Repost from Russian MFA 🇷🇺
🇷🇺🇺🇸 Russia's President Vladimir Putin received in the Kremlin Special Envoy of the President of the United States of America Steve Witkoff and entrepreneur, founder of Affinity Partners Jared Kushner (Moscow, September 5, 2026)
💬 Vladimir Putin: Colleagues, I heartily welcome you to Moscow.
The situation we are to sort out today is, of course, a difficult one.
But before we begin, I would like to ask you to convey my best wishes and words of gratitude to the President of the United States, Donald Trump.
While he realizes that he is facing a difficult situation, he nevertheless does not stop his efforts to resolve it and to contribute to the settlement of the Russian‑Ukrainian conflict. Today, we will discuss all its components and all its aspects, and for our part, we are also ready to inform you about our view of the situation.
As you informed us, I know that you are planning to go to Kiev after visiting Moscow. In any case, of course, no matter what happens next, contacts of this kind are certainly always beneficial.
And here, of course, the quality of mediation and trust in those who are engaged in it are very important. I’d like to tell you that we find it comfortable to work with you, and, of course, we have a very high level of trust during this work.
🤝 We are glad to see you. Welcome.
***
We received the request through official channels — both through the intelligence services and through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — to stop the strikes on Kiev. I issued the respective order, and since midnight on September 5, these strikes on Kiev have not been carried out.
I would like to note that the Ukrainian side has also significantly reduced — by an order of magnitude — the strikes on the territory of the Russian Federation, including Moscow.
The Ukrainian authorities have published their call for a broader three‑day truce, but we have never agreed on this with them.
Yet we will do everything in our power to ensure the safety of the negotiation process and the mediators, represented by you and, perhaps, by those accompanying you.

| 2 | ✨🇷🇺 35 years ago, #OTD in 1991, Russia’s "Northern Capital" reclaimed its historic name, #SaintPetersburg.
The city was founded on 27 May 1703 by Peter the Great and named after Saint Peter.
👑🌊 The tsar considered this symbolic: a city bearing such a name would serve as Russia's gateway to the Baltic Sea and Europe. Spreading across 42 islands with more than 340 bridges, it quickly earned the nickname "Venice of the North". Due to its geology, the city also features one of the deepest subway systems in the world, with stations plunging up to 86 metres below ground.
In 1712, the country’s capital was relocated from Moscow to St. Petersburg, where it remained for over 200 years. The city became a global cultural epicentre and the backdrop for literary masterpieces like Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment.
Following the outbreak of World War I in 1914, the city's name was changed to Petrograd to remove German influences. In 1924, following Vladimir Lenin’s death, it was renamed Leningrad.
💎 Throughout these shifts, the city's crown jewel remained the State Hermitage Museum. Housed in the Winter Palace, it holds over 3 million treasures, famously guarded since the 18th century by an official "army" of museum cats.
In 1918, the Soviet leadership moved the capital back to Moscow. Later, in 1991, a historic referendum finally restored the name Saint Petersburg.
🌅 Today, its enduring spirit is best witnessed during the annual White Nights from late May to mid-July, when the sun never fully sets over the Neva River.

| 3 | 🤩 Foreign leaders who toured the USSR:
Part II
🇫🇷 Charles de Gaulle
In June 1966, French President Charles de Gaulle made a historic 11-day visit to the USSR, charming locals by giving a speech in Russian from a Moscow city balcony. During his trip, he toured university and theatre sites in Moscow, became the first foreign leader to visit the scientific hub of Akademgorodok and watched rocket launches at the Baikonur Cosmodrome. He also toured the Hermitage museum in Leningrad and visited a completely rebuilt Stalingrad, a city he had last seen in ruins during World War II.
🇫🇮 Urho Kekkonen
During his frequent visits to the Soviet Union, Finnish President Urho Kekkonen focused on informal diplomacy through hunting, traditional saunas and a close friendship with Soviet Prime Minister Alexei Kosygin. In the summer of 1969, the two leaders toured Lake Baikal and went on a gruelling 200-kilometer hike across the Caucasus Mountains. Despite being 69 and 65 years old, they successfully climbed the difficult Klukhor Pass and hiked down to the Black Sea coast.
🇩🇪 Willy Brandt
In 1971, West German Chancellor Willy Brandt visited the Soviet Union for a unique "beach-style" diplomatic meeting with Leonid Brezhnev in Crimea. Over two days, the two leaders held informal negotiations while swimming, taking boat trips and chatting. Since the chancellor arrived unprepared for such a casual meeting, Brezhnev famously accommodated his German guest by lending him a pair of swimming trunks from his own wardrobe.
🇨🇦 Pierre Elliott Trudeau
In 1971, Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau visited the closed Soviet city of Norilsk to study buildings constructed on frozen ground (permafrost). Even though the weather dropped to a freezing -15°C after they had visited warmer southern cities, almost the entire local population came out to greet them. Trudeau toured buildings built on stilts and watched youth ice hockey at the Ice Palace. He later returned to the Soviet Union in 1984 as a retiree, travelling the Silk Road through Armenia and Georgia.
🇺🇸 Richard Nixon
In 1959, US Vice President Richard Nixon spent three days in Sverdlovsk touring major factories, going down into a copper mine and giving a toast to world peace in Russian. He returned to the USSR in 1974 as president to hold an informal summit with Leonid Brezhnev in Crimea. During this second trip, the leaders held meetings on a motorboat and in a coastal cave, while Nixon's wife, Patricia Nixon, explored famous local landmarks like the Swallow's Nest castle.

| 5 | 🤩 Dear friends,
Did you know that between 1927 and 1974, several foreign leaders took surprisingly casual trips to the Soviet Union. Along with touring secret military bases, they went on mountain hikes, visited bathhouses and even held beach meetings in borrowed swimsuits. By slipping away from their security guards, these leaders got a rare look at everyday Soviet life.
🌐 Today, we’ll share the stories of 10 foreign heads of state who toured the USSR:
Part I
🇦🇫 Amanullah Khan, Afghanistan
In 1927, King Amanullah of Afghanistan became the first foreign leader to visit the Soviet Union. In Moscow, he dined with Joseph Stalin and toured cultural and industrial sites. He then went to Leningrad, but he did not like his royal accommodations at the Winter Palace. For a more relaxing pace, he went to Crimea, where he drove himself around and talked to local people like a regular tourist. Finally, he ended his trip in Georgia by visiting beaches and tea plantations.
🇮🇳 Jawaharlal Nehru
In June 1955, Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and his daughter, Indira Gandhi, took a 16-day tour of the USSR. They travelled to many major Soviet cities to study local industries and farming. Key moments of their trip included touring a steel mill in Rustavi and reviewing farm development in Altai, where local workers gave Nehru a symbolic bag of harvested grain.
🇪🇬 Gamal Abdel Nasser
Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser visited the USSR seven times, starting in 1958 as the first Arab leader to do so. On his broad tour of the Soviet republics, he explored Moscow's nuclear centre and giant movie theatre, alongside stops in cities like Kiev, Leningrad and Stalingrad. While his early trips focused on politics, his later visits were for his health, as he frequently returned for medical treatments at a Barvikha sanatorium and the radon springs in Georgia.
🇻🇬 Harold Macmillan
In winter 1959, British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan made a historic 10-day visit to Moscow, where he amused reporters by wearing a traditional white fur hat. During the trip, he stayed at a dacha with Nikita Khrushchev, rode a Russian horse carriage, and travelled to Leningrad to tour a shipyard and observe local elections. Although he privately complained in his diaries about being forced to watch the ballet nearly every night instead of visiting a Russian circus, the trip was an important cultural exchange.
🇨🇺 Fidel Castro
In 1963, Cuban leader Fidel Castro took a historic 40-day tour of the USSR. He began in Murmansk, where he skied and tried fish dumplings and went on to receive unique honours, like speaking from the Lenin’s Tomb and visiting a secret missile base in Severodvinsk. Castro balanced formal activities like hunting and watching the ballet with meeting ordinary people, which included passing out cigars to factory workers in Bratsk and taking an unescorted walk through Moscow.

| 6 | ⚡️ In connection with Ukrainian statements aimed at creating direct threats to civil aviation, the competent Russian authorities are in contact with the leadership of the International Civil Aviation Organization (#ICAO) in Montreal.
An urgent appeal on the matter has been sent to ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar.
❗️ The Russian Federation has issued a strong protest over Ukraine’s reckless terrorist actions, which run counter to international law.
The NOTAMs issued by the Ukrainian authorities alleging that Russian airspace is unsafe have been categorically rejected. They have no legal force, distort the actual situation and mislead users of Russian airspace.
We called on the ICAO Secretary General to condemn the Kiev regime’s unlawful interference in civil aviation and the direct threats it is creating, and to take targeted steps to put an end to these actions by Ukraine.
☝️ The Russian Federation remains firmly committed to ensuring the safety of civil aviation. | 54 |
| 7 | 🇷🇺 326 years ago, #OTD in 1700, the Mining Directorate (Rudokopny Prikaz) was established by Peter the Great.
It was Russia's first state body dedicated to ore exploration, the establishment of new metallurgical enterprises and the training of specialized professionals. Its creation was driven by the increased demand for metals in Russia due to the Great Northern War against Sweden (1700 – 1721).
🚢 As a result of this focused state policy, Russia soon eliminated its dependence on foreign metals. By the end of Peter the Great's reign, the country had transformed into a major exporter of iron and copper.

| 8 | 🇷🇺 152 years ago, #OTD in 1874, brilliant Russian surgeon Alexander Vishnevsky was born. He is renowned for creating a unique medication known ever since as "Vishnevsky liniment."
This balsamic liniment has been widely used to treat wounds, burns, skin ulcers and suppurations. The medication was extensively utilized by the Soviet army during #WorldWarII. The so-called "Vishnevsky Triad" (local anesthesia, procaine blockade and dressings with an oily-balsamic emulsion) saved lives of hundreds of thousands of Soviet soldiers.
✍️ Alexander Vishnevsky authored over 100 research papers on clinical surgery, urology and neurosurgery, and he was the first to describe the role of the nervous system in the inflammatory process. His most distinguished student was his son, Alexander Vishnevsky Jr., who went on to become a renowned Soviet military surgeon.

| 12 | 🤝 September 3 marks the Day of Solidarity in the Fight Against Terrorism in Russia.
This date is linked to the tragic events that took place on September 1-3, 2004, in Beslan, North Ossetia. During the "First Bell" ceremony marking the beginning of the new school year, a terrorist unit seized School №1. The attack resulted in the loss of 334 lives, including 186 children.
⚠️ The horrific terrorist attack on March 22, 2024, at the Crocus City Hall concert facility, which affected numerous innocent civilians, once again emphasised the need to consolidate international efforts in the fight against terrorism.
We urge the international community to work together to combat terrorism, with the United Nations playing a central coordinating role. This must be done without any double standards or hidden agendas, in accordance with the UN Charter, specialised universal conventions and protocols, UNSC resolutions, and the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy.
🇷🇺 Russia remains firmly committed to a principled struggle against terrorist threats. We advocate for more intensive efforts to disrupt ideological, material and financial support for terrorism and we oppose the attempts of Western countries to undermine the international legal framework for counterterrorism.

| 13 | 🎖 Today Russia marks the Day of Victory over Militaristic Japan and the End of World War II!
It was officially amended in 2023 as the Day of Military Honour in Russia, serving as a reminder of the Victory over Japan Day originally celebrated on 3 September in the Soviet Union.
☝️ The Soviet Union played a crucial role in defeating the Kwantung Army in Manchuria. In just 10 days from the launch of the Manchurian offensive, the 1.2 million-strong Kwantung army was totally crushed. Consequently, the northeast China & Korea were liberated. Control over the southern part of Sakhalin Island and the Kuril Islands was regained by the Soviet Union.
On 2 September 1945, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR issued a decree designating 3 September as the Day of Victory over Japan.

| 14 | 🇷🇺🇿🇦 Consulate General of Russia in Cape Town:
✍🏻 Article by R.Golubovskiy, the Consul General of Russia in Cape Town, published in the Cape Times (media holding Independent Media), on the topic of partnership between the EAEU and the SACU.
"Bridging Eurasia and Southern Africa: Strategic Prospects for EAEU-SACU Relations"
Key points:
- Against the backdrop of the fragmentation of the global economy and the growing role of regional integration associations, cooperation between the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) is of practical interest as one of the avenues for strengthening economic ties between Eurasia and Southern Africa.
- The existence of a similar customs framework creates favourable conditions for the gradual establishment of an institutional dialogue between the EAEU and SACU.
- The fact that both associations face comparable structural challenges including the need to diversify their economies, develop infrastructure, enhance competitiveness and adapt to changes in global trade – also creates potential for cooperation.

| 15 | 🎙 Address by President of Russia Vladimir Putin at the Plenary Session of the 11th Eastern Economic Forum (Vladivostok, Russky Island, September 3, 2026)
The event was also attended by President of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto, Prime Minister of Mongolia Nyam-Osoryn Uchral, Vice President of Myanmar U Nyo Saw, and Vice Premier of the State Council of China Ding Xuexiang.
Key points:
• Russia is an active participant in investment and trade cooperation in the Asia-Pacific. We engage with our partners and the region’s leading integration associations on an equal footing.
• Our strategic objective is to ensure that the Far East remains a region of cooperation and dynamic transformation in the economy and infrastructure, technological development, workforce training and, of course, the social sphere.
• Over the past 11 years, around 25 trillion rubles in capital investment has been attracted to Russia’s Far Eastern regions. As a result, the Far East’s gross regional product has more than tripled over this period – a very strong pace of growth.
• The Far East’s key macroeconomic indicators are growing faster than the national average. This is precisely what we sought to achieve when we declared the region’s development a strategic priority for Russia throughout the 21st century.
• It is important to continue creating convenient and predictable conditions for investors, taking into account the needs of businesses and the regions while proceeding from Russia’s national interests.
• For investors in such projects, and for those launching new enterprises in the Far East and the Arctic, it is important to ensure stable demand for their products. Offset contracts, which are being developed with the support of State Development Corporation VEB.RF, should be used for this purpose as well.
• In today’s challenging global environment, amid risks to international shipping and trade, the Northern Sea Route is intended to provide greater flexibility and security for international deliveries, open up new opportunities for transit and coastal shipping, and ensure uninterrupted supplies to Arctic regions.
• Our goal is to make navigation along the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor year-round. To achieve this, we are building icebreakers and ice-class vessels, expanding our service and rescue fleet and satellite constellation, and strengthening port infrastructure.
• We expect that by the end of this decade, freight traffic along the Trans-Arctic Corridor will reach at least 70 million tonnes per year – at least double the current level.
• To expand international capital participation in our Far Eastern and Arctic projects, we need to make use of the potential of the Eastern Exchange. As I have already said, we plan to establish a modern financial centre on its basis.
• We need to develop new cross-border routes with Asia-Pacific, #BRICS and #EAEU countries. We are open to cooperation with all our partners in this area.

🎙 Welcoming remarks by Russian Ambassador to South Africa Roman Ambarov to the participants of the 5th BRICS Summer School (September 3, 2026):
"It is a great pleasure to welcome you all at the opening of the Fifth BRICS summer school South Africa.
I would like to thank the University of South Africa and the South African BRICS Youth Association for organising this important initiative and for their continued efforts to promote BRICS cooperation among young people.
🌐 Today, BRICS has become one of the key pillars of the emerging multipolar international system. Its strength and resilience is defined not only by the sum of the economic indicators or well-established intergovernmental ties. For all BRICS countries people-to-people contacts are of equal importance. This is why strengthening the youth, educational and humanitarian dimensions of BRICS is among our top priorities.
And Russia is committed to ensuring that the younger generation of BRICS and Global South countries does not merely observe the changes taking place in the world, but actively contributes to shaping a fairer and more balanced international system.
Dear participants,
🤝 You will have an opportunity to discuss a broad range of issues - from international politics and economics to science and education, digital technologies and artificial intelligence, culture, entrepreneurship and sustainable development. I encourage you to make the most of this opportunity: to exchange views openly, ask difficult questions, put forward bold ideas and, above all, listen carefully to one another. Differences in our approaches should not divide us. On the contrary, they can become a source of new ideas and greater mutual understanding.
I wish you fruitful discussions, every success in your work and all the very best."

💬 Vladimir Putin: Allow me to extend a warm welcome to you – this time here in Vladivostok.
This is our second meeting this year, and I am very pleased about that. Our personal relations reflect the genuinely strategic nature of ties between our countries.
I would like to thank you for making the trip to Vladivostok and taking part in the Eastern Economic Forum as its guest of honour.
🤝 Indonesia is one of Russia’s key partners in Southeast Asia. Our countries have enjoyed longstanding ties of friendship for many years. Trade continues to grow, increasing by more than 12% in 2025. Our Joint Commission is working actively.
Our cooperation covers agriculture, shipbuilding, information technology and energy, including nuclear power. We have also signed a free trade agreement between the Eurasian Economic Union and Indonesia.
☝️ Jakarta is also our reliable, longstanding friend within #ASEAN. We cooperate across international platforms, including the #UN.
I am confident that today’s meetings will be productive and give new impetus to our cooperation and the development of our relations.

| 20 | 🇷🇺 Vladimir Putin on the grain deal, Russia's exports and food security
From Vladimir Putin’s press conference following his visit to Kyrgyzstan, 1 September 2026
❓Question: How do you assess the current situation on the grain market? Was this discussed in Bishkek, including with President Erdogan? Given concerns over a possible grain shortage, is Russia ready for a new grain deal? And what are the consequences of Russia’s strikes on Ukraine in this context?
💬 Vladimir Putin: Regarding the grain deal, I remember it very well – I participated in this process. It was presented as necessary to ensure food security for developing countries facing hunger.
❗️Yet, in reality, only about 0.2% of Ukrainian grain reached developing markets in Africa. The rest went to Europe, to relatively prosperous countries, at favourable prices. Africa was left out in the cold.
At the same time, the deal included commitments to address Russia’s concerns: lifting sanctions on Rosselkhozbank, allowing Russian ships to enter ports, resolving insurance issues and more. Nothing was done. We were repeatedly promised these issues would be resolved, but they never were. Eventually, we withdrew.
☝️ As for the current situation, we have not targeted civilian vessels. The strikes were highly selective and targeted vessels transporting weapons or ammunition to Ukraine.
But in June, the head of the regime announced an operation against Russia’s economy.
⚠️ During the first two weeks, around 40 Russian ships were damaged, and over 40 days, roughly 100 vessels were affected.
People died, including foreign sailors. Our preliminary estimate puts the damage at around 1% of GDP. It is not critical for Russia, but damage is damage.
So we said: “You have opened Pandora’s box – so here you go.”
Ukraine is now facing serious economic pressure. It spends around $8 billion a month on imports, while earning roughly $3 billion from exports, mainly grain and other agricultural products. The remaining funds come from Western support.
If Ukraine cannot export its agricultural goods, it loses that vital $3 billion. Farmers suffer, banks suffer, and the economy faces at least three potential crises: currency, budget and banking crises.
That is why Kiev has turned to Arab states, India, Türkiye and others, asking them to persuade Russia to release its cargoes on humanitarian grounds.
Ukraine could try exporting through Poland and other neighbouring countries. But Poland is reluctant to let Ukrainian grain through because it fears cheap Ukrainian grain could remain on its domestic market and undermine its own farmers.
I suspect the other neighbouring countries are thinking along exactly the same lines.
