🇷🇺🇨🇳🇰🇿On March 23, a screening of the film “The Composer” took place in the MGIMO Conference Hall.
⭐Diplomats, representatives of embassies, business, and the cultural and creative community gathered in the University’s Conference Hall. Among the distinguished guests were MGIMO Rector, RAS Academician Anatoly Torkunov, Minister Plenipotentiary of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China Zhang Wei, First Secretary for Education of the Chinese Embassy Jiao Dan’, and the film’s producer Shen Jian.
📼“The Composer” is a joint project of Russia, China, and Kazakhstan посвящённый historical memory, cultural ties, and dialogue between the countries.
At the center of the plot is the Chinese composer Xian Xinghai, who lived and worked in Alma-Ata during World War II, creating musical works that later became classics in China.📒The date of the screening was not chosen by chance — it was on March 23, 2013, that Xi Jinping, during his first foreign visit to Russia, visited MGIMO.
At that time, the future of Russia–China relations was discussed at the University, and
the concept of a “community of shared future for mankind” was first introduced.🎵 Setting the musical tone for the evening, the melodic “Moscow Nights” was performed in Russian and Chinese at the beginning of the event. Such events are not only about art, but also about “soft power” — about how the language of cinema and music helps countries better understand each other and build trust. ❤️ 🌐MGIMO International (ENG) / МГИМО для иностранцев (RUS)

Prime Cabinet secretary of Kenya Delivers Speech at MGIMO 🇷🇺🇰🇪
On March 17, MGIMO University hosted a lecture by Musalia Mudavadi, Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs of the Republic of Kenya. He arrived in Russia the day prior on a working visit and held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Today, accompanied by a representative delegation of African countries, including Their Excellencies the Ambassadors of Burundi, Uganda, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Gambia, Senegal, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Kenya, he visited MGIMO. The delegation was welcomed by Anatoly Torkunov, Rector of MGIMO University, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
👉 What did Kenya's Prime Cabinet Secretary discuss with MGIMO students? Here are the key takeaways.
"Moscow and Nairobi are thousands of kilometers apart, but diplomacy erases distances," — M. MudavadiOn cooperation between Kenya and Russia ✔The partnership between Kenya and Russia has a long history, Kenya's Foreign Minister emphasized, and we intend to consistently develop it. We are united by key principles: mutual support, an independent political course, pragmatism, and reliance on national interests. ✔Russia, with its' strong diplomatic school and significant weight in the international arena, plays an important role in maintaining peace, combating terrorism, and addressing cross-border threats. Today, the international community faces serious challenges, and our countries understand that a sustainable multipolar world is the foundation of global and national security. ✔According to M. Mudavadi, trade and economic ties between Russia and Kenya are already developing, but their potential is much broader. Kenya invites Russian investors to cooperate in renewable energy, nuclear energy, and the technology sector. ✔M. Mudavadi stressed that the Russia-Africa Forum remains an important platform for dialogue on regional and global issues. ✔Humanitarian and educational ties are particularly significant: many Kenyan students have already received their education in Russia, and this area continues to grow. Education is one of the key pillars of bilateral cooperation. On cooperation between Kenya and MGIMO ✔According to M. Mudavadi, MGIMO is a recognized global center for training international elites and a reputable analytical thinktank. The University opens broad educational opportunities for Kenyan students, helping to shape a new generation of specialists.
"We desire to further
develop academic exchanges
, as well as
support the study of Swahili
— one of the languages taught at MGIMO," stated the head of Kenya's Foreign Ministry. In conclusion, the Kenyan Foreign Minister noted that Russia and Kenya share strong historical ties, mutual interest, and experience in cooperation. The task now is to transfer this potential into concrete results that will benefit the peoples of both countries. After the speech, MGIMO students asked the Minister questions on a wide range of topics: from the Russia-Africa Forum and the role of women in Kenyan politics to student exchanges and sports diplomacy. Many students asked their questions in M. Mudavadi's native language, Swahili, which is taught at MGIMO alongside 55 other languages. The dialogue was substantive, open, and genuinely engaging. We thank the Kenyan delegation and the MGIMO administration for providing students with the opportunity to communicate directly with world leaders today! International Applicants Club × School of Governance and Politics
🩶🩶On March 10, as part of the series of meetings with schools MGIMO International Applicants Club held an introduction to the School of Governance and Politics (SGP). Timur Zaran, Secretary of the School’s Admissions Committee told the Club members about the life of the School and what makes it special.
SGP is one of the largest schools at MGIMO with over 30 years of history, shaping a new generation of leaders.
As noted by Henry Sardaryan, Dean of the School, SGP trains the future political elite — specialists capable of achieving goals in the digital economy using modern models of project management, political technologies, and international experience.➡ A particular point of pride for SGP is its strong student community. Teamwork, mutual support, and shared goals are highly valued here. This is facilitated by the high standards of discipline maintained by the students — from appearance to professional conduct. 👔However, the meeting was valuable not only for the information about the School. It took the form of an open dialogue: Timur, himself a young SGP graduate, shared his personal experience of admission and studies and answered questions from future students. The meeting was sincere, warm, and, by the students' own admission, motivating! We thank the School of Governance and Politics for their cooperation and eagerly look forward to new joint events! 8️⃣In celebration of International Women's Day on March 8th, MGIMO hosted a series of events dedicated to women in diplomacy:

✔At the round table "Women in Regional Studies: Traditions in Academic Schools," faculty and students honored the memory and contributions of outstanding women scholars whose names are inscribed in the history of MGIMO's academic schools.
✔A lecture and quiz, "The Image of a Young Woman in Russian Literature," provided a wonderful opportunity to discuss the multifaceted nature of women's images and roles.
✔Students were also able to honor the memory of all the women who defended the Motherland during the Second World War in the lecture "The Everyday Life of Women during the Great Patriotic War."
✔The academic events concluded with a quiz game, "Women and Discoveries," which reminded us that behind many great geographical and scientific achievements lie female courage and curiosity.

Maria Zakharova at MGIMO: role of women in diplomacy, professionalism, and femininity
🤩 On March 4, ahead of International Women's Day, Maria Zakharova, Spokeswoman for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and MGIMO graduate spoke at University. Here are the key points from the meeting.
👔Quoting Immanuel Kant, Maria Zakharova reminded the audience: "A woman possesses an innate inclination towards a sense of beauty, which brings morality, gentleness, and order to society." The participation of women in public and state life can strengthen the humanitarian and moral dimension of politics.
➡️ She emphasized that one should not judge the role of women in diplomacy solely by their official position and formal status. Significant influence has been and continues to be exerted by female politicians, journalists, spouses of diplomats and world leaders, and public figures. Fulfillment is also possible through international women's platforms and associations, including:
⚪The Eurasian Women's Forum
⚪The Women's Twenty (W20)
⚪UN Women
⚪The BRICS Women's Business Alliance
Furthermore, according to Zakharova, Russian women abroad represent a powerful social force; since 2022, they have been actively advocating for the protection of the Russian language and culture.👍The spokeswoman specifically noted that for women in Russia, the path into the profession is built not through quotas, but through professionalism. Women come to the Foreign Ministry thanks to their competence and knowledge.
Today, the staffing within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs system is close to parity — the ratio of men to women is approximately
50 to 50
. In leadership positions, the share of women reaches about
20%
.▶️Concluding the lecture, Maria Zakharova addressed the female students with a parting message: "Bet on professionalism, don't give up your femininity, and stay true to yourselves!" At MGIMO, such meetings are part of the educational process. Here, you can truly learn from practitioners, ask questions to top officials, and find your place in the profession! 🌐 MGIMO International (ENG) / МГИМО для иностранцев (RUS)

🧩 Why Is the Global Economy Like a Giant Puzzle?
Members of the MGIMO International Applicants Club found answers to this and other questions about international economic cooperation on March 2 at a lecture by Anastasia Makarenko titled "The Economic Puzzle: Why Do Countries Benefit from Economic and Trade Cooperation?"
Sounds interesting? We're sharing the key takeaways.
▪️Trade and Cooperation: What's the Fundamental Difference?
⚪Contrary to popular belief, trade is not an invention of the internet age or globalization. For millennia, it has connected civilizations.
Trade is not limited to the movement of goods; it is a channel for the exchange of ideas, experiences, knowledge, technology, and culture.⚪Cooperation involves a deeper level of interaction that goes beyond trade and includes joint projects, agreements, and much more. ▪️The Economics of Cooperation: Why Is It Beneficial for Countries to Join Forces? For states, as pieces of a global puzzle, cooperation provides tangible advantages: ⚪Access to unique resources. The ability to obtain what is impossible or too costly to produce domestically. ⚪Efficiency and specialization. Based on the principle of comparative advantage, countries focus on what they do best, maximizing global productivity. ⚪Consumer welfare. An expanded choice of goods and services and, as a result, lower prices. ⚪Global stability. Interdependence often acts as a guarantor of peace. ▪️Global Supply Chains: Double-Edged Sword ⚪On one hand, we see the diversification of production on a global scale, job creation worldwide, affordable goods, and accelerated innovation. ⚪But on the other hand, global chains often involve appalling working conditions in factories, environmental damage, and the risk of vulnerability due to reliance on a single major supplier. ➡️ Consequently, economic cooperation is not just about money and efficiency, but also about choice, quality of life, ethics, ecology, and global stability.
A Look into the Future:
The digital revolution will not kill trade, but it will radically change its form. We are moving towards an era of "smart trade."Concluding the lecture, Anastasia Makarenko shared advice with future international relations specialists, urging them to: ✔Think about their future careers; ✔Think about the choices we make as a society; ✔See the world as a coherent picture, and themselves as an active element of this puzzle. We thank Anastasia Makarenko for such a productive discussion and are already preparing new events for the International Applicants Club! 🌐 MGIMO International (ENG) / МГИМО для иностранцев (RUS)
