Palestinian citizens of Israel were among those who gave B’Tselem testimonies about torture in Israeli detention facilities since October 2023. Although their legal status differs from that of Palestinians in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, and they are subject to a different legal system, they were held in the same conditions and exposed to similar abuse. Sleep deprivation, systematic starvation and the denial of medical care are employed throughout facilities where Palestinians are held. Some detainees also testified to severe sexual assaults. At least 90 Palestinians have died in these torture facilities since October 2023 as a result of the inhumane conditions. The torture and inhumane treatment are carried out with the full backing of Israel’s political leadership, which openly boasts about violating prisoners’ rights and imposing harsh prison conditions.
