Looking over history, and how much labor was worth in silver or gold at various points in history, I think it's safe to say that the American salaries and standards of living that existed last century were hilariously unsustainable no matter who was in charge of the country. According to Google's AI (which might not be super accurate with these numbers), a typical artisan worker in the 2nd century AD, close to Rome's peak, made about 2-3 denarii per day, we'll call it 2.5 as a baseline estimate. Each denarius was about 4.5 grams of silver, so about 11.25 grams of silver per day was a typical Roman wage for a skilled worker. In today's silver prices that is worth about $27-$28, and that was a whole day's labor for a skilled worker in peak Rome. As I've told you guys before, the federal minimum wage in the early 1960s was about $1.25, and five silver quarters (before they were debased of course) was about 28 grams of silver, with a melt value of about $63. So in other words, an unskilled minimum wage worker in the 1960s made more per hour than a skilled Roman artisan would have made per day in the 2nd century. The early 1960s minimum wage was comparable to a six figure salary today in terms of its value. This is a huge disparity of course. I think looking back at history you'll see the Roman situation is a lot closer to the norm than the American situation, and in a way what is going on in America right now is sort of a regression to the mean. The Roman daily wage (about $28 as I stated earlier) is about $7,280 per year, and according to Google's AI the median wage today globally is about $10,000 per year which isn't that far off from the Roman number, a lot closer to the Roman number than even the modern American number as we slowly regress to the mean.
