Laughing in a gathering of remembrance.”

| 7 | Shiqīq al-Balkhī (رحمه الله) said:
«ثَلَاثَةٌ مِنَ النَّوْمِ يُبْغِضُهَا اللهُ تَعَالَى:
١- النَّوْمُ بَعْدَ صَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ وَقَبْلَ صَلَاةِ الْعَتَمَةِ،
٢- وَالنَّوْمُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ،
٣- وَالنَّوْمُ عِنْدَ مَجْلِسِ الذِّكْرِ»
“Three types of sleep are hated by Allah, The Almighty:
Sleeping after Fajr and before the ‘Ishā’ prayer.
Sleeping during the prayer.
Sleeping while attending a gathering of remembrance.”

«فَلَوْ كَانَ كُلُّ بِدْعَةٍ يُمِيتُهَا اللَّهُ عَلَى يَدَيَّ، وَكُلُّ سُنَّةٍ يُنْعِشُهَا اللَّهُ عَلَى يَدَيَّ، بِبِضْعَةٍ مِنْ لَحْمِي، حَتَّى يَأْتِيَ آخِرُ ذَلِكَ عَلَى نَفْسِي، كَانَ فِي اللَّهِ يَسِيرًا»
“If every innovation that Allah caused to die at my hands, and every Sunnah that Allah revived through me, came at the cost of a piece of my flesh until it ultimately claimed my very life, then that would be a small sacrifice for the sake of Allah.”

«يَا تُبَيْعُ، أَخْبِرْنَا عَنِ الْخَيْرَاتِ الثَّلَاثِ؟»
“O Tubayʿ, tell us about the three good things.”
He replied:
«اللِّسَانُ الصَّدُوقُ، وَقَلْبٌ تَقِيٌّ، وَامْرَأَةٌ صَالِحَةٌ»
“A truthful tongue, a God-fearing heart, and a righteous wife.”

“We all dislike the pain of wounds, but we surpass one another through patience. By Allah, this is a quality that people are unable to attain except by the grace of Allah.”

“If you see a person of desires living an ascetic life and striving in worship, then beware of him and do not listen to his speech, for I do not feel safe that you may come to admire his way and perish along with him.”

«رَحِمَ اللَّهُ عَبْدًا قَالَ لِنَفْسِهِ: أَلَسْتِ صَاحِبَةَ كَذَا؟ أَلَسْتِ صَاحِبَةَ كَذَا؟ ثُمَّ ذَمَّهَا، ثُمَّ خَطَمَهَا، ثُمَّ أَلْزَمَهَا كِتَابَ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى، فَكَانَ لَهَا قَائِدًا»
“May Allah have mercy on a servant who says to his own soul:
‘Are you not the one who did such-and-such?
Are you not the one who did such-and-such?’
Then he rebukes it, restrains it, and binds it to the Book of Allah, the Exalted, making it its guide.”
