Finely carved head of Medusa, approximately 20mm x 26mm, oiled fissures, in hexagonal mount set with old cut diamonds, with graduated cushion cut diamonds to the bale, overall 50mm x 30mm.
Emeralds are notoriously brittle and extremely difficult to carve, which is why this particular pendant is so rare.
There is a carved emerald cameo with the head of Medusa in the British Museum and another was sold by Sotheby's Geneva, Lot 303, Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels 2018.
In jewellery, the head of Medusa has long been worn as an amulet to ward off evil.
