I accidentally exposed my mate Many years ago, when I was an 18 year old lad, life revolved around pubs, clubs, drinks and trying to chat up girls. There were five of us, and every Friday night we'd head out together. One particular Friday, though, our mate Rich said he wasn't coming. He'd met a girl and said he'd rather stay in with her than come out with us. Fair enough, really. None of us had ever met her, didn't know her name, and had no idea what she looked like. The rest of us went out anyway. We ended up in a lively bar with cheap drinks, good music and plenty of people. After a while, I spotted a girl, went over for a chat, and we got on really well. She was lovely and gorgeous, which is always a good combination. Eventually we got onto the usual question of where we were both from. She told me where she lived, and I said where I was from, only about five or ten miles away. She said, "Oh, I know someone from there." I asked, "Who?" She replied, "Rich \*\*\*\*\*." I laughed and said, "Yeah, he's one of my best mates." She asked where he was that night. Without thinking, I said, "He's at home with his girlfriend." The colour drained from her face. She froze, stood up without another word, and walked straight back to her friends. About five minutes later, my phone rang. It was Rich. "What the hell have you said?" he shouted. "This girl's gone absolutely mental at me!" By now you've probably worked it out. The girl I'd been chatting to was the very same girl Rich had said he stayed home to spend the evening with. And now I'd accidentally told the girl he was seeing that he was at home... with "his girlfriend". She was convinced he was cheating. To be fair, if someone had told me that story, I'd probably have struggled to believe it was nothing more than an unbelievably unlucky coincidence. If Rich had simply told the truth in the first place, none of it would ever have happened.

Kwaku, my wife is threatening to divorce me because I refuse to perform oral sex on her. Honestly, I am amazed. We have been married for nine years and have three children together. I don’t even enjoy being alone with her anymore because I already know where the conversation is heading. These days, I’m sometimes reluctant to go home because the moment I arrive, we’re likely to argue about it. She wants it all the time, and I simply don’t have the energy or interest. What makes it worse is that she never seems satisfied. She can enjoy it multiple times and still ask for “just one more.” Sometimes she grabs my head and keeps pulling me back as if she wants me to disappear completely. Eventually, I got frustrated and told her I would never do it again. Since then, she has been saying I should either resume or we should divorce. What confuses me is that this is something she only started experiencing recently. How can someone suddenly want to throw away nine years of marriage and everything we’ve built together over this? She says I’m denying her something that makes her happy, while I feel she’s making an unreasonable demand. At this point, we’re both standing our ground and the tension in the house is growing. Please, help me understand this situation. Am I being unfair, or is she taking things too far? How do we find common ground before this issue damages our marriage?

I think this is something we need to talk about. One common habit among many Africans, both men and women, is that we often see weight gain as an achievement. People get excited when they hear, “You are getting fat!” as if they have just won an award. But is gaining weight always a good thing? Why are we so reluctant to make healthy living a priority? Take a look at the Japanese, Chinese, and Koreans. In many of their cultures, excessive weight gain is seen as a health concern, not a compliment. This mindset is one of the reasons they tend to live longer. Africa has abundant natural foods, good weather, and strong people, yet the average Ghanaian life expectancy is around 63 years. Why should that be? Many women give birth and never make an effort to regain their fitness. The stomach grows larger year after year. No exercise, no walks, no gym… just eating, sleeping, scrolling through the phone, and complaining about a big tummy. This is not always a matter of lacking time; in many cases, it is a matter of discipline. What surprises me most are the young ladies who constantly complain about their weight while spending money on every slimming tea that appears online. If there is no medical condition involved, the basic solution is usually simple: eat better and exercise regularly. No tea can do sit-ups on your behalf. The men are pathetic! It is becoming common to see men under 40 carrying stomachs that arrive in a room five minutes before they do. What happened to men being active and physically fit? Let's be honest. Modern foods contain more processed ingredients, cars have reduced the amount we walk, and technology has made many of us comfortable with sitting all day. The solution is not complicated, …it is discipline. Some of us can spend four hours scrolling through social media but cannot spend ten minutes doing 50 sit-ups. A man under 50 struggles to do 20 push-ups but can lift a giant bowl of fufu without any difficulty. We are often contributors to our own health problems. Every day, many people register at gyms full of excitement, but only a few remain consistent after the first month. Do not wait until unnecessary weight gain starts affecting your health. Eat wisely, stay active, and pray. Life is already short enough; there is no need to make it shorter. After childbirth, work towards regaining your fitness. Young ladies, try to stay in shape. Men, let's keep ourselves active. A big tummy caused by unhealthy habits is not a sign of success, and no slimming tea can permanently fix what a lack of discipline created. It's time for Africans to rethink how we view health and fitness. Not every weight gain deserves congratulations. Sometimes, the best compliment is not "You've become fat," but "You look healthy."
