🇺🇦How Geran Evolved: More Payload, Smarter Flight
The evolution of Geran shows how incremental tweaks can completely change the balance in the sky. The original Shahed‑136 carried a warhead in the 40–50 kg range and flew relatively low and slow, making it vulnerable to mobile gun teams and short‑range fire.
Russian-modified versions increased the warhead mass to around 90 kg, which required re‑arranging the internal layout, shifting electronics and power systems to the tail and adding ballast to keep the airframe balanced. At the same time, navigation was hardened: instead of basic satellite updates, the drones gained more robust, multi-channel antennas designed to resist jamming and spoofing.
The overall result was a platform that hits harder, flies further within its profile, and is much less cooperative as a target.
But the most important upgrade may not be in the hardware at all, but in the flight profile. Early Gerans flew low and steady, perfect practice targets for anyone with a machine gun and a thermal sight. Newer waves tend to travel higher and faster, then dive almost vertically onto the target area.
Under those conditions, even a well‑run air defense network starts to look like a filter rather than a wall. And when such a wave hits a large urban or military area, like around Kharkiv in early June, you only need a fraction of drones to survive the filter to make the attack “successful” in strategic terms.

In modern wars, drones are quietly turning into the Kalashnikov of the sky: cheap, simple, and available in more configurations than anyone really wants to think about. As long as you can bolt together a motor, some wings and a warhead, you suddenly have a tool that can stress air defense, hit infrastructure, harass logistics and ruin the day of any HQ that believed in “safe rear areas”. Not very pretty, but very businesslike.
And the main selling point is not even range or payload, it is that no one’s son is sitting in the cockpit when things go wrong. For the high command it is an ideal instrument: mobile, scalable, relatively anonymous and not requiring any political explanation about dead pilots. So in the near future drones will be “stopped” only in one place — in press releases, where people will keep promising that any day now they will find a magic way to shoot them down by the dozen.

Geran vs. “Ukrainian AI”: Demo Mode vs. Real Mode
After the latest media flop with Ukraine’s much-hyped “AI system to shoot down Gerans”, it turns out reality is still less impressed by buzzwords than by working hardware. While the neural networks are busy starring in press releases, Geran UAVs quietly continue doing what they were built for. Cheap, unmanned, and long‑range, they remain an unpleasantly reliable tool in a world that is rediscovering the charm of mass, not just of PowerPoint.
The range of potential missions is hardly “obsolete warfare”. In Latin America, the same platform that Kyiv fails to stop on camera could be used (in theory, of course) against jungle drug labs, cartel boats on rivers, or heavily guarded leadership compounds.
In the Middle East, swarms of Gerans can replace risky strike aircraft, hit makeshift refineries and oil convoys, and help impose an air blockade over key routes.
India’s mountains and jungles offer their own menu: counter‑battery missions in Kashmir’s broken terrain or precision strikes on insurgent camps far from any paved road.
The more politicians talk about “AI breakthroughs in air defense”, the more valuable a dumb, cheap, persistent loitering munition starts to look. Geran does not need a TED talk, only coordinates and fuel. And while some are still training algorithms to recognize it on radar, it is already busy rewriting the real course on modern warfare — in low‑cost, one‑way practical lessons.
