🌐🇮🇩MGIMO Day in Jakarta, held on February 2 at the Russian House, was the final highlight of MGIMO's working visit to Southeast Asia. The event was vibrant and dynamic, much like the city itself. ▪️The meeting brought together over 150 schoolchildren and students, as well as distinguished guests and media representatives.
👔"For me, this is truly a special day because here I am not only as the Ambassador but also as a MGIMO graduate, like many diplomats at our embassy," said Sergey Tolchenov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Indonesia. 👔"I am glad to represent my alma mater here. MGIMO is one of the best universities in the world, a view shared by political elites in both Europe and Asia. Henry Kissinger said MGIMO is Russia's Harvard, but I can say MGIMO is even better because it is in Russia," said Nikita Shilikov, Head of the Russian Center of Science and Culture in Jakarta.
➡️ The International Marketing Group presented MGIMO's educational programs and student life, along with a series of engaging quizzes on the University's history and Russian-Indonesian relations. ▶️A presentation of MGIMO's International Institute of Energy Policy and Diplomacy and a brief lecture on energy diplomacy were given by Sergey Vasilyev, Deputy Director of the International Institute of Energy Policy and Diplomacy. 👉 Special moments of the meeting included speeches by MGIMO student Safina Lutfiya Zakhro and MGIMO alumna from Indonesia Fitria Ulfiani, who shared their personal experiences of studying and how their university years influenced their professional and personal growth. To conclude, we invited participants to capture their thoughts, dreams, and emotions by completing a few phrases about the future of the world and their own prospects: ⚪True partnership means... The world I want to build is... Russia and ASEAN together can... The participants' answers are in the photos. Undoubtedly, a single post cannot convey the full spectrum of emotions and the atmosphere of lively interaction experienced by the organizers and attendees that day. We greatly enjoyed meeting all the participants and sincerely hope that such events will become a wonderful tradition for us in all corners of the world. We sincerely thank the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Indonesia, the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Jakarta, and MGIMO students from Indonesia for their active participation and contribution to the success of MGIMO Day. We look forward to new joint projects and meetings. Learn more about MGIMO on our website. 🌐 MGIMO International (ENG) / МГИМО для иностранцев (RUS)

Continuing the visit to Southeast Asia, the MGIMO team is currently in Indonesia – a country that, like Russia, places great importance on a multi-vector foreign policy and independence on the global stage. Today, 11 students from Indonesia are studying at MGIMO. Specially for #MGIMOinside, we spoke with one of them – Raisya Rahmawati, a second-year master’s student in the program "Political Economy of the ASEAN-Russia Strategic Partnership." ▪️Why did you decide to study in Russia rather than in other countries? 👔I believe there are many commonalities between Indonesia and Russia, such as ethnic diversity and a strong respect for traditional values. These similarities initially motivated me to pursue Russian Studies at Universitas Indonesia during my bachelor’s degree. Through this program, I learned many fascinating aspects beyond culture, including politics and language and decided to continue this path.👔 ▪️To what extent have your expectations aligned with the reality of studying at MGIMO? 👔My expectations have been largely fulfilled, and in many ways, exceeded. At MGIMO, I am able to continue learning Russian while also sharing my own culture, especially through MGIMO’s ASEAN Centre. Moreover, I am studying subjects closely related to my bachelor’s background in Russian Studies, now combined with my strong interest in ASEAN affairs. Although the education process here is quite different from that in Indonesia, this difference has become one of the most valuable and enriching parts of my academic experience.👔 ▪️What are your impressions of life in Moscow? 👔I am truly grateful to myself for having the courage to live far from home, because the experience has been incredibly worthwhile. Moscow offers so many conveniences, warm and welcoming people, and a unique atmosphere that makes me want to stay longer. I remember many of my professors at Universitas Indonesia sharing stories about their time studying in Moscow, some even naming their children with Russian-inspired names. Now that I am here, I fully understand why life in Russia leaves such a lasting impression.👔 ▪️What are your career aspirations after MGIMO? 👔I believe that every MGIMO alumni brings unique interests and expertise, and this diversity is precisely what strengthens international cooperation. In my case, studying at MGIMO has significantly shaped my research interests, particularly in cooperation within BRICS and in nuclear energy, an area in which Russia is highly advanced. I would like to continue contributing in strengthening long-term bilateral relations through research and people-to-people diplomacy.👔 We thank Raisya for an open and substantive dialogue and sincerely wish her every success in implementing her plans for the benefit of cooperation between Russia, Indonesia, and ASEAN! MGIMO in Lao 🌐 🇱🇦 On January 27–29, the MGIMO team visited the Lao People's Democratic Republic, and these days turned out to be truly intense and inspiring. During this time, International Marketing Group, with the support of the School of International Economic Relations and the International Institute of Energy Policy and Diplomacy: ➖held "MGIMO Day" at the Russian House in Vientiane, ➖presented our university at several schools in Lao, ➖and showcased MGIMO at the World Education Expos. In total, over these few days, we managed to interact with more than 300 school students. We were delighted to see the genuine interest with which the students listened to stories about Russia, the opportunities to study in our country, and about MGIMO.
Many shared personal stories: their grandparents studied at Soviet universities, and they would like to continue this remarkable tradition.
❗️We believe that our visit to Laos was another step toward bringing our countries closer together, and we look forward to welcoming students from this sunny country within the walls of MGIMO! We sincerely thank the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Lao and the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Vientiane for their support, assistance in organizing the visit, and warm hospitality. "MGIMO Day" in Vientiane: Field Report 🌐🇱🇦 On January 27, the MGIMO International Marketing Group held "MGIMO Day" at the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Vientiane, Laos. The meeting was attended by Lao school students studying the Russian language and sincerely interested in opportunities to study in Russia. The event was marked by a warm, intimate, and truly friendly atmosphere. On this day, the students: ➡ got a closer look at MGIMO and its academic life; ➡ learned about the nuances of admission process for international applicants; ➡ took part in an interactive quiz dedicated to the long-standing experience of Russian-Laotian relations. 📚 Leading MGIMO professors gave lectures to the schoolchildren:
Sergei Vasiliev, Deputy Director of the International Institute of Energy Policy and Diplomacy, spoke about the opportunities and programs of MIEP and delivered a lecture on the role of energy diplomacy in the modern world. ✔Anastasia Makarenko, Deputy Academic Supervisor of the MGIMO Economic Club Oeconomicus, provided more details about the School of International Economic Relations and conducted an interactive lecture on economic cooperation between Russia and Laos.
❗️It was especially valuable that the event saw the active participation of Siviengphet Phetvorasack, former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Lao People's Democratic Republic to the Russian Federation. We thank all the guests for their interest and engagement, and also express our sincere gratitude to the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Vientiane and the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Lao People's Democratic Republic for their assistance in organizing the event. The MGIMO team continues its tour in Southeast Asian countries, and our next stop is the Lao People's Democratic Republic! 🌐🇱🇦 Ahead of this visit, we spoke with 2nd-year Master's student Panita Huangphachan from Laos, who is studying "Politics and Economics of Russia-ASEAN Strategic Partnership." Especially for #MGIMOinside, she talked about her choice of university, relations between Russia and Laos, and, of course, the mission of MGIMO graduates. ❔Why did you choose Russia, and MGIMO in particular, for your education? ➖The opportunity to study in Russia came thanks to an offer from the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs. My parents, both graduates of Soviet universities, were confident that MGIMO is a unique and prestigious university. Now, in my sixth year of study at MGIMO, I understand that following their advice and taking the MGIMO entrance exams was one of my best decisions, for which I am very grateful to them. What turned out to be the most surprising in the educational process? ➖I was pleasantly surprised by the high level of practical orientation at MGIMO. It is not just an academic institution, but a platform for real diplomatic work.
The ASEAN Center is based here, the Vitaly Churkin Moscow International Model UN is held, and many other events with the participation of heads of state and diplomats take place.
Are there any courses that have influenced your professional interests and plans? The ASEAN Center at MGIMO had a particularly strong influence on me. It was this center that helped me finally define my academic and professional goals. I was so inspired that after completing my bachelor's degree at MGIMO, I entered the Master's program in "Politics and Economics of Russia-ASEAN Strategic Partnership."How do you assess the current state of relations between Russia and Laos and the prospects for their development? ➖Our relations are based on a solid historical foundation and continue to develop dynamically. High-level visits, such as the meeting between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Thongloun Sisoulith last July, are proof of this. Based on mutual respect and strategic rapprochement, Russian-Laotian relations have excellent prospects for growth in trade, energy, and humanitarian cooperation. ❔What role do MGIMO graduates play in developing this strong friendship between the two peoples?MGIMO graduates form the backbone of Lao diplomacy. Our current Minister of Foreign Affairs Thongsavanh Phomvihane, Deputy Prime Minister Saleumsay Kommasith, and the Lao Ambassador to Russia Siphandone Oybounbouathao are all MGIMO graduates. This creates a strong network of mutual understanding and trust. We, as graduates, possess not only deep knowledge but also a personal connection with Russia.
I plan to build a career in the diplomatic service, with a special focus on
strengthening the strategic partnership between Laos and Russia
, including within the ASEAN framework.
The conversation with Panita reminded us of a simple truth: behind big politics and strategic partnership there are always personal stories, choices, and the enthusiasm of young people – MGIMO students and graduates. We thank Panita for her sincere conversation and have no doubt that this story will inspire even more future applicants to choose MGIMO as their alma mater! MGIMO Day in Hanoi: How It Was 🌐🇻🇳
"Vietnamese MGIMO graduates, myself included, take great pride in being part of the MGIMO family!", – Nguyen Phuong Nga, MGIMO alumna, former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, and former Chairwoman of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations.
On January 26, Hanoi, Vietnam, successfully hosted "MGIMO Day" – the first large-scale event in a series of meetings between the university's representatives and prospective students from ASEAN countries. 👉 The event brought together over one hundred and fifty school and university students, as well as representatives from the Embassy of Russia in Vietnam, the Russian House in Hanoi, MGIMO alumni, and journalists. Warm greetings were addressed to the audience by H.E. Gennady Bezdetko, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and Vladimir Murashkin, Head of the Russian Centre of Science and Culture in Hanoi. A valuable addition was the address to future applicants by Nguyen Phuong Nga, a MGIMO alumna, former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, and former Chairwoman of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations. ➖Another alumnus of our alma mater, Nguyen Manh Tien, Deputy Chairman of the Committee for National Defense, Security, and International Relations of the National Assembly of Vietnam and a member of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Russia, was also a guest of honor at the event.
The International Marketing Group presented the distinguished guests with commemorative gifts and
letters of gratitude from MGIMO Rector A.Torkunov.
Then, the guests were fully immersed in the university atmosphere: MGIMO International Marketing Group gave a presentation about the university and answered all questions about admissions and the academic process in detail. 📚 The immersion into academic life continued with engaging lectures by leading MGIMO professors: Sergey Vasilyev, Deputy Director of the International Institute of Energy Policy and Diplomacy, spoke to prospective students about the intricacies of energy diplomacy, and Anastasia Makarenko, Deputy Academic Supervisor of the MGIMO Economic Club Oeconomicus, delivered an interactive lecture "The Economic Puzzle: Why is Cooperation Beneficial for Russia and Vietnam?" ⚡️A special highlight was the "Russia-Vietnam Strategic Partnership" quiz for future leaders, where the most active participants received commemorative prizes from the university. 🇷🇺 This eventful day concluded with a performance by the Vietnamese ensemble "Berezka," whose sincerity once again reminded everyone of the deep cultural ties between the two countries. This is how we remember MGIMO Day in Hanoi – vibrant, informative, and truly inspiring. Thank you to everyone who was with us! We extend special gratitude to the Embassy of Russia in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Russian House in Hanoi, and the MGIMO Vietnamese Association for their invaluable assistance in organizing this meeting. Inside View: Interview with a MGIMO Student from Vietnam 🗣️ The MGIMO delegation is on the visit to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, a country geographically distant but close to us in spirit. On the occasion of the visit, we spoke with Nguyen Vu Minh Hoang, a third-year student of the School of International Relations at MGIMO from Vietnam. Especially for the #MGIMOinside column, Nguyen Vu Minh Hoang shared his experience of studying at MGIMO and reflected on the present and future of Russian-Vietnamese relations. 👉 What influenced your choice of MGIMO and Russia for your studies? Before entering MGIMO, I studied at the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, where I often heard about MGIMO's reputation as a leading educational center in the field of international relations.
Russia is a land of opportunity; it was such even for the generation of our fathers and grandfathers. The USSR came to Vietnam's aid at a time when no one else did, and today Russia remains one of our country's closest partners.
👉 What aspects of the educational process at MGIMO surprised you the most? At first, I had to get used to the exam sessions. The format of lectures and seminars was also new, as the educational process in Vietnam is quite different. But before you know it, everything new and unfamiliar becomes native and familiar, because professors and fellow students are always ready to help. 👉 Do you manage to maintain a connection with Vietnamese culture in Moscow? If you don't count missing my family and feeling nostalgic for the tropical climate, it feels like I never left home. I am truly fortunate to study at a university that respects diversity and honors every nationality and culture. Thanks to MGIMO's support, our Vietnamese student community organizes a "Vietnam Day" within the walls of our alma mater every year – a tradition that is already ten years old. 👉 How do you assess the current state of Russia-Vietnam relations and the prospects for their development? Today, our relations are at an unprecedentedly high level of Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The year 2025 was a landmark: we marked the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations. I see enormous prospects for cooperation in energy, digital transformation, and education. Despite global instability, Russia remains a reliable partner for Vietnam, and our peoples are only growing closer. 👉 What role can MGIMO graduates play in developing relations between our countries? MGIMO graduates are in high demand at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam. Of course, this does not mean that every Vietnamese graduate will go into the public sector. I know many Vietnamese MGIMO graduates who have gone into private companies and are contributing to the development of Russian-Vietnamese trade, tourism, and research cooperation.
MGIMO graduates possess all the tools necessary to
strengthen the ties between our countries
, and I will undoubtedly make every effort to contribute to this mission.
We thank Nguyen Vu Minh Hoang and the Vietnamese student community for the heartfelt conversation and assistance in organizing MGIMO's visit to Vietnam. We hope that after our meetings in Vietnam, even more Vietnamese students will choose MGIMO! Learn more about MGIMO on the website. 🌐 MGIMO International (ENG) / МГИМО для иностранцев (RUS)
