«اخْتِلَافُ النَّاسِ كُلِّهِمْ يَرْجِعُ إِلَى ثَلَاثَةِ أُصُولٍ، فَلِكُلِّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهَا ضِدٌّ، فَمَنْ سَقَطَ عَنْهُ وَقَعَ فِي ضِدِّهِ: التَّوْحِيدُ وَضِدُّهُ الشِّرْكُ، وَالسُّنَّةُ وَضِدُّهَا الْبِدْعَةُ، وَالطَّاعَةُ وَضِدُّهَا الْمَعْصِيَةُ»
“All differences among people return to three foundations. Each of them has an opposite, and whoever falls away from it will fall into its opposite:
Tawḥīd, whose opposite is shirk.
The Sunnah, whose opposite is bidʿah.
Obedience, whose opposite is disobedience.”

| 3 | Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq (رضي الله عنه) said:
«إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ الْكَبَائِرَ فَلَا تَيْأَسُوا، وَيُعَذِّبُ عَلَى الصَّغَائِرِ فَلَا تَغْتَرُّوا»
“Indeed, Allah forgives major sins, so do not despair; and He punishes for minor sins, so do not become complacent.”

| 4 | Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنهما) was asked:
«رجلٌ قليلُ العملِ قليلُ الذنوبِ أعجبُ إليك، أم رجلٌ كثيرُ العملِ كثيرُ الذنوبِ؟»
“Which is more beloved to you: a man whose deeds are few and whose sins are few, or a man whose deeds are many and whose sins are many?”
He replied:
«لا أعدلُ بالسَّلامةِ شيئًا»
“I do not equate anything with safety [from sin].”

| 5 | Bakr ibn ʿAbdillāh al-Muzanī (رحمه الله) used to say in his supplication:
اللَّهُمَّ ارْزُقْنَا مِنْ فَضْلِكَ رِزْقًا تُزِيدُنَا بِهِ لَكَ شُكْرًا، وَإِلَيْكَ فَاقَةً وَفَقْرًا، وَبِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ غِنًى وَتَعَفُّفًا.
“O Allah, grant us from Your bounty a provision that increases us in gratitude to You, in need and poverty before You, and through You, richness and independence from all besides You.”

“Shaytān comes to the bed of one of you after his family has prepared and arranged it for him. He then places a stick, a stone, or something similar upon it in order to anger him against his family. So when he finds it, he should not become angry with his family, for it is from the work of Shaytān.”

إِذَا كُنْتَ فِي زَمَانٍ يُرْضَى فِيهِ بِالْقَوْلِ دُونَ الْفِعْلِ، وَالْعِلْمِ دُونَ الْعَمَلِ، فَاعْلَمْ بِأَنَّكَ فِي شَرِّ زَمَانٍ بَيْنَ شَرِّ النَّاسِ.
“If you live in a time in which people are content with speech without action, and with knowledge without implementation, then know that you are in the worst of times among the worst of people.”

لَوْ عَلِمَ اللَّهُ شَيْئًا مِنَ الْعُقُوقِ أَدْنَى مِنْ أُفٍّ لَحَرَّمَهُ
“Had Allah known of any form of undutifulness to one’s parents lesser than saying ‘uff’, He would have prohibited it.”

أَلاَ رُبَّ مُبَيِّضٍ لِثِيَابِهِ ، مُدَنِّسٍ لِدِيْنِهِ! أَلاَ رُبَّ مُكْرِمٍ لِنَفْسِهِ وَهُوَ لَهَا مُهِيْنٌ! بَادِرُوا السَّيِّئَاتِ القَدِيْمَاتِ بِالحَسَنَاتِ الحَدِيْثَاتِ.
“How many a person whitens his clothes while soiling his religion! How many a person honours himself while in reality humiliating it! Hasten to erase old sins with new good deeds.”

| 14 | Al-Awzāʿī (رحمه الله) said:
كان هذا العلم كريما يتلقاه الرجال بينهم، فلما دخل في الكتب دخل فيه غير أهله
“Knowledge was once noble. Men would receive it directly from one another. But when it entered the books, those who were not qualified for it also entered into it.”

| 16 | Al-Hasan al-Basri (رحمه الله) said:
لَنْ يَزَالَ لِلَّهِ نُصَحَاءُ فِي الْأَرْضِ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ يَعْرِضُونَ أَعْمَالَ الْعِبَادَ عَلَى كِتَابِ اللَّهِ فَإِذَا وَافَقُوهُ حَمِدُوا اللَّهَ ، وَإِذَا خَالَفُوهُ عَرَفُوا بِكِتَابِ اللَّهِ ضَلَالَةَ مَنْ ضَلَّ ، وَهُدَى مَنِ اهتدى ، فأولئك خلفاء الله.
“Allah will never cease to have sincere advisers among His servants upon the earth. They present the deeds of the people before the Book of Allah. If those deeds conform to it, they praise Allah. If they contradict it, they recognise through the Book of Allah the misguidance of the one who has gone astray and the guidance of the one who is rightly guided. Such people are the vicegerents of Allah.”

| 18 | ʿUmar ibn al-Khattāb (رضي الله عنه) said:
تَلَقَّوُا الحَاجَّ وَالعُمَّارَ وَالغُزَاةَ فَلْيَدْعُوا لَكُمْ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَتَدَنَّسُوا
“Meet the pilgrims of Hajj, the pilgrims of ʿUmrah, and those returning from military expeditions, and ask them to supplicate for you before they become affected by the impurities [of sins].”

ينبغي للعبد في هذا الزمان أن يستدين ويتزوج؛ لئلا ينظر إلى ما لا يحل له فيحبط عمله
“During this time, it is incumbent for a servant to borrow money and get married, lest he look at that which is impermissible for him and thereby ruin his deeds.”

| 20 | Shāfiʿī (رحمه الله) said:
الناس متعبدون بأن يقولوا ويفعلوا ما أمروا به، وينتهوا إليه، لا يجاوزونه، لأنهم لم يعطوا أنفسهم شيئًا، إنما هو عطاء الله، فنسأل الله عطاءً مؤديًا لحقه، موجبًا لمزيده.
“People are bound in worship to say and do what they have been commanded with, and to stop where they have been stopped, not going beyond that. For they have not granted themselves anything; rather, it is the giving of Allah. So we ask Allah for a gift that enables fulfilment of His right and brings about an increase from Him.”
