Born in 1943 in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth, his career is more than just acting — it's a lifelong dedication to his country through the power of art.
🎭 Theatrical Genius and Anti-Apartheid Fighter
Alongside Athol Fugard and Winston Ntshona, Kani co-created plays that changed the world's perception of South Africa: "Sizwe Bansi is Dead" and "The Island". In 1975, he won a Tony Award for Best Actor for these works. He risked his life stepping onto the stage with sharp anti-apartheid performances.
🌍 From Theatre to Marvel
Kani is known not only to theatre lovers. Millions of viewers recognize him as King T'Chaka in the Marvel films ("Black Panther", "Captain America: Civil War") and as the voice of Rafiki in the "Lion King" remake.
