In an interview with the Financial Times in Kabul, Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi said Afghanistan would “absolutely” welcome American investment in mining, infrastructure, agriculture and trade. “Relations between Afghanistan and the United States should not be assessed through the lens of the past 20 years of war, but rather on the basis of future co-operation,” he said. “Our economic policy is open.” Geological surveys estimate Afghanistan holds at least $1 trillion in largely untapped resources, including copper, lithium, cobalt, gold, iron ore and niobium. Kabul is also pressing for the return of frozen reserves, which Afghanistan’s central bank puts at $9.5 billion held abroad, including about $7 billion in the United States. The outreach comes five years after the Taliban returned to power and as the group tries to ease its diplomatic isolation, despite continued international criticism over severe restrictions on women and girls. President Trump has shown little interest in closer ties and has instead pressed for the return of Bagram air base, a demand the Taliban has rejected.

Israel and Greece signed their largest-ever bilateral defense agreement today at the Israeli Defense Ministry in Tel Aviv. It will integrate Rafael’s David’s Sling and SPYDER systems with Israel Aerospace Industries’ BARAK MX, plus command-and-control architecture. Israeli officials described it as the first time Israel has exported a complete, multi-tier defense array covering ballistic missiles, aircraft, and drones. Full operational capability is targeted within 35 months, with systems delivered in stages. Greece secured more than 25% industrial participation (about €700 million) and source-code access for greater operational control. A supplementary €26 million contract for Rafael’s Drone Dome was also signed.

In an extraordinary appeal, the officer says many Iranians assume police and security personnel live comfortably or have other sources of income. He says the reality is very different, with officers themselves increasingly struggling to survive financially. He says he has been unable to afford milk for his own household for a long time and describes the same desperation among his colleagues. “Who can I tell my pain to? I look at my colleagues and they are all like me.” But his criticism goes beyond his salary. He pleads with authorities to address the suffering of ordinary Iranians, says those currently in charge are incapable of solving people’s problems and that there are better people who could govern, and even describes those responsible as godless while urging them to “return to God.” This is particularly significant coming from inside the police. The Islamic Republic depends on its security apparatus to contain unrest, enforce its authority and ultimately protect the political system. When ordinary Iranians cannot afford basic necessities, the Islamic Republic has a social crisis. When the police officers expected to contain that anger say they cannot afford them either, it has a security problem too.
