WHAT SET THE GRAVE ABLAZE
al-Ḥafiẓ Ibn Rajab al-Ḥanbalī رحمه الله said:
Ibn Abī al-Dunyā رحمه الله said:
Suwayd ibn Saʿīd narrated to us, al-Ḥakam ibn Sinān narrated to us, on the authority of ʿAmr ibn Dīnār رحمه الله, who said:
"There was a man from the people of Madīnah who had a sister who died. He prepared her body and carried her to her grave. After she was buried and he returned to his family, he remembered that he had left behind a bag that he had with him in the grave. So he sought the help of one of his companions, and they came to the grave and dug it up until they found the bag."
"He then said to the man, 'Step aside so that I may see what state my sister is in.'"
"He lifted part of the covering over the grave, and the grave was ablaze with fire. He immediately covered it again, leveled the grave, and returned to his mother. He asked her about the condition of his sister."
"She said, 'She used to delay the Ṣalāh, and, as far as I know, she would pray without wuḍūʾ. She would also go to the doors of the neighbors while they were asleep, place her ear against their doors, and listen to their conversations.'"

THE STORY OF THE DONKEY
al-Ḥafiẓ Ibn Rajab al-Ḥanbalī رحمه الله said:
Ibn Abī al-Dunyā رحمه الله narrated in his book Man ʿĀsha Baʿd al-Mawt (Those Who Lived After Death), on the authority of Shihāb ibn Khirāsh, on the authority of his uncle al-ʿAwwām ibn Ḥawshab رحمه الله, on the authority of Mujāhid رحمه الله, who said:
"I had an errand to attend to, and while I was on the road, a donkey suddenly appeared with its neck protruding from the ground. It brayed in my face three times, then disappeared back into the earth. I continued until I reached the people I intended to visit, and they said, 'Why has your complexion changed?'"
"So I told them what had happened. They said, 'That was a young man from this neighborhood, and his mother is in that tent. Whenever she instructed him to do something, he would insult her and say, 'You are nothing but a donkey,' and then bray in her face. He died, and we buried him in that pit. Every day, at the same time that we buried him, he sticks his head out, brays three times toward the tent, then goes back inside.'"He also narrated it through another chain, on the authority of Shihāb, on the authority of his uncle al-ʿAwwām, on the authority of ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī al-Hudhayl رحمه الله, who said:
"There was a man who, whenever his mother spoke to him, would bray in her face three times..."Then he mentioned the remainder of the narration in abbreviated form.

ON THE ABODE OF THE SOULS OF THE DEAD IN THE BARZAKH
The Souls of the Believers
al-Ḥafiẓ Ibn Rajab al-Ḥanbalī رحمه الله said:
Salmān al-Fārisī رضي الله عنه and ʿAbdullāh ibn Salām رضي الله عنه met. One of them said:
"Whoever precedes the other should inform him of what he experiences."The other said:
"How can that be?"He replied:
"The souls of the believers roam in Paradise wherever they wish."Ibn Abī al-Dunyā رحمه الله narrated it through Jarīr, on the authority of Yaḥyā. It was also narrated through Ibn Lahīʿah, on the authority of Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb, on the authority of Manṣūr ibn Abī Manṣūr, that he asked ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr رضي الله عنهما about the souls of the believers when they die:
"Where are they?"He replied:
"They are in the forms of white birds beneath the shade of the Throne."The Souls of the Disbelievers Al-Layth رحمه الله narrated on the authority of Abū Qays, on the authority of Hudhayl, on the authority of Ibn Masʿūd رضي الله عنه, who said:
"The souls of the people of Pharaoh are in the bodies of black birds that go to Hell in the morning and return to it in the evening. That is their exposure."And ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Zayd ibn Aslam رحمه الله said regarding the statement of the Exalted:
"The Fire; they are exposed to it morning and evening..."

STORIES FROM THE GRAVE
al-Ḥafiẓ Ibn Rajab al-Ḥanbalī رحمه الله said:
Ibn Abī al-Dunyā رحمه الله narrated, through Mujālid, on the authority of al-Shaʿbī رحمه الله, that a man said to the Prophet ﷺ:
"I passed by Badr and saw a man emerge from the earth, and another man struck him with a mace he had until he disappeared into the earth. Then he emerged, and the same thing was done to him repeatedly."The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said:
"That is Abū Jahl ibn Hishām; he will be punished until the Day of Resurrection."Ibn Abī al-Dunyā رحمه الله narrated, through Ḥammād ibn Salamah, on the authority of Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, on the authority of his father ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr رحمه الله, who said:
"While a rider was traveling between Makkah and Madīnah, he passed by a cemetery. A man emerged from his grave, engulfed in flames and bound in iron. The rider said, "O servant of Allāh, sprinkle! Sprinkle!" Another man emerged after him and said, "O servant of Allāh, do not sprinkle!" The rider fainted, and his mount veered off to al-ʿArj. He awoke to find that his hair had turned white, like the white thughamah plant."

THE SHĪʿAH BETRAYAL OF ḤUSAYN رضي الله عنه
Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله said:
When they (the Shīʿah) wrote to Imām Ḥusayn رضي الله عنه, he sent his cousin to them, and when he went to them by himself they betrayed him; sold their Hereafter for this world, delivered him to his enemies, fought alongside his enemies (and one of them killed him). So what abstinence do those people possess, and what fighting in the way of Allāh did they undertake?
Imām ʿAlī رضي الله عنه suffered greatly from the Shīʿah, to the extent of praying against them, saying:
"O Allāh, they are disgusted with me and I am disgusted with them. They are weary of me and I am weary of them. Replace them for me with better ones, and replace me for them with someone worse."They cheated and betrayed him, and wrote letters of support to those who were fighting him. They used to betray him if he gave them positions of authority or entrusted them with wealth; and these were their conduct before they became Rāfiḍah (then, what about after they became Rawāfiḍ?). They were called the Shīʿah (party) of ʿAlī when the people became divided into two groups: one group followed those who wanted to avenge the murder of ʿUthmān رضي الله عنه (the party of ʿUthmān), and another group followed Imām ʿAlī رضي الله عنه (the party of ʿAlī). Those were the best of the Shīʿah, and yet they mistreated Imām ʿAlī رضي الله عنه and his sons al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn رضي الله عنهما through their evil conduct. The Shīʿah are the quickest people to succumb to the blame of the blamers, the quickest people to stir up crises, upheaval, turmoil, and disturbances, and the weakest of all people when it comes to facing them. They deceive whoever they claim to support and assist from among the Prophet's ﷺ family and progeny. Then, once he trusts them after becoming convinced of their promises, those who criticize them come to them, and they betray him, turn their backs on him, hand him over to his enemies, and prefer this world over him. This is the reason why sensible Muslims, such as ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما, ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما, Abū Bakr ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Hishām رحمه الله, and others, advised Imām Ḥusayn رضي الله عنه, warned him, and counseled him not to go to them, because they knew that they would abandon him; that they would not aid him, and that they would not fulfill the undertakings and promises they had made in their letters to him. What happened occurred exactly as those people had stated. The supplication of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb رضي الله عنه (against the people of Iraq) and the supplication of Imām ʿAlī رضي الله عنه (against the Shīʿah) were answered by Allāh. He placed over them al-Ḥajjāj ibn Yūsuf رحمه الله, who did not accept the good deeds of the righteous among them, nor did he pardon the evil ones among them. The evils of the Shīʿah spread even to those who were not among them, until their corruption became widespread. Before us are books written by Muslim scholars on the ascetics of the Islamic community, and we do not find the name of any Rāfiḍī among them.

Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen رحمه الله said:
“It is obligatory upon the student of knowledge to be keen on the foundational, primary books, rather than modern writings. This is because some contemporary authors do not possess firmly grounded knowledge. So when you read what they have written, you find it superficial—sometimes merely نقل (copying) verbatim, or rephrasing into lengthy wording that is essentially empty.
So you must hold fast to the foundational works—adhere to the books of the Salaf, for they are far better and more blessed than the books of later generations.
Thirdly: Beware of filling your library with books that contain no good. I do not just say books that contain harm—I also mean those that contain no benefit. Books are of three types:
1. Those that contain good
2. Those that contain evil
3. Those that contain neither good nor evil
So strive to make your library free from books that contain no benefit or that contain harm. There are books called ‘literature’ which merely waste time without benefit. And there are harmful books with specific ideologies and methodologies—these too should not enter your library, whether they harm one’s methodology or creed, such as the books of innovators that corrupt belief, or revolutionary writings that corrupt one’s manhaj.
Every book that brings harm should not enter your library. For books are nourishment for the soul just as food and drink are nourishment for the body. If you nourish yourself with such books, great harm will come to you, and you will develop upon a path contrary to the correct way of a true student of knowledge.”

Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen رحمه الله said:
“You must be with Allah five times, conversing with Him during the day and night. If a person were granted an appointment with a king five times a day, he would consider that one of his great honors. He would rejoice and say: ‘Every day I sit with the king five times!’
But you converse with the King of kings—Allah, the Mighty and Majestic—at least five times a day. So why do you not rejoice in that? Praise Allah for this blessing and establish the prayer.
And the Prophet’s statement ﷺ: ‘and you establish the prayer’ means that you perform it properly and uprightly—with its conditions, pillars, and obligations.”
