I am Dakat, your Program Coordinator for Communicable Diseases for the term 2023/24. This year, we will be kicking off with a wonderful campaign on Antimicrobial Resistance! The World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW) is a global campaign to raise awareness and understanding of AMR and promote best practices among One Health stakeholders to reduce the emergence and spread of drug-resistant infections. It is celebrated from 18-24 November every year. “Preventing Antimicrobial Resistance Together” remains the theme of the 2023 WHO campaign on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). AMR has been recognized as a major public health threat in recent years. The resistance of microorganisms to antibiotics occurs as a natural procedure due to mutations, however, the overuse and misuse of antibiotics has led to an extreme amount of infections that can no longer receive treatment and antibiotics that are no longer useful. As a result, treatable diseases remain untreated which leads to longer hospital stays, more costs, serious implications for the patients, or even death. Through this campaign, we intend to provide you with the resources, skills, and inspiration needed to effectively plan, coordinate, and enroll your activities in commemoration of World AMR Awareness Week! Why should you act? AMR is estimated to cause 700,000 deaths worldwide each year. Up to 9.5 million individuals might die each year if current resistance rates rise by 40%. Hospitals spend on average an additional USD 10,000 to 40,000 to treat a patient infected by resistant bacteria. By 2030, antimicrobial resistance could force up to 24 million people into extreme poverty. Comprehensive data on the global impact of AMR can be found here. This email will inform you about all the procedures to apply to be a member of the delegation, so please read carefully till the end! What is the Global Forum on Migration & Development 2024? The Global Forum on Migration & Development 2024 is a high-level international event that brings together stakeholders worldwide to discuss critical issues related to migration and development. The meeting will address various topics, involve representatives from governments, civil society, and international organizations, and provide a platform for meaningful discussions and collaboration. However, in light of a number of positions still vacant, we would like to officially open the 4th Call for International Assistants, Program Coordinators, and the Code of Conduct Committee for the term 2023/2024! Through the appointment of  International Teams and Program Coordinators, our Federation will be delivered of a new generation of young changemakers, passionate global health advocates, and, crucially, assistants that enable the smooth administration of our operations. Under this project, the African Women Leaders Network (AWLN) was launched in June 2017 in New York. What is African Women Leaders Network? What are the aims of the African Women Leaders Network? The AWLN seeks to enhance the leadership of African women in the transformation of the continent, in line with the Africa Agenda 2063 and the Global Sustainable Development Agenda 2030. AWLN serves as a continental platform to galvanize women’s leadership towards lasting peace and sustainable development, the promotion of gender equality, and women’s empowerment in all sectors and at all levels, building on, and working with, existing women networks. AWLN also serves as a practical instrument to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) at the regional level. The network looks to increase women’s participation in decision-making through peer learning and mentoring, enhanced solidarity, advocacy, and capacity-building, among other strategies. The meeting will gather stakeholders working in the field of gender equality and passionate SRHR advocates in IFMSA will have the opportunity to shape action plans towards this goal as a part of our delegation. Details on the meeting The meeting will happen from the 11th to 22nd of March 2024 in the UN headquarters in New York, USA. The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. The CSW is instrumental in promoting women’s rights, documenting the reality of women’s lives throughout the world, and shaping global standards on gender equality and the empowerment of women. During the Commission’s session, representatives of UN Member States, civil society organizations and UN entities discuss progress and gaps in the implementation of the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the key global policy document on gender equality. Member States agree on further actions to accelerate progress and promote women’s enjoyment of their rights in political, economic, and social fields.  The priority theme of the meeting is Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective, meaning the Commission and Member States will propose action plans on this topic. The review theme this year, which aims to evaluate efforts done on the particular issue, will be Social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. Objectives of the IFMSA participation in the meeting 1 Deliver statements (oral statements and interventions from the floor) to outline the IFMSA position on the issues intersecting with the theme. 2 Develop and facilitate side and parallel events on the issues under the theme of the meeting. 3 Network with external partners relevant to the IFMSA work and connect with own member states 4 Generating social media plans to ensure visibility during the meeting 5 Create advocacy plans, policy briefs and other advocacy-related publications in advocacy streams. 6 Participate in, contribute to and facilitate capacity-building sessions for the IFMSA delegation. 7 Support the LRA in developing logistical aspects of the meeting (finding accommodation, planning social activities, etc) 8 Represent the voice of 1.3 million medical students worldwide on gender equality and gender empowerment.  Other tasks of the delegation: participate in reflection sessions, develop advocacy plans, attend plenary sessions and side events of other partners.   Selection criteria All applications will be evaluated based on the following: • Only students, or those who have the student status within 6 months prior to the meeting, are eligible to apply; • Only IFMSA members from active NMOs are eligible to apply; • Experience in the topic of the meeting - state your experience that you believe are most relevant to the theme(s).

The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) is the first international treaty negotiated under the auspices of WHO. It was adopted by the World Health Assembly on 21 May 2003 and entered into force on 27 February 2005, with aims to reduce the demand and supply of tobacco products to improve public health. The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the governing body of the FCTC, responsible for regularly reviewing the implementation of the convention and making decisions to enhance its effectiveness. The COP meetings provide a platform for parties to the FCTC to discuss and negotiate matters related to the implementation of the convention. These meetings play a crucial role in shaping global tobacco control policies and initiatives. COP meetings are typically held once in two years, and decisions made during these meetings have a significant impact on global efforts to reduce tobacco consumption and its related health risks. The meeting will gather stakeholders working in the field of Tobacco Control and passionate public health advocates in IFMSA will have the opportunity to shape action plans towards this goal as a part of our delegation. The CSW is instrumental in promoting women’s rights, documenting the reality of women’s lives throughout the world, and shaping global standards on gender equality and the empowerment of women.  What’s Advocacy in Practice Training? (From the organizer) The Advocacy in Practice Training seeks to provide participants with a solid foundational knowledge of advocacy engagement at the UN through interactive sessions that address the CSW and other key UN spaces, advocacy tools and strategies, priority setting, language advocacy and coalition engagement. It culminates with putting the training into practice through engagement at the CSW. The Advocacy in Practice Training will consist of 5 sessions and will be 3 hours each. The sessions build on one another and it is important that all applicants can commit to attending all sessions, as well as commit to engaging the CSW. The sessions will be facilitated by UN Women, Fòs Feminista Global Advocacy Unit staff, former participants and other feminists engaged in the CSW. The 4HERPOWER Challenge seeks out proposals that aims to address the lack of access to SRHR services and accurate information, the contural norms that prevent individuals from discussing SRHR issues freely and having their bodily autonomy over their sexual and reproductive decision, the unequitable health outcomes between different demographics which are further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemics, and more. What’s the goal of the Challenge? The challenge aims to address the unmet needs for complete physical, mental, and social well-being in all matters related to the reproductive system. It encourages solutions that are created by young people and for young people. How do I participate? Issues such as meaningful youth participation, strategies for health and well-being, the climate crisis, sexual and reproductive rights, and bodily autonomy will be discussed.

Application Form: here ------------------------------------------------------------------ Dear NMOs,  On this, the last day of my term I am happy to have the opportunity to open the call for the Small Working Group on Membership Reform as per the Membership Reform Mandate adopted during AM23. As you may recall, the mandate and as such this SWG has the aim of coming up with proposals for altering the membership system so as to address the current inconsistencies within it, as well as address the issue of non-UN recognised territories' membership within IFMSA, so as to develop a fairer system for all IFMSA members and without altering the current rights or voting rights of any NMO within IFMSA.  This SWG will be coordinated by Angelo Moreno, your IFMSA VPM 23/24, and his Membership Development Assistant. As such, the concept note, timeline and objectives were written jointly by both of us with the insights of the MDA 22/23. Please refer to it for a detailed plan of the SWG's work in the coming 11 months, and feel free to reach out to your VPM and MDA 23/24 with any questions you may have.  The proposed composition of the SWG, as slightly modified from the mandate is as follows:  • At least 2 members from associate NMOs • At least 2 members from NMOs that fall by bylaws paragraph 2.8 2.8.  The above paragraph applies to all members except: • Existing members who did not fall under it at its adoption (i.e. the Taiwanese NMO). • Medical students organization that received a standing invitation to participate as a member. Extending a standing invitation is decided by the General Assembly with a two-thirds majority • At least 2 members from NMO that do not fall into those categories.
