| 2 | The school also welcomed displaced children from Al Fasher and Tawila. During the day, around 1,200 students attended classes. At night, the classrooms became sleeping spaces for families who had lost their homes.
For Mohamed, the school was more than a classroom. After everything he had been through, it was one of the few places where he could begin to feel safe again.
Through lessons, play and psychosocial support, teachers helped children affected by the conflict gradually adjust to life again. Students also reached out to their displaced classmates, helping them feel that they still belonged to a community.
❤️ Eventually, he found his family again.
After a long search, Mohamed's older brother finally found him and took him to Tawila.
But before leaving, Mohamed completed his entire second-grade school year at Al Zahra Primary School.
For a 9-year-old who had experienced war, lost his father and been displaced on his own, simply being able to continue sitting in a classroom and learning was already a chance to reclaim a piece of a normal childhood.
🤝 UNICEF is helping children like Mohamed continue their education.
With UNICEF's support, the school has been able to continue operating during the crisis, including through teacher support and training, learning supplies, teaching materials, and resources for early childhood development and recreational activities.
This support does more than keep children in school. It gives children affected by conflict and displacement a place where they can learn, play and feel that they still belong.

💔 His father was killed in the war. He arrived at school alone.
In July 2023, intense fighting erupted in Al Fasher, Sudan. Many families were forced to flee their homes, while children walked long distances in search of safety.
Nine-year-old Mohamed Adam was one of them.
When he arrived at Al Zahra Primary School, he was barefoot and had no family member with him. His father had been killed in the fighting in Al Fasher.
During the morning assembly, while the other children stood together, Mohamed would often stay close to the male teachers at the school — because being around them reminded him of his father.

| 5 | ⚽️ Football has become a place where children can briefly escape the war.
Dima and his friends spend several hours playing here each day.
They know that the area is not truly safe, but on the field, they can temporarily forget about the war.
When the shelling becomes more intense, Dima's grandmother comes to the field to take the children home.
She says that without the war, Dima's life could have been completely different. He might already have been on his way to becoming a professional football player.
Yet Dima still smiles and says:
“We came yesterday, we came today, and we'll come tomorrow.”
🛡 UNICEF is helping children stay safe during the war
In eastern Ukraine, UNICEF and its partners provide mine and explosive ordnance risk education to help children stay safe, while also providing psychosocial support.
UNICEF also helps repair damaged schools and kindergartens and provides learning materials, furniture and sports equipment, helping children continue their education and maintain a sense of normality as much as possible.
For Dima, the war has already changed his plans for the future.
But whenever he steps onto the football field, he can still run like any other 14-year-old boy.

🧠 For Ali, protection means more than simply taking him off the streets
UNICEF is providing children affected by conflict with case management, psychosocial support, health services, legal assistance, birth registration and family reunification services.
UNICEF reports that the recruitment and use of children by armed groups in Haiti is rapidly worsening. In 2025, the estimated number of children recruited or used by armed groups increased by approximately 200 per cent.
Ali has already lost his mother.
He has also lost the safety of a home.
But he is still talking about his future.
He says he wants to become a pilot.
After everything a 15-year-old child has experienced, he is still imagining a future for himself—and that hope is worth protecting.

UNICEF supports local schools with learning supplies, teacher training and programmes that help children who have missed school catch up with their studies, allowing children like Ridda to continue their education as much as possible.

Ridda has already experienced leaving her home, repeated displacement and seeing her younger sister injured.

Ridda once lived in Eastern Ghouta, Syria.
But the war repeatedly forced her and her family to change their lives.
She first left her hometown for northern Syria and later moved to Idlib in the south. Within just a few months, she, her parents and her 7-year-old sister experienced multiple displacements.
💔 What she fears most is that the fighting will start again
While fleeing Eastern Ghouta, Ridda’s younger sister was struck in the neck by shrapnel.
The experience left the 12-year-old girl deeply afraid of war and fighting.
She does not know where she and her family would go if fighting broke out again in Idlib.
For her, “home” no longer means a place where she can stay forever.

🛟 UNICEF helped him return to his family
In March 2025, following dialogue efforts led by UNICEF and the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), Ahmat was finally released.
A total of 20 children, including Ahmat, were released.
Before returning home, UNICEF and its partners arranged foster care for some of the children while searching for their biological parents. For children with more complex circumstances, family tracing can sometimes take up to nine months.
When Ahmat finally saw his mother and siblings again, they all cried.
His family had feared that they might never see him again.
🧵 Now, he is trying to start over
After returning to his family, Ahmat received medical care and psychosocial support.
To help him regain the skills needed to live independently, he also took part in vocational training.
He chose to learn tailoring. After six months of training, he learned how to cut fabric, operate a sewing machine and repair his own machine.
After completing the training, he received a sewing machine of his own.
But his dreams do not end there.
He also hopes to return to school and improve his reading and writing skills.
He says he hopes to become a civil servant in the Central African Republic one day, so that he can do something meaningful for his country.
At just 10 years old, he was forced to leave his parents and endure more than a year of experiences no child should ever have to face.
Now, he is finally home.
But true recovery takes more than returning home. It also requires continued psychosocial support, education and opportunities to rebuild his life within his community.

One day during the 2024 dry season, 10-year-old Ahmat was herding his family’s cattle near his village.
Suddenly, a group of armed men emerged from the forest and forcibly took him away.
He did not even have time to say goodbye to his parents.
In the days that followed, he was forced to move with the armed group from one village to another, witnessing killings, looting and homes being burned. Eventually, he was taken to a remote hideout in the forest.

Ahmat lived there for more than a year.
He was made to clean, fetch water and perform various other chores.

🧠 Children Need More Than Food and Shelter
The psychological impact of war does not disappear simply because a child has moved away from a place where bombardment is taking place.
UNICEF reports that children in Gaza have experienced varying degrees of violence, the loss of family members and friends, the loss of homes and schools, and prolonged insecurity.
That is why UNICEF and its partners are providing mental health and psychosocial support through play-based activities, counselling and group support.
These services currently reach more than 30,000 children in Gaza every month.
Naseem is not asking for anything extravagant.
She simply hopes to return to the home where flowers once filled the garden.
Until she can go home, she is learning how to face the painful memories of war that remain with her.
An 11-year-old child should remember the flowers in her home—not the sound of bombs.

One exercise she particularly liked was called “imaginary change.”

| 20 | Rana eventually joined a UNICEF-supported child-friendly centre.
There, she received accelerated learning classes to help make up for more than two years of missed education, along with psychosocial support. Staff also helped her family obtain civil documentation, allowing the children to regain access to education and other essential services.
When Rana first arrived at the centre, she worried that she would not make any friends.
But little by little, she began learning again, making friends and smiling again.
She used to draw tanks and explosions.
Now, she draws peace.
She said:
“I come here because I laugh here, and I learn here.”
