Moscow City Day 2026
🇷🇺 This weekend, Moscow is celebrating its 879th anniversary! This is the perfect opportunity for international first-year students to explore the capital and dive straight into its festive atmosphere.
This year, more than 500 events are lined up, including concerts, guided tours, workshops, sports activities, and film screenings. In our new #MoscowForStudents series, we have prepared a list of spots for an unforgettable weekend.
📍 State Historical Museum
Do you want to see what Moscow looked like centuries ago? The museum’s holiday programme features guided tours of Red Square, stories about Moscow under Ivan the Terrible and the first Romanovs, and accounts of the events of 1812.
📍 Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve
Visitors can enjoy jazz and classical music concerts, as well as choir and solo performances. There will also be creative workshops where you can craft your own souvenir.
🎼 This is the perfect option if you want to take a stroll through a picturesque park, enjoy live music, and soak up the atmosphere of a major city celebration.
📍 Luzhniki
If you’d rather spend your weekend staying active, head to Luzhniki. There is something for everyone: you can play padel, join a SUP tour, tackle the climbing wall, go roller-skating or karting, test your skills on an obstacle course, or join a speed Rubik’s Cube challenge.

| 3 |  +6🌐 MGIMO Integration Days: First Steps of International Students at University
On August 26-29, MGIMO hosted the Integration Days for international students. This annual series of events is designed for first-year students from around the world to help them settle into university life. During these days, students get to know MGIMO, receive useful tips on adapting to life in Russia, make new friends, and discover the history, culture, and diversity of the country.
📍 First Meeting
The programme began with a welcome meeting with Stanislav Surovtsev, Vice-Rector for Youth Policy, Social Work, and International Relations. International students were also welcomed by Vyacheslav Sutyrin, Advisor to the Rector's Office and Deputy Vice-Rector for Youth Policy, Social Work, and International Relations.
📌 Start Smart
Following the official greetings, representatives of the International Office gave a presentation on the key aspects of staying in Russia, including migration regulations and mandatory registration procedures for international students.
🗓️ Opportunities Beyond the Classroom
Students also learned about youth communities, volunteer activities, creative studios, sports clubs and other areas of student life that MGIMO offers.
Activists of the MGIMO Student Union and the MGIMO International Students Association introduced projects that can help first-year students quickly find like-minded people and explore extracurricular activities they enjoy.
🇷🇺 StudWay: Russian Culture Code
The next stop was an interactive campus quest that took freshmen on a journey across Russia.
The students became passengers on a train that travelled from Moscow to Kamchatka in one day. Each campus location was transformed into a station representing a particular Russian city or region. Participants discovered the traditions and unique features of different regions, while also learning more about MGIMO’s academic, cultural, social and sports facilities.
🇷🇺 Discovering Moscow
To help students get to know their new city, they took part in the “Heart of Moscow” quest tour.
They explored the capital’s historic centre in a quiz format, answering questions and collecting cards featuring picturesque views of Moscow and quotes by Russian classics. The most knowledgeable participants received memorable MGIMO merchandise.
🇷🇺 A Journey Across Russia
At the National Centre RUSSIA, participants went on a “Get to know Russia” excursion to discover the history, culture and traditions of the country’s regions.
There were also some pleasant surprises: students took part in a giveaway of matryoshka dolls featuring an image of the main MGIMO Campus.
❤️ The Integration Days have come to an end, but for MGIMO freshmen, this is only the beginning: lectures, seminars, student projects, and plenty of exciting experiences lie ahead!

⚡️ The Olympiad offers international school students a unique opportunity to pursue tuition-free studies at MGIMO.
During the past four seasons, over 11,000 students have taken part in the Olympiad, and more than 60 winners and prize-winners have already become MGIMO students!
🌏 This year, the competition is open to citizens of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Serbia, Mongolia, India, Iran, African countries and Latin American countries. For the first time, the Olympiad will also welcome citizens of China and ASEAN countries.
Participants will have the opportunity to test their knowledge of:

The competition will consist of two stages:

| 6 |  🌐 Today, as a part of our #MGIMOAlumni series, we highlight a special graduate — Anatoly Torkunov, Rector of MGIMO University, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary. On his birthday, we look back at the professional journey of a man whose career has been inseparably linked with MGIMO — from his days as a student to leading the University.
In 1972, Anatoly Torkunov graduated from MGIMO’s School of International Relations.
It was here that he met Sergey Lavrov, who would later become Russia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. Their meeting marked the beginning of a friendship that has lasted for decades.
After graduation, he made a choice that would shape his life for years to come: he devoted himself to teaching and academic research, eventually holding a doctoral degree in Political Science. From 1983 to 1986, Anatoly Torkunov was in the diplomatic service in the United States. Upon his return, he became Dean of his alma mater’s School of International Relations, later serving as the first Vice-Rector. In 1992, he was elected Rector of MGIMO University.
🔎 Yet his work extends far beyond the University. Anatoly Torkunov serves on the Board of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, heads the Russian International Studies Association and the United Nations Association of Russia, and serves on academic and advisory councils under government bodies.
📚 He is editor-in-chief of the journal “MGIMO Review of International Relations”, the author of more than 200 academic publications, and one of Russia’s leading experts in international relations.
🏠 Speaking about the University, Anatoly Torkunov emphasizes:
“MGIMO is a university that provides a comprehensive education — and, most importantly, an education that enables you to adapt, no matter how rapidly the world around you changes”.

Participants enjoyed an engaging programme:
📍 Lectures by MGIMO professors and regional experts;
📍 Visits to the Beslan School No. 1 Center for the Terrorism Prevention, the “Barbashovo Field” Memorial Complex, the Glory Memorial, and the Gazdanov brothers Monument;
📍 Excursions to the Digora Gorge, the Vakhtangov House, and the Opera and Ballet Theatre;
📍 Master-classes on making traditional Ossetian pies and learning the Ossetian folk dance Simd.
We spoke with Felix Ekanlu Abissoe, a 3d-year student at the School of International Relations from Benin, who shared his impressions of the trip.
❔ What was the most memorable part of the Summer School’s programme for you?
The Summer School was an amazing experience that I would recommend to every student. All the activities will remain unforgettable, but two moments will stay with me forever: visiting the school in Beslan and the Vakhtangov House.
📩 What impression did North Ossetia leave on you?
The beauty of the mountains and the ancient sites of Vladikavkaz will forever remain in my heart. The hospitality and warmth of the local people made our stay truly unforgettable. I was deeply impressed by how carefully the memory of the heroes is preserved and how traditions are passed down to younger generations.
🔗 How did this trip affect you personally?
For me, as an MGIMO student, this Summer School became a unique bridge between history and modern diplomacy.

| 8 |  +9Media, Mountains, and New Ideas: A Recap of the Russian-Kyrgyz Media Forum 🇷🇺🤝🇰🇬
On August 19–23, the MGIMO team made its way to the shores of the stunning Issyk-Kul Lake to take part in the 4th Russian-Kyrgyz Media Forum. The event was organized by the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University named after B.Yeltsin and Russia’s Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
🎓 Over 90 students from 17 universities across Russia and Kyrgyzstan dove headfirst into the world of media for several days. They attended lectures and workshops, collaborated in teams, exchanged experiences and, of course, made sure to soak up Kyrgyz culture and nature along the way.
Experts shared their know-how on working with text, video, and social media. They also discussed how the modern media environment is evolving, how to operate safely in the digital space, build trust through communication, and create content that truly resonates with audiences.
🌐MGIMO played an active role in the forum's educational program. We led a masterclass titled "How a University Becomes a Media Brand," drawing on our own experience to show how a university can shape its positioning, engage with diverse audiences, and turn its core messages into compelling media content. Activists from Let's Talk and the Student Union — Lada Obotina, Anastasia Bulanova (School of International Journalism), and Sofia Malkova (School of International Relations) — also shared their insights on managing student community media.
💡But it wasn't all theory. Participants teamed up and spent the forum developing their own media projects exploring how information policy can drive international cooperation. Each team defined their own concept, format, and execution plan. In the final pitch, they presented their work to experts and received professional feedback.
⭐️️️️Between lectures and teamwork, the participants had time to experience Kyrgyzstan in all its glory. They visited the "Rukh Ordo" Cultural Center named after Chingiz Aitmatov — a unique space on the shores of Issyk-Kul where history, culture, and the spiritual heritage of different peoples meet breathtaking lake and mountain panoramas.
🐎 The forum's highlight was a trip to the Semenovskoye Gorge — one of the most picturesque spots along the Issyk-Kul coast. There, the group went horseback riding, took in the mountain views, and — most importantly — left with fresh impressions and new creative inspiration.
A huge thank you to our hospitable friends from Kyrgyzstan for five incredible days! We hope many more joint projects, meetings, and ideas lie ahead ❤️

✔️ “Journey Across Russia” — an interactive tour at the National Centre “Russia”.

The first Museum of MGIMO History was established in 1984 to mark the Institute’s 40th anniversary. Today, its exhibition is housed in the Ivan Tyulin Scientific Library. It tells the story of MGIMO’s key milestones, as well as its faculty, scholars and graduates.
🔵 A dedicated section of the exhibition is devoted to the people who shaped the University’s legacy — from MGIMO’s 15 rectors to the professors who educated generations of students.
🔵 The museum also features a photo gallery of the University’s distinguished graduates.
🔵 Another section showcases a collection of gifts and souvenirs presented to MGIMO by heads of state, government agencies, embassies, educational institutions, graduates, and guests of the University.
Yet, the Museum is more than a space for preserving historical artifacts. It also hosts temporary themed exhibitions, film screenings, and events.
📍 The Museum regularly organizes visits to the Center of the History of the Russian Diplomatic Service at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, offering students a glimpse into the country’s primary foreign policy institution and allowing them to further explore Russia’s diplomatic heritage.
All exhibits in the Museum feature descriptions in both Russian and English.
🎓 The Museum of MGIMO History introduces students to the University’s traditions and values — those that have shaped its identity over the decades and continue to be passed down through generations.

| 12 |  🌐 Today, as part of our #MGIMOAlumni series, we remember an outstanding diplomat, a graduate of the School of International Relations, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations (2006–2017) — Vitaly Churkin.
Vitaly Churkin graduated from MGIMO University in 1974, and his brilliant career became a benchmark for the following generations of diplomats. At MGIMO, he gained not only a profound education but also that unquenchable energy and breadth of vision that would later impress his colleagues around the world.
🏛 Right after the graduation, Vitaly Churkin entered the diplomatic service. He worked at the Linguistic Department of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs and took part in the historic SALT‑II negotiations in Geneva and Vienna. In the 1980s, he was posted to the United States, and for his successful work in that country, he was awarded the diplomatic rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in the 1990s.
🌐 However, the main achievement of Vitaly Churkin’s career was his work at the United Nations, where from 2006 onward he defended Russia's interests in the UN Security Council.
During his years on the Security Council, he repeatedly exercised the veto power, firmly yet cogently safeguarding his country's national interests. He regularly addressed the media and clearly articulated Russia's position on various foreign policy issues.
🎓 In 2024, the memory of this outstanding diplomat was immortalized within the walls of his alma mater: a bust of Vitaly Churkin was solemnly unveiled at MGIMO. The ceremony served as a prelude to the anniversary Moscow International Model UN, which bears his name.
🔗 Sergey Lavrov, Russia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, spoke of Vitaly Churkin as follows:
A broadly erudite professional, masterfully wielding both word and pen, an extraordinarily energetic man — Vitaly Churkin left a bright mark in the annals of our country's foreign policy service.
Vitaly Churkin's career path is a vivid example of how a fundamental MGIMO education helps defend national interests at the highest level, strengthening a country's standing on the international stage.

The MGIMO Scientific Library bears the name of Ivan Tyulin — First Vice-Rector of MGIMO and an outstanding scholar who devoted many years to the University. On July 3, 2007, MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov announced the Academic Council's decision to perpetuate his memory by naming the library after him.
📖 Today, the Scientific Library's collection comprises over 740,000 items in 55 foreign languages, including unique manuscripts.
👆 But the MGIMO Library is not just about books! Students and faculty have access to numerous electronic resources and databases in the social sciences, economics, education, law, business, history, linguistics, literature, philosophy, sociology, and other fields.
Electronic resources provide access to:
✅ abstracts and bibliographic materials;
✅ statistical data and analytical reports;
✅ articles from more than 250 journals;
✅ information for country, market, and consumer analysis.
📜 A special place is occupied by the "Rare Book Online" project. In 2010, handwritten books from the library's collection were digitized, making these unique materials accessible to a wide range of readers.
🏛 Additionally, MGIMO houses the "MGIMO-University" Publishing House, which supports the University's educational process and academic activities. At the "Argument" bookstore on the MGIMO campus, you can find textbooks and teaching aids by faculty members, scholarly publications, diplomats' autobiographies, periodicals, and much more!

📍Yandex Maps & Moscow Metro
➡ Moscow is a huge city with one of the most extensive public transport systems in the world, so getting around can be challenging at first. These two apps will help you plan routes, navigate the metro and surface transport, find addresses and get around the city with confidence.
Tip: Save MGIMO and your dormitory addresses to your favourites right away — you’ll definitely find them useful during your first few days.
👉 Yandex Go
➡ You can use it to order a taxi, get food and other goods delivered, or rent a bike or e-scooter. The app is especially useful when you need to get to the university quickly, order dinner after a long day of classes or head out to explore Moscow.
🟥Gosuslugi
➡The Gosuslugi app and online portal provide access to a wide range of government services and allow you to handle many administrative matters online. For international students, it is an especially useful service to get familiar with during the first few weeks in Russia.
🚀A Russian bank’s app
➡If you open an account with a Russian bank, make sure to install its app and set up all the necessary ways to confirm transactions in advance. This will allow you to pay for purchases, make transfers, keep track of your spending and manage your account right from your smartphone.
Moscow becomes much easier to navigate when you have the right tools at your fingertips. Save this guide and download the apps you need in advance — it will make your first days in a new country much more comfortable and stress-free.

📍 The MGIMO Volunteer Centre is an organization that brings together students who are eager to take part in organizing and running significant international events both in Russia and abroad.
The Center was founded in 2014 as a legacy of the XXII Olympic and XI Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi. Since then, MGIMO volunteers have become an integral part of major forums, summits, and festivals.
The volunteer team operates across several key areas:

🔵 Liaison Services — accompanying delegations and assisting guests;

| 17 |  🇩🇿 As part of our #successstory series, we spoke with Arezki Bencheikh — a student from Algeria who has successfully completed the Preparatory Courses in Russian Language for International Citizens and will soon become a 1st-year student at the MGIMO School of International Relations.
Arezki shared why he chose Russia for his education, what his journey to admission looked like, and what he learned during his time at the Preparatory Faculty.
📚One of the key factors influencing his choice of Russia was the country's historical legacy in education and diplomacy:
I chose to study in Russia because it has long been renowned for its high standard of education dating back to the Soviet era, particularly in the field of diplomacy. Furthermore, having grown up reading the works of Marx, Lenin, Tolstoy, and Bulgakov, coming to Russia felt like a natural choice.
📨What turned out to be the most challenging part of studying at the MGIMO Preparatory Faculty?
The biggest challenge for me was the level of dedication and hard work required to master the Russian language. It's serious work, but it is absolutely worth it.
🔖What advice would you give to students from Algeria and other countries who are still choosing a university?
I strongly encourage prospective students, whether from Algeria or any other country, to take a closer look at MGIMO — and take their chance to join the future diplomatic elite. MGIMO offers a wide range of academic and extracurricular opportunities; there truly is something for everyone.

Recently, we debunked some of the most common myths about MGIMO. Now, let's take a broader look at the misconceptions surrounding higher education in Russia. Every year, Russia attracts more and more international students. Along with this growing interest, however, come persistent stereotypes: it's always cold, it's expensive, it's unsafe. So, what's myth and what's reality? Let's find out.
🇷🇺Myth 1. There's nothing to do in Russia besides studying.
✅ Reality: Student life is about much more than lectures and exams. Sports competitions, festivals, volunteer projects, academic conferences, language clubs, creative societies — there is something for everyone. Universities also organize excursions and trips, giving international students the opportunity to discover not only Moscow and St. Petersburg, but also Kazan, Sochi, Kaliningrad, Lake Baikal, and many other fascinating destinations across Russia.
🇷🇺 Myth 2. Russia is not a safe place for international students.
✅ Reality: For thousands of international students, Russia has become a place where they not only earn a degree but also enjoy a vibrant student life. They study, explore the city, meet friends, travel, and participate in university events. As in any other country, following basic safety precautions is usually all that's needed.
🇷🇺 Myth 3. Studying and living in Russia is too expensive.
✅ Reality: Compared to many popular study-abroad destinations, the cost of living in Russia remains affordable. Student dormitories, discounted public transportation, reduced admission to museums and cultural venues, as well as relatively low everyday expenses help make studying in Russia more accessible.
🇷🇺 Myth 4. It's cold in Russia all year round.
✅ Reality: Russia is the largest country in the world, which means it has a wide variety of climates. While winters can be cold in some regions, spring, summer, and autumn are warm and pleasant. Modern campuses, dormitories, and academic buildings are also well equipped to provide comfort throughout the year.
🇷🇺 Myth 5. A Russian degree is not valued internationally.
✅ Reality: Graduates of Russian universities continue their studies and build successful careers around the world. Many universities cooperate with international partners, offer academic mobility opportunities and joint degree programs, while their alumni work in multinational companies, research institutions, and international organizations.
🇷🇺 Studying in Russia is an opportunity to experience a new culture, make friends from around the world, gain valuable international experience, and discover a country that has far more to offer than the stereotypes suggest.

| 19 |  +7🌐 As part of our #MGIMOinside series spotlighting student organizations, today we’re introducing you to the MGIMO International Youth Forum “Russia–Africa: What’s Next?”.
🌐 The “Russia–Africa: What’s Next?” Forum is a permanent discussion platform based at MGIMO and supported by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It brings together political leaders, diplomats, scholars, and students from Russia and across Africa to discuss key issues of bilateral cooperation and build a constructive intercontinental dialogue.
The idea for the Forum emerged in 2019, the year of the inaugural Russia–Africa Summit. The first student forum was held in the autumn of 2021, and since then it has become an annual event, attracting a growing number of participants each year. In 2025, the Forum brought together more than 1,500 participants from countries around the world.
You can find out how a student initiative evolved into a key platform for Russia–Africa youth cooperation in an interview with the Forum’s founder and MGIMO graduate, Igor Tkachenko.
As part of the Forum’s activities, students:
