Originally used to describe the capacity of materials to return to their original form after pressure, the term is now applied to systems that can withstand disturbances while continuing to function effectively. Researchers emphasize that resilience should not be confused with resistance. A resistant system attempts to prevent change, whereas a resilient system adapts to changing conditions without losing its essential characteristics. For example, an ecosystem may recover from a wildfire through the regeneration of plant species, even though its appearance and species composition temporarily change. Similarly, a business may survive an economic crisis by modifying its products or services rather than maintaining its previous strategy. Studies have identified several factors that contribute to resilience. Diversity is one of the most important, since systems with multiple components or alternative pathways are generally less vulnerable to disruption. Learning also plays a crucial role. Organizations and communities that evaluate past experiences are often better prepared to respond to future challenges. However, resilience has its limits. Extremely severe or repeated disturbances may exceed the capacity of a system to recover, resulting in permanent change or collapse.
