Lawrence was sentenced to death yesterday.

President William Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto met Kenyan basketball player Madina Okot on Wednesday night in Brooklyn, New York, during a WNBA game between the Atlanta Dream and New York Liberty.
The First Couple sat courtside at Barclays Center to support Okot, who is in her rookie season with the Atlanta Dream. The Dream won the match 83-65, securing a playoff spot.
Okot, the first Kenyan woman drafted into the WNBA (selected 13th overall by Atlanta in 2026), came off the bench and recorded two points and two rebounds in limited minutes. After the game, she met the President and First Lady on the court, where they took a selfie and spoke in Swahili.

A man identified as Anthony Ochieng has reportedly been arrested by officers said to be from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and Kasarani Police Station in the Githurai area.
Photos and videos circulating online appear to show Ochieng being handcuffed and led away during the reported arrest. Hours later, reports emerged that he had been found dead.
The death has reportedly been attributed to a road accident, raising questions over what happened between his arrest and the reported death.
As of this evening, there is no public statement confirming the circumstances of the arrest, the alleged accident or the exact timeline of events. No postmortem findings have also been released.

37 Miners Die in Custody at NSCDC Detention Facility in Nigeria
Thirty-seven suspected illegal miners have died while in the custody of Nigeria’s Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna, Niger State.
The victims were among 67 people arrested during anti-illegal mining operations on September 15 and 16. They were found dead in a detention cell the following morning, with overcrowding, poor ventilation and possible exposure to harmful substances among the issues being investigated.
The state NSCDC commandant and 23 other officers were suspended and taken into custody as police launched investigations. A new commandant has since been appointed.
Protests erupted in Minna following the deaths, leading to a temporary curfew. Autopsies and forensic examinations are ongoing, with no final cause of death yet established.

A Dreamline bus (KDY 404L) collided with a stationary trailer (KBS 609R) along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway between Taru and Mackinnon Road in Kwale County this morning, 23 September 2026.
The bus, which was heading towards Mombasa, rammed into the rear of the broken-down trailer, which had reportedly stalled on the road without clear warning signs or hazard markings. Preliminary reports indicate that the bus was speeding and closely following another vehicle that managed to swerve at the last moment.
The impact heavily damaged the front of the bus, including the VIP section. Police confirmed that two people died, among them a female passenger seated in the VIP area and another passenger who was initially trapped and injured inside the wreckage but later succumbed.

| 16 |  The High Court has awarded tech entrepreneur and blogger Ndiang’ui Kinyagia Sh5 million after ruling that a June 2025 police raid on his Kinoo home violated his rights.
Justice Patricia Nyaundi found that DCI officers unlawfully entered and searched his house on 21 June 2025, seizing items without proper authority. The court held that the operation breached his rights to privacy, property, dignity, security and freedom of movement.
The raid was linked to investigations into his social media posts about planned anti-government protests. Kinyagia went into hiding for about two weeks out of fear for his safety.

| 17 |  The Kenya Revenue Authority has uncovered a major smartphone customs fraud scheme at Eldoret International Airport.
Investigators found 55,607 ordinary smartphones in a consignment that had been declared as only 3,000 units, an under-declaration of 52,607 phones. In addition, 309 high-end smartphones that had not been declared at all were recovered. Among the premium models were the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max.
KRA estimates that the under-declaration and non-declaration could have denied the government about Sh50.4 million in revenue. The goods formed part of consolidated cargo that also included shoes, clothing, automotive spare parts, household items and other electronic accessories, and had been declared under five separate Customs entries.

| 18 |  A fire broke out at around 5am on Tuesday at Hill School in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, gutting a dormitory that housed about 340 Form Three and Form Four students.
No injuries were reported. All the students were already in morning preps when the blaze started, allowing them to leave the building safely. The fire destroyed the roof of the dormitory and property worth millions of shillings, with most students losing their personal and school belongings.
Emergency responders from the Kenya Red Cross, Uasin Gishu County fire brigade, police and local community members contained the fire. Psychosocial support is being offered to the affected learners, and a rapid needs assessment is underway to determine the full extent of the damage.
