ICTP Associates Seminars are part personal, part scientific, with speakers sharing their career trajectory and experiences, then introducing their research field and work. In this seminar, Prof. Reza Ejtehadi from Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, will discuss being a scientist in Iran, and work on active matter in his group in Iran. Abstract As it is going to be the custom in this series of seminars, in the first part I will present a picture of the life of a scientist in Iran to see how being active under these circumstances can differ from the general image of the usual activity. n the second part I will give an overview of the search activities of my group in Iran. We focus on soft and biological matters and in the last decade we have also become interested in active particles, active polymers and active matters. #Postdoc in Foundations for Emergent Deception in Human-AI Interaction We are seeking to recruit a postdoctoral researcher to work on the project "DeceptionWeb: Foundations for Emergent Deception in Human-AI Interaction", funded by a UCPH Convergence Grant and led by Pepa Atanasova (Computer Science), Ingo Zettler (Copenhagen Center for Social Data Science and Department of Psychology), and Egor Starkov (Economics). The project's goal is to build a foundational framework for understanding emergent deception in human-AI interaction by uniting behavioural-psychological, economic-strategic, and machine learning perspectives. https://candidate.hr-manager.net/ApplicationInit.aspx/?cid=3010&departmentId=19976&ProjectId=163590&MediaId=4917

The Lab of Robert Legenstein at Graz University of Technology (Austria) https://www.tugraz.at/institute/iml/people/prof-legenstein/ is offering a funded PhD position (Univ. Assistant) in the areas Brain-inspired Machine Learning/Spiking Neural Networks. In paticular, we will investigate brain-inspired models that bridge between sub-symbolic and symbolic artificial intelligence approaches in the context of the Cluster of Excellence Bilateral AI: https://www.bilateral-ai.net A background in Machine Learning, Computer Science, or Mathematics is desirable, as well as evidence for excellent prior performance as a student. Too Lazy to Use Claude Code for Research https://youtu.be/8jo91yMtD_E In this special episode of Too Lazy to Read the Paper I talk to YY Ahn about using Claude Code for Research. Normally in Too Lazy to Read the Paper, somebody explains a paper to me, because reading papers is hard and talking to people is fun and natural. And if someone's too lazy to read the paper, they're definitely too lazy to read the manual. So today there's a new format. There's no paper. Instead there's a thing we're all talking about in the shadows – agentic coding, Claude Code. The whole business of handing an AI your research and letting it write and run the code – and my sense is that getting started on this is a big hurdle to a lot of folks. So to help them (and myself, I'm sitting down with all-round genious, renessaince man, deep thinker, conneseur of all things coding and living in the terminal, and honest, decent person, YY Ahn.

Informal connections outweigh coauthorship ties in academic impact The term “invisible college” refers to communication networks that help scientists exchange information and advance knowledge. These networks create social capital, granting access to resources like new ideas and support. Measuring those intangible exchanges is an empirical challenge. Here we approximate these ties through the analysis of the “thank you” notes appended to journal articles. Our findings show that scholars disconnected from this layer of academic social capital have lower publication impact. We also show that informal ties provide support not captured by coauthorship ties, which reflect a more rigid form of collaboration. Documenting how informal structures of support operate can help leverage collective resources in the pursuit of shared intellectual goals. https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2511050123
