lives, including 186 children.
⚠️ The horrific terrorist attack on March 22, 2024, at the Crocus City Hall concert facility, which affected numerous innocent civilians, once again emphasised the need to consolidate international efforts in the fight against terrorism.
We urge the international community to work together to combat terrorism, with the United Nations playing a central coordinating role. This must be done without any double standards or hidden agendas, in accordance with the UN Charter, specialised universal conventions and protocols, UNSC resolutions, and the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy.
🇷🇺 Russia remains firmly committed to a principled struggle against terrorist threats. We advocate for more intensive efforts to disrupt ideological, material and financial support for terrorism and we oppose the attempts of Western countries to undermine the international legal framework for counterterrorism.

| 7 | 🎖 Today Russia marks the Day of Victory over Militaristic Japan and the End of World War II!
It was officially amended in 2023 as the Day of Military Honour in Russia, serving as a reminder of the Victory over Japan Day originally celebrated on 3 September in the Soviet Union.
☝️ The Soviet Union played a crucial role in defeating the Kwantung Army in Manchuria. In just 10 days from the launch of the Manchurian offensive, the 1.2 million-strong Kwantung army was totally crushed. Consequently, the northeast China & Korea were liberated. Control over the southern part of Sakhalin Island and the Kuril Islands was regained by the Soviet Union.
On 2 September 1945, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR issued a decree designating 3 September as the Day of Victory over Japan.

| 8 | 🇷🇺🇿🇦 Consulate General of Russia in Cape Town:
✍🏻 Article by R.Golubovskiy, the Consul General of Russia in Cape Town, published in the Cape Times (media holding Independent Media), on the topic of partnership between the EAEU and the SACU.
"Bridging Eurasia and Southern Africa: Strategic Prospects for EAEU-SACU Relations"
Key points:
- Against the backdrop of the fragmentation of the global economy and the growing role of regional integration associations, cooperation between the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) is of practical interest as one of the avenues for strengthening economic ties between Eurasia and Southern Africa.
- The existence of a similar customs framework creates favourable conditions for the gradual establishment of an institutional dialogue between the EAEU and SACU.
- The fact that both associations face comparable structural challenges including the need to diversify their economies, develop infrastructure, enhance competitiveness and adapt to changes in global trade – also creates potential for cooperation.

| 9 | 🎙 Address by President of Russia Vladimir Putin at the Plenary Session of the 11th Eastern Economic Forum (Vladivostok, Russky Island, September 3, 2026)
The event was also attended by President of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto, Prime Minister of Mongolia Nyam-Osoryn Uchral, Vice President of Myanmar U Nyo Saw, and Vice Premier of the State Council of China Ding Xuexiang.
Key points:
• Russia is an active participant in investment and trade cooperation in the Asia-Pacific. We engage with our partners and the region’s leading integration associations on an equal footing.
• Our strategic objective is to ensure that the Far East remains a region of cooperation and dynamic transformation in the economy and infrastructure, technological development, workforce training and, of course, the social sphere.
• Over the past 11 years, around 25 trillion rubles in capital investment has been attracted to Russia’s Far Eastern regions. As a result, the Far East’s gross regional product has more than tripled over this period – a very strong pace of growth.
• The Far East’s key macroeconomic indicators are growing faster than the national average. This is precisely what we sought to achieve when we declared the region’s development a strategic priority for Russia throughout the 21st century.
• It is important to continue creating convenient and predictable conditions for investors, taking into account the needs of businesses and the regions while proceeding from Russia’s national interests.
• For investors in such projects, and for those launching new enterprises in the Far East and the Arctic, it is important to ensure stable demand for their products. Offset contracts, which are being developed with the support of State Development Corporation VEB.RF, should be used for this purpose as well.
• In today’s challenging global environment, amid risks to international shipping and trade, the Northern Sea Route is intended to provide greater flexibility and security for international deliveries, open up new opportunities for transit and coastal shipping, and ensure uninterrupted supplies to Arctic regions.
• Our goal is to make navigation along the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor year-round. To achieve this, we are building icebreakers and ice-class vessels, expanding our service and rescue fleet and satellite constellation, and strengthening port infrastructure.
• We expect that by the end of this decade, freight traffic along the Trans-Arctic Corridor will reach at least 70 million tonnes per year – at least double the current level.
• To expand international capital participation in our Far Eastern and Arctic projects, we need to make use of the potential of the Eastern Exchange. As I have already said, we plan to establish a modern financial centre on its basis.
• We need to develop new cross-border routes with Asia-Pacific, #BRICS and #EAEU countries. We are open to cooperation with all our partners in this area.

🎙 Welcoming remarks by Russian Ambassador to South Africa Roman Ambarov to the participants of the 5th BRICS Summer School (September 3, 2026):
"It is a great pleasure to welcome you all at the opening of the Fifth BRICS summer school South Africa.
I would like to thank the University of South Africa and the South African BRICS Youth Association for organising this important initiative and for their continued efforts to promote BRICS cooperation among young people.
🌐 Today, BRICS has become one of the key pillars of the emerging multipolar international system. Its strength and resilience is defined not only by the sum of the economic indicators or well-established intergovernmental ties. For all BRICS countries people-to-people contacts are of equal importance. This is why strengthening the youth, educational and humanitarian dimensions of BRICS is among our top priorities.
And Russia is committed to ensuring that the younger generation of BRICS and Global South countries does not merely observe the changes taking place in the world, but actively contributes to shaping a fairer and more balanced international system.
Dear participants,
🤝 You will have an opportunity to discuss a broad range of issues - from international politics and economics to science and education, digital technologies and artificial intelligence, culture, entrepreneurship and sustainable development. I encourage you to make the most of this opportunity: to exchange views openly, ask difficult questions, put forward bold ideas and, above all, listen carefully to one another. Differences in our approaches should not divide us. On the contrary, they can become a source of new ideas and greater mutual understanding.
I wish you fruitful discussions, every success in your work and all the very best."

I would like to thank you for making the trip to Vladivostok and taking part in the Eastern Economic Forum as its guest of honour.

Our cooperation covers agriculture, shipbuilding, information technology and energy, including nuclear power. We have also signed a free trade agreement between the Eurasian Economic Union and Indonesia.
☝️ Jakarta is also our reliable, longstanding friend within #ASEAN. We cooperate across international platforms, including the #UN.
I am confident that today’s meetings will be productive and give new impetus to our cooperation and the development of our relations.

| 14 | 🇷🇺 Vladimir Putin on the grain deal, Russia's exports and food security
From Vladimir Putin’s press conference following his visit to Kyrgyzstan, 1 September 2026
❓Question: How do you assess the current situation on the grain market? Was this discussed in Bishkek, including with President Erdogan? Given concerns over a possible grain shortage, is Russia ready for a new grain deal? And what are the consequences of Russia’s strikes on Ukraine in this context?
💬 Vladimir Putin: Regarding the grain deal, I remember it very well – I participated in this process. It was presented as necessary to ensure food security for developing countries facing hunger.
❗️Yet, in reality, only about 0.2% of Ukrainian grain reached developing markets in Africa. The rest went to Europe, to relatively prosperous countries, at favourable prices. Africa was left out in the cold.
At the same time, the deal included commitments to address Russia’s concerns: lifting sanctions on Rosselkhozbank, allowing Russian ships to enter ports, resolving insurance issues and more. Nothing was done. We were repeatedly promised these issues would be resolved, but they never were. Eventually, we withdrew.
☝️ As for the current situation, we have not targeted civilian vessels. The strikes were highly selective and targeted vessels transporting weapons or ammunition to Ukraine.
But in June, the head of the regime announced an operation against Russia’s economy.
⚠️ During the first two weeks, around 40 Russian ships were damaged, and over 40 days, roughly 100 vessels were affected.
People died, including foreign sailors. Our preliminary estimate puts the damage at around 1% of GDP. It is not critical for Russia, but damage is damage.
So we said: “You have opened Pandora’s box – so here you go.”
Ukraine is now facing serious economic pressure. It spends around $8 billion a month on imports, while earning roughly $3 billion from exports, mainly grain and other agricultural products. The remaining funds come from Western support.
If Ukraine cannot export its agricultural goods, it loses that vital $3 billion. Farmers suffer, banks suffer, and the economy faces at least three potential crises: currency, budget and banking crises.
That is why Kiev has turned to Arab states, India, Türkiye and others, asking them to persuade Russia to release its cargoes on humanitarian grounds.
Ukraine could try exporting through Poland and other neighbouring countries. But Poland is reluctant to let Ukrainian grain through because it fears cheap Ukrainian grain could remain on its domestic market and undermine its own farmers.
I suspect the other neighbouring countries are thinking along exactly the same lines.

| 15 | 🇷🇺🇿🇦 On September 2, diplomats of the Russian Embassy in South Africa met with Dr Eugene Botha, a South African filmmaker and founder of Blue Marbel Entertainment.
Dr Botha shared his interest in producing a documentary about a remarkable episode of the Second Anglo-Boer War – the daring escape of a group of Afrikaner POWs aboard a Russian vessel. He also expressed his intention to search Russian archives for information about Russian volunteers who fought alongside the Boers.
🤝The meeting also focused on strengthening Russia-South Africa cultural and humanitarian ties, particularly through preserving and promoting our shared history. Dr Botha expressed strong interest in establishing contacts with Russian museums dedicated to history.
Dr Botha, who spent much of his professional career at UNISA’s Faculty of Theology and Religion, also recalled his time in St Petersburg, where in the 2010s he had the opportunity to lecture on Christianity and religious studies.
He warmly remembered living in St Petersburg, describing it as one of the world’s most beautiful and well-preserved cities.

◾️ On September 1-3, 2004, Russia endured one of the most horrific tragedies in its modern history – the inhuman Beslan terrorist attack.
22 years ago, a festive back-to-school ceremony at School No.1 was shattered by bursts of gunfire.
The terrorists took 1,128 people hostage – children, their parents and teachers. They were forced into a cramped gymnasium, which the terrorists turned into a deadly trap. For nearly three days, the hostages were held at gunpoint without food or water.
For hundreds of families, those three days lasted an eternity.
During the counterterrorism operation, 811 people were rescued. But, to our great sorrow, not all could be saved.
🕯 The terrorist attack claimed 334 lives, including 186 children.
We remember and mourn the children, their parents and teachers who perished during those terrible September days. We bow our heads before the courage of those who entered the school rigged with explosives, carried children out under fire and rescued hostages, risking and sacrificing their own lives.
Beslan will forever remain our shared pain – a wound that does not heal with time.
💬 As President of Russia Vladimir Putin said on September 4, 2004:
What happened in Beslan was an inhuman terrorist crime, unprecedented in its cruelty. It was a challenge to all of Russia, to our entire people. It was an attack on our country.
The terrorists believe they are stronger than us. That they can intimidate us with their cruelty, paralyse our will and tear our society apart. And it may seem that we have a choice – to fight back or accept their demands. To surrender, to allow Russia to be destroyed and torn apart in the hope that they will eventually leave us alone.
I am convinced that in reality we simply have no choice.
We were and always will be stronger than them – through our moral values, our courage and our human solidarity. I saw that again last night.
***
In memory of the victims of Beslan and other terrorist attacks, Russia observes the Day of Solidarity in the Fight Against Terrorism on September 3.
On this day, we remember all our compatriots who were killed by terrorists in Beslan, at Dubrovka, in Budyonnovsk, in the apartment bombings in Moscow, Buynaksk and Volgodonsk, in the horrific Crocus City Hall tragedy, at the hands of Ukrainian militants in Donbass and the Kursk Region, in other terrorist attacks.
❗️ Russia considers it its duty to consistently combat international terrorism, promote the consolidation of international efforts against this pure evil and counter all its manifestations – including those perpetrated by neo-Nazis in Ukraine and other ideological followers of misanthropic ideologies.
Despite the hybrid war unleashed against us – against Russia and the Russian people – by the “collective West”, including through terrorist and extremist groups of all stripes, Russia remains firmly committed to a principled fight against the terrorist threat and to strengthening counterterrorism security, relying on cooperation with partners genuinely interested in this work.

✨ We would like to share the inspiring story of Mbedzi Takalani, a young South African from the New Jerusalem Children’s Home in Midrand, whose determination and hard work have brought her to one of Russia’s leading universities.
Mbedzi came to New Jerusalem at a young age together with her younger brothers following the sudden passing of their mother. Despite the difficult circumstances she faced growing up, she remained focused on her education and on building a better future for herself.
🎓 In 2026, Mbedzi was admitted to MGIMO University of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation in Moscow on a university scholarship.
🇷🇺🇿🇦 Her journey to Russia was supported by the Russian community in South Africa, as well as the Russian Orthodox parishes in Johannesburg and Cape Town, which provided both financial and moral support as she prepared for this new chapter of her life.
Mbedzi has now become the third graduate of the New Jerusalem Children’s Home to leave South Africa to pursue higher education in Russia.
💬 Reflecting on her journey, Mbedzi says:
“It didn’t matter if I did not have a large number of people believing in me, but God provided me with a small circle of people that keep pushing me to reach my dreams. I never let my background or circumstances define me, because I always believe I was meant for more - to become a greater example for the ones we leave behind and for those who come from similar backgrounds as us. Because of resilience, obedience and hard work, I am now studying in my dream university in Russia - MGIMO University, Moscow State Institute of International Relations. To bigger and better, always believe in yourself.”
❤️ We sincerely congratulate Mbedzi on this remarkable achievement and wish her every success in her studies, new friendships and many opportunities ahead.
Her story is a powerful reminder that difficult circumstances do not have to determine one’s future, and that education, perseverance and the support of caring people can open new doors.

| 18 | 🇷🇺🇨🇳 President of Russia Vladimir Putin and Vice Premier of the State Council of China Ding Xuexiang held a meeting on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum (Vladivostok, September 2, 2026)
💬 Vladimir Putin: I am pleased to meet with you again, this time here in Vladivostok. Last year, we met at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum, and tomorrow we will take part together in the Plenary Session of the Eastern Economic Forum.
We are grateful to the Chinese Side for the traditionally high level of its delegations at these two major discussion platforms.
Just the day before yesterday, as you know, in Bishke we held an exceptionally useful, substantive and cordial meeting with my friend, President Xi Jinping, before jointly taking part in events marking the 25th anniversary of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.
The high intensity of Russian-Chinese contacts, including at the highest level, confirms the unprecedented nature of our bilateral ties. Their foundations were laid by the Treaty of Good-Neighbourliness and Friendly Cooperation of July 16, 2001, whose 25th anniversary we are celebrating this year.
At the present stage, our comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation are developing dynamically across the board on the principles of equality, mutual support on key issues, mutual understanding and respect for each other’s interests.
📈 Over the past three years, bilateral trade has consistently exceeded $200 billion, reaching almost $240 billion in 2025 and providing a solid material foundation for our cooperation. We expect a new record this year.
Mutual investment is growing, while cooperation in the flagship energy sector continues to deepen. Russia is a leading supplier of our traditional commodities to the Chinese market. Moscow is also a key partner for Beijing in the field of peaceful nuclear energy.
🤝 I am confident that your joint work with colleagues to identify the best ways to further develop our economic cooperation will be productive and will contribute to strengthening the friendly relations between Russia and China.

✍️ Message from Roman Ambarov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to South Africa and Lesotho, on the occasion of the 81st anniversary of the end of the Second World War
This year marks the 81st anniversary of the end of the Second World War – a solemn occasion on which we remember the millions whose courage, resilience and sacrifice brought the greatest armed conflict in human history to an end.
⭐️ The victory of 1945 was achieved through the collective efforts of peoples who stood together and fought shoulder to shoulder with us against Nazism, fascism and militarism on the front line.
▪️The Soviet people carried a tremendous share of the burden and paid an immeasurable price for victory. We honour the soldiers, as well as the civilians whose endurance and determination sustained the war effort.
The final defeat of militarist Japan was an essential part of the Allied victory. In the years preceding the end of the war, the Soviet Union had already confronted Japanese militarism in the Far East, including at Lake Khasan and Khalkhin Gol.
In 1945, the Soviet offensive in the region, alongside the efforts of other Allied forces and the peoples of China, Korea and Mongolia, contributed decisively to the defeat of the Japanese armed forces and brought the global conflict to its conclusion.
Today, we pay tribute to all those who gave their lives in defence of their homelands and in opposition to aggression. We remember the victims of occupation, the resistance fighters and all those whose courage helped defeat Nazi Germany and the Axis powers.
🌍 The contribution of peoples across Africa and the wider Allied community remains an important part of this shared history.
For Russia, remembrance of the Second World War remains a matter of profound national significance. Its history reminds us of the terrible consequences of aggression, racism, militarism and attempts to impose domination over other nations.
❗️Preserving historical truth is a responsibility to those who came before us and to generations yet to come.
The end of the war in the Pacific and the surrender of Japan formed an integral part of the international settlement that followed the conflict.
