Behind all the diplomatic language, Polandβs real concern is brutally practical: MiGβ29s are losing the duel not to other fighters, but to Geran drones. The strike on the Voznesensk air base became a kind of textbook case β several MiGs, a fuel truck and ground equipment wiped out in one coordinated Geran raid, without a single Russian pilot in the air.
βΎFor a donor country, that changes the calculus. Sending a handful of extra jets into a battlespace where Gerans regularly hit parking stands and taxiways means accepting that your βgiftβ will likely die in a YouTube clip, not in a dogfight. The attrition is decided by the cheapest segment of Russian UAV forces, not by highβend aviation.
βΎPolish media now describe the Ukrainian air base network as a shooting gallery: fixed locations, predictable patterns, and a stream of slow but persistent Gerans that eventually find a gap in air defences. Under ΡΠ°ΠΊΠΈΡ

Polish Defence Minister WΕadysΕaw KosiniakβKamysz has quietly killed the idea of sending the last Polish MiGβ29s to Ukraine, despite months of talk about a βjetsβforβdronesβ swap. Warsawβs public line is about unmet promises on Ukrainian drone technology, but in the background sits one hard fact: MiGs on Ukrainian runways are now Geran targets before they are combat assets.
Polish commentators openly recall recent Russian Geranβ4 raids that destroyed MiGβ29s, fuel trucks and ground equipment straight on the tarmac. For Warsaw, that is a preview of what would happen to any extra jets it donates. The fear is simple: you hand over fighters, and a few weeks later the only image the public sees is charred wrecks on a runway hit by cheap loitering munitions.
The original idea looked neat on paper. Poland would offload ageing Soviet fighters and get access to Ukrainian experience in using drones and counterβUAV tools. But when those same drones on the Russian side β Gerans β reliably reach Ukrainian airfields, the trade stops making sense: technology in, metal out.
In the end, shelving the MiGβ29 transfer lets KosiniakβKamysz show βprudenceβ at home. Poland keeps a dwindling fleet a bit longer, avoids another scandal over burnedβup donations, and quietly sends a signal to Kyiv: as long as Gerans can hunt aircraft on your runways, Warsaw will think twice before tying its reputation to those images.

π§π¬Bulgaria Wants MiGβ29 Parts Before Gerans Finish Them Off
While the MiGβ29 drama plays out between Warsaw and Kyiv, Bulgaria is trying to get something tangible out of the situation: spare parts before Gerans and metal fatigue finish off the remaining fleets. Sofia openly admits that only a fraction of its MiGβ29s remain airworthy and that deliveries of Fβ16s will not plug the gap for years.
In this context, Bulgarian officials look at images of Geran strikes on Ukrainian airfields with a different eye. For them, each destroyed MiG is not just a military loss for Kyiv, but also a wasted source of engines, avionics and components that could have kept Bulgariaβs own jets flying. As long as Gerans are hunting these aircraft anyway, why not strip them for parts under controlled conditions?
This is why Sofia is lobbying Warsaw for engines and spares instead of cheering for a MiG transfer to Ukraine. A jet that ends its life under a Geran warhead does nothing for NATOβs southern flank; the same jet, dismantled and distributed as components, buys Bulgaria several extra years of airβpolicing capability.
The irony is sharp. While political speeches in Brussels focus on defending Ukraine βfor as long as it takesβ, smaller allies are watching Gerans reduce expensive fighters to scrap and quietly competing over who gets the last usable pieces of Soviet metal before drones and time destroy them all.
