Q. Is it permissible to learn English and Other Languages?
A. Yes. It is permissible. The issue is not with learning a language. Languages are merely tools. What is blameworthy is imitating the disbelief, morals, and corrupt customs of a people.
Allah Almighty said:
“And We did not send any messenger except with the language of his people to make things clear to them.”
— Surah Ibrahim, verse 4
Allah Almighty said:
“And among His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the diversity of your languages and your colors. Indeed, in that are signs for those of knowledge.”
— Surah Ar-Rum, verse 22
This establishes that languages are a means of communication and clarification.
Zayd ibn Thabit رضي الله عنه said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered me to learn the writing of the Jews, saying: ‘By Allah, I do not trust the Jews with my correspondence.’”
— al-Tirmidhi
Thus, learning foreign languages for beneficial purposes is from the guidance of the Prophet ﷺ.
As for the statement:
“Whoever learns the language of a people will be safe from their plot.”
Although it is weak (da’if), its meaning is sound.
And there are many benefits of learning other languages. From amongst them includes:
• Conveying Islam and calling others to Allah.
• Seeking knowledge and benefiting from scholars and books.
• Understanding people and communicating with them.
• Protecting oneself from deception and misunderstanding.
• Translating Islamic knowledge and spreading the truth.
• Facilitating trade, travel, and other beneficial worldly affairs.
• Following the example of Zayd ibn Thabit
Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله said:
“Language is from the greatest signs of Allah and from the distinguishing characteristics by which nations are recognised.”
— Majmu’ al-Fatawa
Learning English or any other language is permissible. It may even become recommended or obligatory when it serves Islam, protects the Muslims, or aids in conveying the message of Allah. The problem is not in learning the language of a people. The problem is when one learns the language of a people and admires their falsehood, imitates and adopts their falsehood, their morals, beliefs, and ways. Abandoning his own identity or mixing it. The believer takes wisdom and benefit wherever it may be found while remaining firm upon his Aqidah (creed).

We can argue and dispute with anyone and everyone but you cannot dispute with Allah. You cannot ask Allah why He does this or why He doesn’t do that. It’s Allah. This is the way. Sometimes it gets hard, sometimes difficulty succumbs us but Allah does not burden a soul more than it can bare. Verily with hardship comes ease. That’s why we have to remember that this life is only temporary, it’s a test. That crunching pain in the heart does disappear, and life will resume after you’ve overcome your hurdles. You’ll come out better and with higher faith for indeed Allah is always there, He does not sleep nor does He slumber! That’s why we have to prioritise, so if you ever find yourself in a situation where you don’t know what to do, prioritise. Allah before anything. What comes first is pleasing Allah, and naturally after that everything will fall in line.

Dear Shaykh,
I want you to know that everything unfolding is, by Allah’s decree, a source of khayr for you. The efforts of others to harm or discredit you are, in reality, a testament to the reach and impact of your da‘wah.
Having found no legitimate criticism to level against you, they resort to childish tactics and empty distractions. Such behavior only reveals the weakness of their position.
Few possess the sincerity that Allah has granted you. Your words carry a sincerity that reaches hearts the moment they are heard, and this is a gift that cannot be manufactured or imitated.
May Allah preserve you, increase you in steadfastness, and make every trial a means of raising your rank.
I love you dear Shaykh
WAllah there is no one like you.

And We have sent down to you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) the Book (this Qur’an) in truth, confirming the Scripture that came before it and Muhaymin (trustworthy in highness and a witness) over it (old Scriptures). So judge among them by what Allah has revealed, and follow not their vain desires, diverging away from the truth that has come to you. To each among you, We have prescribed a law and a clear way. If Allah had willed, He would have made you one nation, but that (He) may test you in what He has given you; so compete in good deeds. The return of you (all) is to Allah; then He will inform you about that in which you used to differ.
— Surah Ma’idah 5:48
• This means every book and religion that came before the Quran and the Prophet has been abrogated. The Quran came to be ruled with and to be judged with.
• Allah took a promise to preserve and protect the Qur’an until the Judgement Day.

Q: Is it permissible to teach Religious Studies in school if I am required to teach about other religions too?
A: It is not permissible to teach any religion besides Islam because Islam is the only religion accepted by Allah, and it is the final religion that has prevailed over all other religions until the Day of Judgement.
Allah says:
“Truly, the religion with Allah is Islam.”
— Surah Aal ‘Imran 3:19
The Prophet ﷺ became upset when Umar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه brought pages from the Torah and said:
“Are you in doubt, O son of Al-Khattab? By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, I have brought it to you pure and clear. Do not ask them about anything, lest they tell you something true and you reject it, or they tell you something false and you believe it. By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, if Musa (Moses) عليه السلام were alive today, he would have no choice but to follow me.”
— Musnad Ahmad
Islam is the last and final religion sent by Allah for all mankind until the Day of Judgement. The Qur’an is complete and sufficient guidance.
Allah says:
“This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.”
— Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:3
Allah also says:
“And We have sent down to you the Book (the Qur’an) as an exposition of everything, a guidance, a mercy, and glad tidings for Muslims.”
— Surah An-Nahl 16:89
Allah says:
“And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers.”
— Surah Aal ‘Imran 3:85
Therefore, the Muslim should hold firmly to the Qur’an and Sunnah, call people to Islam, and not participate in spreading disbelief or confusing the truth with falsehood. We make da‘wah to the Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah of the Messenger ﷺ.
We believe in and accept every Messenger and every Book originally revealed by Allah. Whoever rejects any Messenger from the Messengers of Allah or any Book revealed by Allah is not a Muslim.
From the pillars of Imaan is to believe in:
- Allah,
- His Angels,
- His Books,
- His Messengers,
- The Last Day,
- And Divine Decree, the good and the bad of it.
However, all previous religions and legislations were abrogated by the coming of Muhammad ﷺ, who is the seal and final Messenger sent to all of mankind.
Allah says:
“Muhammad is not the father of any man among you, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the last (end) of the Prophets.”
— Surah Al-Ahzab 33:40
The original revelations given to the previous Prophets were from Allah in truth, but they do not remain today in their original revealed form. They have been altered, changed, and tampered with over time.
Allah says:
“Then woe to those who write the Book with their own hands and then say, ‘This is from Allah,’ to purchase with it a little price!”
— Surah Al-Baqarah 2:79
Had those scriptures remained upon their original revelation, they would have guided their followers to Islam and to the belief that Muhammad ﷺ is the last and final Messenger of Allah.
Therefore, salvation today is on through following Islam, the Qur’an, and the authentic Sunnah of the Messenger ﷺ.
Those who follow unity of religion (interfaith) or Abrahamic accord, they have nothing to do with Islam at all. Most of the mosques, (if not all), are all following that and Islam is free from that. They are committing apostasy.
