Canadian Scientists Learn to Print Contact Lenses with a 3D Printer The technology of contact lenses has come a long way. The first ones were made of glass, and wearing them all day was uncomfortable. Today, they are made from soft materials like silicone hydrogel and are almost unnoticeable on the eye. However, people with an unusual corneal shape face difficulties, and standard models usually mean a compromise between comfort and clear vision. Scientists at the University of Waterloo in Canada have proposed a solution to this problem. Canadian scientists have suggested using 3D printing to manufacture custom contact lenses. The process they developed is almost no different from making any other objects from plastic or metal; special software is used to create a digital model of the lens. The inner surface of the lenses is designed to match the unique shape of the patient's cornea, while the outer surface provides the necessary vision correction. The entire process takes about 20 minutes, and the lenses can be obtained in a single visit to a specialist. However, there are some challenges. The ideal material for contact lenses is silicone—it is soft, oxygen-permeable, and biocompatible, but it is poorly compatible with 3D printing technology. To overcome this problem, scientists have developed a new hydrophilic (water-attracting) silicone formula that can be used for layer-by-layer object creation. Another difficulty is related to the features of 3D printing itself. When forming an object layer by layer, stepped defects appear on the surface—if you look closely at any 3D-printed object, these defects are easily noticeable. In the case of a contact lens, this texture may be visually unnoticeable, but it can significantly affect comfort and optical clarity. To solve this problem, scientists propose applying an ultra-thin coating to the lenses that smooths the surface without changing the individual shape of the lens. Laboratory studies have confirmed the biocompatibility of the lenses, meaning their safety when interacting with eye tissues. The 3D-printed contact lenses provide optical clarity and mechanical characteristics comparable to commercial samples. Now, the project authors are preparing to test the technology in real-world conditions and to obtain a patent for their invention—all of which will accelerate the technology's entry into the market. AI Breathes New Life into Hard Drives — HDD Manufacturers Urgently Expand Capacity Before the AI-related frenzy began, one might have thought that traditional hard drives were becoming niche products, gradually giving way to solid-state drives. However, in the server segment, they are in high demand, and under current conditions, manufacturers of HDD components find it reasonable to start expanding their capacities. Hard drives are in demand in AI infrastructure because there is a sustained demand for relatively economical storage solutions for large volumes of data. In the last quarter, prices for nearline hard drives for server systems increased sequentially by 10%. Up to 60% of this type of product is purchased by American cloud giants like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon (AWS), who dictate demand and contribute to price growth. The entire market, in terms of supply sources, is divided among three companies: American companies Western Digital and Seagate Technology control more than 40% each, while Japanese Toshiba accounts for the remaining 17%. All three players are now making efforts to produce server-grade hard drives with capacities exceeding 40 TB. Western Digital is preparing to start producing such drives in the second half of this year and aims to offer 100 TB hard drives by 2029, which will use HAMR technology with heated magnetic plates during data recording. Seagate already produces drives of this type with capacities up to 44 TB and intends to increase their capacity to 100 TB by increasing the data recording density on the plate. Toshiba offers hard drives with capacities ranging from 30 to 34 TB using alternative MAMR technology, and next year this company expects to surpass the 40 TB capacity mark. Although SSDs are crucial in AI systems infrastructure due to their ability to quickly process large volumes of information, traditional magnetic plate hard drives remain important for storing "cold copies." Accordingly, demand for them is growing proportionally, and suppliers of HDD components are forced to increase their production volumes. Magnetic heads, plates, glass substrates, flexible cables, and printed circuit boards are all now required in greater quantities. For example, magnetic plate manufacturer Resonac will increase the capacity of its Singapore complex by 31%. Glass substrate manufacturer HOYA will build a new facility in Vietnam by 2028. TDK announced back in May that it would expand the production of magnetic heads and drive elements to better meet demand in the server segment. Other market participants are not lagging behind. German Saxon Q has released the world's first quantum computers with diamond processors The German company Saxon Q announced the commercial launch of quantum computers SXQ128 and SXQ512, with 128 and 512 physical qubits, respectively. The developers call them the first systems on diamond NV centers (nitrogen vacancies) to surpass the ten-qubit mark. Both setups are designed in a standard server rack format, connect to a regular power grid, and operate at room temperature—almost a home version. Saxon Q was founded in 2021 by physicists from Leipzig University as a spin-off. The researchers aimed to create a quantum computer without cryogenic refrigerators, vacuum chambers, and specially prepared rooms. In the scientific field, they all specialized in the physics of synthetic diamonds with nitrogen vacancies, which can be considered natural qubits capable of operating without creating special conditions. In such diamonds, qubits are formed based on negatively charged NV centers—defects in the crystal lattice where a nitrogen atom is adjacent to a vacant site. Quantum information is encoded in the spin states of electrons and nearby atomic nuclei. The initial state is set by laser pulses, operations are performed using microwave and radiofrequency signals, and the result is read by the fluorescence of NV centers. The diamond lattice sufficiently isolates the spins from the thermal environment, allowing the processor to operate at normal temperature and maintain quantum state coherence for a long time. Saxon Q's main production achievement was the joint implantation of nitrogen and sulfur ions into the diamond. Conventional methods convert only 1–10% of implanted atoms into usable NV centers, whereas the addition of sulfur increased the yield of functional qubits to over 85%. Sulfur aids both in the formation of vacancies near nitrogen and in maintaining the negative charge of NV centers necessary for qubit operation. The claimed maximum accuracy of quantum gates reaches 99.92%, corresponding to less than one error per thousand operations, although independent test results for the 128- and 512-qubit models have not yet been published. However, the numbers 128 and 512 do not mean that all qubits form a single fully connected quantum register. The systems are built on a multiprocessor modular scheme: in SXQ128, eight qubits are fully entangled within each core, and in SXQ512, sixteen. The total capacity is formed by combining several NV modules under the control of a proprietary quantum operating system. The machines are compatible with Qiskit and OpenQASM and are intended for variational algorithms, quantum chemistry, material modeling, optimization, and quantum convolutional neural networks. SXQ128 is promised to be delivered three months after ordering, while deliveries of SXQ512 are expected to begin in the second quarter of 2027. Tesla has launched its robotaxis in two Florida cities, but only formally In the vicinity of Tesla's headquarters in the capital of Texas, the brand's robotaxis have been transporting passengers by special invitation for over a year, but the fleet size cannot be called extensive, nor its operation intensive. Now, purely formally, Tesla's driverless taxi service is starting to operate in two cities in the state of Florida. As noted by Electrek, this became known from a brief statement on the official service page on the social network X: "Robotaxis are now in Tampa and Orlando". This week, Tesla is reporting on the results of the second fiscal quarter, and therefore the company needs such events to mention to investors. However, the company did not specify how many robotic taxis will hit the streets of the two mentioned cities in Florida, although it did schematically outline the approved area for their operation, covering several blocks. Apparently, a Tesla-hired observer will be present in the robotaxi cabin in Tampa and Orlando, although they may be seated in the front passenger seat, as is the case in Texas. Later, the company removed the safety tester from the robotaxi cabin, but they continued to invisibly monitor the situation from a car that followed the taxi and required the presence of a separate driver. In other words, the pair of vehicles still required a total of two drivers, they were just concentrated in one of them. The size of the automated taxi fleet also remains a topic not favored for discussion by Tesla representatives. If at the end of April there were 25 cars on the streets of Austin, by June their number had decreased to 17. In Dallas, there were four more taxis, but only 21 cars moved within a limited perimeter across Texas. Elon Musk explained this slowness in terms of service expansion by emphasizing safety. Independent observers note that in Austin, Tesla's robotaxis are involved in accidents or near-accident situations four times more often on average. In the US market, the competing Waymo has every reason to be considered a leader, as its fleet of 3,000 driverless taxis is distributed across several major cities, and they perform more than 500,000 paid trips weekly. Tesla, however, still allows only carefully selected clients to use its robotaxis. If you value what we do, you can support our projects on Boosty. With love, NSWTL.
