I am imprisoned in a room; they do not allow me to go outside. Late Lala Atiq is sitting beside me. I have three apples in my hand and offer them to him, but he says, “I do not eat these. A great blessing has come to you — share it with your loved ones and be generous.”
I do not know what happens, but they finally allow me to leave. I hold a fragment of the Quran in my hand and tell them, “There is a madrasa there. I will go read a few verses of the Quran so I may feel better.”
I leave the house with my jailers. Along the way, a stream of crystal-clear water passes before my eyes, shaded by a great mulberry tree with long branches stretched above it. I tell my companions, “I want to eat some mulberries. It has been years since I last tasted them.” They allow me. I pick seven mulberries from the branches.
Then we reach a fork in the road, and I separate from the two guards. I arrive at an alley where that madrasa is said to be. I have never been there, never even seen it — I had only heard that people recite the Quran there.
I come to a room with no door. Its walls are made of glass. Only one window is open, no larger than the screen of a phone. Strange objects are arranged upon the shelves, and half the room is filled with chairs. I think to myself: chairs, in this heat?
I knock on the glass, hoping that if someone is there, they might recite a few lines of the Quran for me. To the left, a woman is sitting with her head resting against the wall. Before I can speak, she says:
“Rezma Seraahat… at last you came. I waited for you so long, and you arrived so late.”
I said, “Do you know me?”
She replied, “Who is there that does not know you?”
I said, “I am tired.”
She said, “I know.”
I said, “I want it all to end.”
She answered, “‘In that verse, what is there but sorrow and grief to interpret?’”
I asked, “So as long as I live, this grief will remain with me?”
She said, “You chose it yourself.”
I said, “Every night it feels as though I am being torn into pieces. Why does no one…?”
She interrupted, “Other than your own heart, whom do you ask? You are still wandering in the noise outside yourself. Become silent, so you may hear its voice from within.”
I said, “If He is within me, then what is this emptiness? This fear that devours me every night? This burning? If He is within me, why does He feel so far away?”
She said, “Far? Don’t you think perhaps you are the one who has gone far away?”
She placed her hand upon my chest and said, “You have forgotten… You have lost everything because you keep searching for it outside yourself.”
I fell silent. Then she asked, “Do you want your son, or something within him? If you discover that thing, you will see he was only a mirror for yourself.”
I said, “I am afraid.”
She replied, “Your pot sits upon the fire, and you cook with a joyful heart. They are not like this. Do you think that because they set you aflame, they themselves became happy?”
I said, “I must go. It is late. I have to return to the prison.”
After walking a few steps, I looked back. Behind me was a field of chamomile flowers and a girl dancing, her hair surrendered to the wind. I looked into her eyes — how much she resembled me.
Clutching my Quran to my chest, I ran toward home. Sobbing, I ran toward home. Sometimes I looked behind me and danced among the chamomile flowers. Sometimes I only ran.
I ran and ran and ran.
The more I ran, the larger the field became and the farther away the house seemed. I reached that tree. I sat beside it and cried until my heart was emptied, and I awoke to the sound of my own sobbing.

Repost from تاکستان انگور

Although I knew the stories belonged to ages long past, I felt that a tangible suffering like this was what bound together the essence of human life and destiny. People and times were different, yet the story was always the same: the battle of good against evil, sorrow against joy, despair against hope. I watched and learned how my heroes rescued themselves and others from the claws of grief, pain, and hopelessness. I saw myself no less than Tahmineh, Sudabeh, Rudabeh, and Gordafarid. Whatever the case, I came from their lineage, and like those legendary lion-hearted women, I too had to take my fate into my own hands and refuse to be defeated by demonic forces. The only problem was that in my life there was no horse, no army, no demon, no dragon, and no Rustam-like glory or shame. There was only me and a few walls within which I had to wander from dawn till dusk, with no battlefield except the battlefield of the old women’s beliefs in the harem — and perhaps fighting those worn-out ancient beliefs was even harder than battling the White Demon itself. #mawlana #kimya_khatun
