British police on Thursday said that search warrants they secured to search properties linked to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor had been issued unlawfully and must be quashed, but said the investigation into King Charles' younger brother was ongoing.
Mountbatten-Windsor, 66, was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office in February, linked to his relationship with the late US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and searches were carried out at properties in Sandringham, eastern England, and Windsor.
The arrest of the senior royal, eighth in line to the throne, was unprecedented in modern times and a Reuters photo of the ashen-faced former prince leaving the police station made front pages around the world.
POLICE ACCEPT WARRANTS NOT LAWFUL
However, subsequently Mountbatten-Windsor, who has not made any public comment since his arrest, launched a legal challenge and applied for the search warrants to be quashed.
Thames Valley Police said it now agreed these had not been properly granted by the courts.
"We accept the position that the initial court's decision to issue warrants under the specific piece of legislation used was incorrect and therefore these must be legally quashed," a Thames Valley Police spokesperson said.
"Legal proceedings are currently ongoing to decide how material seized during the searches will be managed and whether we can lawfully retain it in support of our ongoing investigation."
At a hearing at London's High Court on Thursday, Judge Nicholas Hilliard said the force was applying to keep the seized property, which Mountbatten-Windsor was opposing, and the issue would not be settled until next year.
A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police said it had not returned any material to the royal other than that which was not deemed to be connected to their investigation.

The new entity will unite the storied film studios of Paramount and Warner Bros.; the CBS broadcast network; a sprawling portfolio of pay-TV networks that include CNN, TNT, MTV and BET; and streaming services Paramount+ and HBO Max, all under one roof.
The appointment of Kreiz to a top executive position alongside Ellison speaks to a governance question that has surrounded Ellison’s aggressive pursuit of the legacy media assets: The tech executive and son of billionaire Larry Ellison can buy it, but can he lead it?
Not even 18 months ago, Ellison was the CEO of film production company Skydance with a limited portfolio of hits, namely the Tom Cruise-led Mission: Impossible franchise and “Top Gun: Maverick.”
By August 2025, he was successfully closing an acquisition of Paramount, a deal worth around $8 billion. Roughly a month later, he started his campaign for WBD, spurring a back-and-forth bidding war that would ultimately result in a deal worth roughly $110 billion on an enterprise basis to merge two of Hollywood’s biggest media companies.
Kreiz is a 30-year veteran of the media space, arguably best known for ushering “Barbie” to the big screen in 2023.
He’s earned a reputation as a turnaround man, with roots in entertainment despite his more recent stint in consumer goods.
He joins Paramount Skydance on Monday, and becomes co-CEO on Tuesday upon closing. The pair of co-CEOs announced their full leadership team on Monday.

Simon Andriesz @SAndriesz, THE MAN WHO EXPOSED LUTNICK has died.
He took his own life this week, while staying at a trauma treatment centre, the same place he had gone to try to survive what years of fighting had done to him.
I wrote [THIS] piece about him at the start of August.
We last spoke on 13 August. Reading my own words back now feels different. Heavier. I did not know then that this would be the last chapter.
Simon gave me his story directly.
The embezzlement he uncovered, the fraud he reported, the heart attacks, the police complaints, the years @TheFCA spent doing almost nothing while his life fell apart around him.
He handed the CFTC and HMRC enough to secure real fines. He handed the BBC enough for a full documentary.
And still the one regulator that was supposed to protect him let him carry all of it alone for 7 years.
He was one of the most credible people I have ever spoken to. Everything he told me checked out. And he still ended up broken by the very system meant to catch people like him when they fell.
I am angry writing this. Angry that a man this capable, this thorough, this willing to hand over evidence and testimony for years, was left to fight completely alone until he could not fight anymore.
