MGIMO: Start of a Great Journey 🚀 Choosing a university and a career path is a significant decision, and hearing from those who have already walked that path is invaluable. We spoke with Igor Tkachenko, MGIMO graduate and Attaché at Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He shared his journey of choosing a profession, memories of student life, and insights into building a career in international relations. 🔎What brought you to international relations? ➖Growing up, I always had the example of my father, Vsevolod Tkachenko, who has worked at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for over forty years. I was fortunate: from childhood, I had the opportunity to become acquainted with the diplomatic profession and life abroad. I spent about ten years in Africa and finished the school at the Russian Embassy in Ethiopia. The decisive factor in my career choice was, and remains, the desire to continue the family tradition, as well as my love for African countries. Having visited this continent once, it's impossible not to fall in love with it. 🔎Which people or events at the university became a source of motivation for you? ➖My main sources of motivation were my microeconomics professor, Anna Makarenko, and my classmates – members of the MGIMO Economic Club. The university offers ample opportunities for self-fulfillment, and it prompted me to launch my own project. In 2019, together with like-minded peers, we founded a student organization – the "Russia-Africa: What's Next?" Forum. 👔Over the years, thanks to our work and the unwavering support from the Russian MFA and MGIMO, including personally from the Rector Anatoly Torkunov, we have held four grand-scale forums that brought together about 4,500 participants from over 60 countries.

🔎 When did you first feel that you had chosen the right profession? ➖When I got into my dream university – MGIMO – I realized that I was genuinely interested in studying: attending classes, listening to lectures, and preparing reports for seminars. But I truly fell in love with the profession during my internship at the Russian Embassy in Kenya. There, I gained invaluable work experience and became completely convinced that I was doing what I was meant to do. 🔎 What aspects of student life do you miss the most? ➖I miss language classes, as no other format allows you to maintain such a high level of language proficiency. Sometimes I also miss the meetings or team-building sessions we had with the team of the Forum's student secretariat. But I sincerely believe that the new generation of students will continue what we started. I am grateful to Valery Zhuchkov and Varvara Potapova, the current Chair of the Forum, for developing this initiative. 🔎 Why would you recommend MGIMO specifically to international students? ➖MGIMO offers some of the most competitive educational programs. The First Conference of the International Association of Young Diplomats 🖥️ ⚡️️️️️️On February 12, a landmark event took place at MGIMO: the First Conference of the International Association of Young Diplomats. The event was organized by the MGIMO International Unit and the Council of Young Diplomats of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The conference brought together young diplomats from around the world, as well as their senior colleagues — high-ranking diplomats from approximately 60 countries, including the Ambassadors Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Lebanon, Sierra Leone, and Pakistan.

The forum opened with a welcoming video address from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergei Lavrov. ➖The Russian Foreign Minister echoed the words of President Vladimir Putin, stating that "Peace does not come by itself; it is built, and it is built every day," emphasizing that a special role in this construction belongs to young diplomats. Many of them are graduates of MGIMO — a university that today is one of the largest scientific and educational centers in Russia and the world. A welcome address to the conference participants was delivered by Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Rector of MGIMO, Anatoly Torkunov. ➖Anatoly Torkunov expressed confidence that the growing movement of young diplomats will receive support both in Russian society and among foreign colleagues. ➖The Rector paid special attention to international students: today, about 1,500 foreign citizens are studying at MGIMO, and this number continues to grow.

The start date for document submission period was not chosen by chance. February 10th is Diplomatic Workers' Day in Russia — a professional holiday for people whose service often remains "behind the scenes". This date is associated with the first recorded mention (on February 10, 1549) of the “Posolsky Prikaz” (Ambassadorial Department), which became the prototype of the modern Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia. This day serves to honour diplomats while also reaffirming the profession's core principles that MGIMO embeds in its educational mission: fostering mutual respect among nations, pursuing a balance of interests, and upholding dialogue and international law.

The registration platform for international applicants to MGIMO is now open.
