In the era of "automated disinformation," it has become too easy to claim the discovery of aliens For the first time in over 15 years, the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) committee on the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) revised the protocols that govern how scientists assess and verify evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence. The updates are designed in response to the ever-changing media landscape, rife with AI-generated disinformation and dubious claims of discovering alien technologies. Thanks to large-scale astronomical surveys and advancements in space observation technologies, many scientists consider the discovery of extraterrestrial intelligence inevitable. They believe the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations is predetermined by the theory of probability. They argue that there are far more planets in the universe than grains of sand on Earth—only in the Milky Way, about four billion Earth-sized planets are located in the habitable zones of stars similar to the Sun. SETI has set itself the task of preparing scientists worldwide for the complex challenge of directly detecting aliens. A key aspect of the updated protocols is the fundamental principle embedded in the famous statement by astronomer, astrophysicist, and exobiology pioneer Carl Sagan: "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." In addition to serving as a guide for astronomers, the new protocols also require scientists to prioritize truth over sensationalism. The protocols, known as the "Declaration of Principles Concerning Activities Following the Detection of Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI)," serve as a guide covering all aspects from first contact and evidence verification to issues of scientist harassment and disclosure of their personal data. The protocols emphasize transparency and scientific rigor in observations and clearly state what an astronomer should do in the event of first contact with extraterrestrial intelligence. They also address modern issues, including the erosion of trust in the post-truth era. "The information environment we operate in today is much more complex than in 2010," said a SETI representative. "In the era of deepfakes, automated disinformation, and instant global communication, one unverified claim can cause confusion or panic." The new protocols ensure that scientists adhere to the highest standards of evidence before making public statements. The revised protocols clearly state what an astronomer should do if they detect an anomaly in their data that may indicate the presence of extraterrestrial intelligence. "No public statements should be made until the signal or artifact is thoroughly confirmed by independent organizations using different equipment," emphasized the SETI representative. In addition to verifying and disseminating the discovery to the general public, the protocols also address the topic of contact with aliens. No SETI researcher should take on the responsibility of responding to any extraterrestrial intelligence that contacts them directly: "Transmitting a response to extraterrestrial intelligence is a decision that belongs to all of humanity." According to SETI, international consultations before contacting an alien civilization should be conducted by the UN Secretary-General. Proprietary wireless chargers will soon become obsolete — a unified Qi 50W standard is on the way Future generations of smartphones, regardless of the manufacturer, will be able to use a unified fast wireless charging with a power of 50W. The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) and major tech giants, including Apple, Google, and Xiaomi, have agreed on the hardware specifications for the Qi 50W standard, with the official release of the technology planned for 2028. The unified Qi 50W standard is set to replace Qi2 25W. It is reported that the open Qi 50W standard, based on Xiaomi's architecture, aims to overcome brand dependency by offering safe high-speed wireless charging for phones of different brands and third-party accessories. The capabilities of wired device charging seem to have peaked, but wireless charging technology still has much room for growth. At a recent unscheduled WPC meeting on the Qi standard, held at Xiaomi's headquarters in Beijing, representatives from Apple, Google, Huawei, Oppo, and vivo gathered to agree on technical specifications and conduct prototype testing for the future high-power Qi 50W standard. Xiaomi played a key role in developing the Qi 50W standard by providing elements of its own wireless charging architecture with low inductance, low voltage, and high power. Reducing inductance is intended to decrease losses in coil modules, allowing for better adaptation to diverse designs and more complex device structures. Reduced voltage will help achieve a balance between safety, charging efficiency, thermal management, and system complexity. One of the main goals of the Qi 50W standard is compatibility with products from different manufacturers. By creating an open universal standard for fast wireless charging with a power of 50W, the industry hopes to ensure a safer thermal environment, reduced losses, and consistently high charging speeds for various brands and third-party accessories. Chinese Companies Introduce Electric Motors That Eliminate Manual Gear Shifting for Bicycles At Eurobike 2026 in Frankfurt, two Chinese companies showcased electric motors that radically change the design and structure of electric bicycles. The new products were introduced by DJI's subsidiary Avinox and the young manufacturer Gobao. Their Motor Gearbox Unit (MGU) type motors combine the electric motor and transmission into a single central unit. Bicycles no longer need a traditional shifter and multi-speed cassette on the rear wheel — gears shift seamlessly. Both developments implement an integrated electronic continuously variable transmission (eCVT). Unlike existing motors with built-in gearboxes that use up to 12 fixed gears, the MGUs from Avinox and Gobao offer, essentially, an infinite and imperceptible number of gear ratio changes for the cyclist. Users can either set any number of virtual gears themselves or simply specify the cadence at which they wish to pedal, and the motor will automatically adjust its operation mode and gear ratio depending on road conditions. The Avinox MGU motor remains a concept (though production is expected to start in 2027), but key parameters have already been revealed: a transmission range of about 520%, shifting in less than 0.1 seconds, operation under high load, and the ability to shift without movement. The company promises compatibility with both chain and belt drives, reduced maintenance costs by eliminating the rear derailleur and cassette, and platform adaptation for eMTB, eTrekking, eSUV, eGravel, and other types of electric bicycles. The concept was developed in collaboration with companies Canyon, Commencal, Forbidden, and Mondraker, which showcased frame prototypes for the new drive system. Gobao's specifications appear closer to a production product: the MGU X1 provides up to 120 Nm of torque and 1200 W peak power with a shifting range of 400%, while the X1P offers up to 150 Nm and 1500 W with a range of 500%; both units weigh 3.85 kg, support a cadence above 120 rpm, are designed for versions with speeds up to 25 or 45 km/h, and are claimed to be maintenance-free. Additionally, Gobao promotes batteries with capacities of 500, 750, and 900 Wh, supporting fast charging with a 30 A current: for example, a 750 Wh battery charges from 0 to 80% in 28 minutes. If such MGUs with eCVT prove their durability and are not too expensive, the technology will first establish itself in high-end mountain e-bikes and may then transition to urban, cargo, and family models. Eliminating the cassette will simplify bicycle construction and enhance riding comfort, as well as improve handling by shifting the center of gravity towards the center of the bicycle. Bicycle maintenance and repair will also become easier: there will be no need to clean the cassette after riding off-road and in bad weather, which remains a tedious task. Queen without a Gas Station: Toyota's Sales of Combustion Engine Cars Decline for the Fourth Consecutive Month, While Demand for Electric Vehicles Soars by 170% The rise in fuel prices in Western markets due to the US-Iran conflict has increasingly driven vehicle buyers towards electric cars. Tesla announced a recruitment drive for its Berlin facility, while Japanese automaker Toyota has been witnessing a decline in demand for combustion engine cars and a rise in the popularity of its electric vehicles for the fourth consecutive month. Toyota Motor remains the world's largest automaker, as noted by the resource Electrek. As of May, its total sales fell year-on-year by 7.2% to 834,279 vehicles, including the Lexus brand. Toyota's sales have been declining year-on-year for the fourth consecutive month. In May, Toyota's sales in China dropped the most (-31.7%), while North America (-0.1%), Japan, and Europe (-0.3%) maintained stable figures. Since the beginning of the year, Toyota's sales in China have decreased by 15% year-on-year to 579,419 vehicles. In May alone, 102,299 vehicles were sold there. In the US, Toyota's May sales fell by 0.6% to 238,800 vehicles, although the potential bestseller RAV4 crossover, available in a hybrid version with a plug-in battery option, was recently introduced to the local market. In China, electric vehicles, which Toyota develops with local partners but sells under its brand, are gaining popularity. In April, the electric crossover bZ3X, produced at a joint venture with China's GAC, became the best-selling model of this plant in the Chinese market. Globally, Toyota's electric vehicle sales grew by a record 170% to 37,313 units. Of course, in absolute terms, this is small not only for the global market capacity but also for Toyota's production volumes. In the first five months of this year, Toyota managed to deliver 155,074 electric vehicles to the global market, which is 138% more than the result for the same period last year. Electric vehicles currently account for no more than 7% of Toyota's product sales structure. Even the brand's electric pioneer, the bZ4X crossover, became the third most popular electric vehicle in the US by the end of the first quarter, and in Japan, it topped the list for the first time in Toyota's history. In China, the popularity of Toyota's electric vehicles is mainly driven by affordable components from local suppliers, allowing the starting price of the bZ3X to be kept at $15,000. This year, three-row electric crossovers Highlander BEV and the platform-sharing Lexus TZ will appear in the North American market. Among the reasons for the increased demand for its electric vehicles, Toyota openly cites the rise in hydrocarbon fuel prices. If you value what we do, you can support our projects on Boosty. The first DDR5 modules with AMD EXPO Ultra Low Latency support are up to 79% more expensive than regular ones At the Computex 2026 exhibition, AMD introduced EXPO Ultra Low Latency — updated RAM overclocking profiles for Ryzen-based systems. The company claimed that the new profiles could improve gaming performance by an average of 4% compared to standard EXPO profiles. AMD also suggested that memory modules with EXPO ULL support should not be significantly more expensive than existing EXPO modules. However, the first retail offerings from G.Skill paint a different picture. “AMD understood from partners that they expect to release them at the same prices as current kits”, said David McAfee, general manager of the Radeon and Ryzen divisions at AMD. Reportedly, new dual-channel G.Skill Trident Z5 NeoX RGB memory kits in a 32GB DDR5-6000 configuration with EXPO ULL support have appeared at retailer Newegg. The new products are offered with timings of CL26, CL28, CL30, and CL36. The DDR5-6000 CL26 variant is priced at $1099.99. For comparison, the Trident Z5 Neo DDR5-6000 CL26 kit with standard AMD EXPO profiles is offered at the same place for $699.99, making the NeoX variant 57% more expensive. The most significant price difference is observed in the Trident Z5 NeoX DDR5-6000 CL28 variant, which is priced at $999.99, while the Neo kit with standard EXPO profiles is priced at $559.99. The price difference is 79%. Price differences are smaller for kits with higher latencies. For example, the Trident Z5 NeoX DDR5-6000 CL30 kit costs $619.99, while the variant with regular EXPO profiles is $544.44. The Trident Z5 NeoX DDR5-6000 CL36 kit is priced at $549.99, while the variant with regular EXPO profiles is $499.99. NeoX modules provide lower sub-timings. If regular modules with latencies of CL26, CL28, and CL30 have a tRAS value of 96 cycles, NeoX has 32 cycles. The kit with primary timings of CL36 has its tRAS reduced from 96 to 76 cycles. NeoX modules with CL26 and CL28 operate at a voltage of 1.35V, while the corresponding memory kits with regular EXPO profiles operate at voltages of 1.45V and 1.40V, respectively. For CL30 and CL36 kits, the operating voltage remains the same at 1.35V. G.Skill stated that the Trident Z5 NeoX modules use AMD EXPO ULL with additional memory timing settings. The company also mentioned that to enable this profile, users need a compatible motherboard and a supported BIOS version. AMD's idea was good but came at the most inopportune time. The EXPO ULL technology can improve latencies, but AMD's price expectations were too optimistic. Memory manufacturers and retailers have turned it into yet another premium segment. Samsung has stopped doubting the feasibility of mastering the 1.4-nm process by 2029 The intentions of Samsung to master the production of 1.4-nm chips by 2029 were last mentioned at the end of January this year, but South Korean media claim that since then, the feasibility of implementing this plan has been questioned within the company. As of now, the arguments in favor of mastering the 1.4-nm process by the specified date have prevailed, and the company is actively moving in this direction. Samsung Electronics recently aligned its plans for mastering the 1.4-nm technology with suppliers of specialized equipment, including American companies Applied Materials and Lam Research. Notably, within its 1.4-nm process, Samsung intends to use High-NA EUV equipment, which has a high numerical aperture, for processing certain layers of semiconductor chips. ASML equipment, which allows this, has already been installed at one of Samsung Electronics' facilities, but its use is still experimental. It should be noted that Intel is also a proponent of actively implementing High-NA EUV within technological norms below 2 nm, while the world's largest contract chip manufacturer, TSMC, considers it too expensive, although it does not rule out its use in some distant future. Initially, according to Korean media, Samsung aimed for 2027 as the deadline for mastering the 1.4-nm process, but later shifted it by two years to more actively expand the range of 2-nm processes. The next flagship mobile processor, Exynos 2800, is also planned to be produced using an improved version of the 2-nm process, rather than the promising 1.4-nm. It is expected that Samsung will produce not only its own mobile processors, Exynos 2700, but also AI chips, Tesla AI6, using the 2-nm technology. Competing TSMC plans to start mass production of 1.4-nm chips in the second half of 2028, with sample products provided to clients in the third quarter of 2027. At this stage, TSMC will not use the expensive High-NA EUV equipment, unlike Samsung, and will prefer to wait at least until 2029 for this. Intel Corporation will not begin mass production of its chips using the 14A technology until 2029, with sample units appearing a year earlier. Like Samsung, it plans to use High-NA EUV within the 14A process. Elon Musk recently noted that he expects to use Intel's 14A technology for the production of advanced AI chips for SpaceX and Tesla at their joint venture, Terafab, which is under construction. It is also expected that Apple may become a client of Intel for the contract production of chips using the 14A technology. If you value what we do, you can support our projects on Boosty.
