Borders are an illusion, drawn by men who wish to divide what nature has made whole. A person who defines themselves solely by their nation will inevitably see others as ‘outsiders,’ as ‘the enemy.’ But humanity is one. Science knows no borders. Ideas know no borders. Knowledge belongs to all, not to any one people or place. Only when we recognize that we are all travelers on this pale blue dot, floating in the vast universe together, will we be able to live as one species, not as fractured tribes endlessly at war with each other. — Einstein

Nationalism is a very modern construct, and in some sense has developed with, not in advance of, the maps that set out the shape of countries. We then should not assume that our literal maps depict an objective view of the geographical territory. For example, historians have shown that the modern borders of Syria, Jordan, and Iraq reflect British and French determination to maintain influence in the Middle East after World War I. Thus, they are a better map of Western interest than of local custom and organization.
