⚡️ How to "freeze" the motion of electrons?
Skoltech and Chinese Academy of Sciences researchers calculated how to fine-tune plasma target parameters so laser flashes retain their attosecond duration (10⁻¹⁸ seconds) without "blurring" as they pass through plasma.
Simulations carried out on Skoltech's Zhores supercomputer resulted in a practical map of target parameters for designing more precise radiation sources.
"An attosecond pulse can be compared to a very short flash needed to obtain a sharp image of an ultrafast process... We have obtained a practical criterion that makes it possible to determine the permissible target parameters in advance and avoid a large number of computationally intensive trial-and-error simulations,"
— Elizaveta Lipkova, Junior Research Engineer at the Artificial Intelligence and Supercomputing Laboratory of the Skoltech AI Center. The study was published in Applied Physics Letters .

| 3 | 🧬 How long could a person live if we defeated all causes of aging except DNA damage?
Researchers from Skoltech and AIRI have for the first time quantitatively assessed how somatic mutations — random DNA changes that accumulate in cells with age — limit the maximum human lifespan.
The results show that even if all other aging processes were eliminated, accumulation of mutations would still cap our median lifespan at 146–194 years.
“The key finding of the study is the discovery of substantial differences between tissue types. Neurons and cardiomyocytes, which lack the ability to divide, turned out to be the main limiting factor: when all other causes of aging are eliminated, somatic mutations alone reduce the theoretical median lifespan from 1,759 years (for a hypothetical non‑aging human organism) to 156 years. At the same time, tissues with high regenerative capacity — such as the liver — can maintain their function for thousands of years through continuous cell renewal, effectively neutralizing the negative impact of mutations,” shared the results Evgeny Efimov, one of the key authors of the study, a research intern at the Skoltech Biomed Technologies Center and a researcher at AIRI.
“Our study shows that somatic mutations contribute significantly to aging, but they cannot by themselves explain the observed mortality,” noted co‑author Dmitrii Kriukov, a research scientist at the Skoltech Biomed Technologies Center and a senior research scientist at AIRI. “This means that other aging mechanisms — such as loss of proteostasis, mitochondrial dysfunction, or epigenetic changes — contribute comparably to limiting lifespan."
“We can now not just say that mutations are harmful, but quantify exactly how much they shorten life and compare their contribution with other aging processes,” added the study’s principal investigator Ekaterina Khrameeva, an associate professor at the Skoltech Biomed Technologies Center. “This work is important for understanding which aging mechanisms deserve the most attention and resources."
The study was published in the journal npj Aging (Nature Portfolio) and supported by a grant from the Russian Science Foundation. | 389 |

| 11 | ⚡️ Today at 14:00 Moscow time, the III UNESCO-Russia Mendeleev International Prize award ceremony will take place at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. This is one of the world's most prestigious awards in fundamental sciences.
The 2026 laureates are Professor Pan Jianwei (China) — a physicist and pioneer of quantum communication technologies, and Professor Sergei Sheiko (USA/Russia) — a scientist who developed a new class of programmable polymeric materials with tunable properties. Each laureate will receive a gold medal, a diploma, and $250,000.
Yulia Gorbunova, Skoltech President, RAS academician — whose own research lies in coordination chemistry and photoactive materials — commented on the significance of the Prize:
"The UNESCO Mendeleev Prize is more than just 'another award' in science — it is a symbol of the unbreakable connection between eras. Mendeleev demonstrated how the systems thinking of one person can bring order to the chaos of knowledge about matter. Today, the Prize, bearing Mendeleev's name, confirms that even one hundred and fifty years later, this approach remains relevant. The importance of this award lies in its connection with classical scientific heritage and modern breakthroughs — from quantum physics to new materials. It reminds the world that fundamental science is not an archive of formulas, but a living organism, where the geniuses of the past inspire the discoveries of the future. My sincere congratulations to the laureates, Professor Pan and Professor Sheiko, whose work demonstrates the crucial importance of fundamental research."
Fundamental science is the foundation upon which all research at Skoltech is built. The Prize bears the name of Dmitri Mendeleev, whose Periodic Table became a symbol of systems thinking in science. Today, our institute continues this tradition — from photonics and quantum materials to artificial intelligence and biomedicine.
The Prize is organized by UNESCO and the Government of the Russian Federation, with the participation of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the D.I. Mendeleev Russian Chemical Society. The General Partner of the ceremony is PhosAgro.

| 12 | 🎬🇦🇺 The documentary "An Endless Day" directed by Sergey Petriga, has been awarded an Honourable Mention in the "Best Short Films" category at the SCINEMA, the prestigious Australian international science film festival!
Out of a highly competitive global field, it was the only Russian project to be recognized among this year’s laureates
The documentary centers on Vladimir Kalyaev, head of Projects for Development at the Research Facilities Center's Fablab.
In December 2024, following a major oil spill in the Kerch Strait, Vladimir refused to stand by. Driven by a mission to protect the coastline, he traveled to Anapa to test experimental fuel-oil cleanup technologies under brutal, freezing storm conditions. What started as a high-stakes scientific experiment quickly evolved into a powerful community effort as local volunteers rallied around him, forming the grassroots "Kalyaev Design Bureau."
Their technology proved highly effective on the ground and continues to be used today to mitigate environmental damage. The film beautifully captures this unique journey, showing how scientific innovation, paired with genuine human empathy, can successfully tackle ecological disasters
A massive congratulations to Sergey Petriga, Vladimir Kalyaev, and the entire creative team on this well-deserved international recognition! 🌟 | 438 |

| 19 | 🧪 There is a distinct kind of wonder in modern materials science: taking abstract computer code and using it to summon tangible, new materials into existence. This week, two milestones underscore how far that journey has taken Skoltech Distinguished Professor Artem R. Oganov.
🏅 First, Professor Oganov received China’s State Science and Technology Award, the country’s highest scientific honor, presented to him in person by Chinese President Xi Jinping. This moment recognizes a two-decade-long pursuit: the USPEX algorithm.
Back in the mid-2000s, Oganov built a way to predict the crystal structures of substances without needing a single scrap of experimental data. It was an intellectual leap that turned the supercomputer-heavy world of material discovery on its head. By 2025, that same computational power was effectively shrunk down to run on a standard laptop, democratizing access to the kind of chemistry that once required massive infrastructure.
Research efforts led by Professor Oganov have resulted in the discovery of dozens of promising new materials, including unique helium compounds, transparent sodium, superhard boron, and new sodium and potassium chlorides.
📰 Alongside this recognition, Oganov is stepping into a new role as Editor-in-Chief of The Innovation Insights, a journal focused on deep, interdisciplinary research. It is committed to fostering interdisciplinary innovation, highlighting groundbreaking advancements, and addressing major challenges for the benefit of society.
🚀 Congratulations and best wishes for new scientific discoveries! | 579 |
