The Dunning–Kruger Effect is a cognitive bias in which individuals with limited knowledge or skill in a particular domain tend to overestimate their competence. At the same time, those with greater expertise are often more aware of the complexity of the subject and may assess their own abilities more cautiously. The phenomenon was first described by psychologists David Dunning and Justin Kruger in 1999.
One explanation is that the skills required to perform a task successfully are often the same skills needed to evaluate one’s own performance accurately. As a result, those with insufficient competence may also lack the ability to recognize their mistakes.
