Plague and COVID are not clinically similar, and the timeline is the tell. Severe COVID declined over WEEKS. Pneumonic plague is RAPIDLY FATAL — a healthy person can be dead within days of symptom onset. That speed is diagnostic information by itself. It's also why treatment is time-critical: oral Cipro, oral doxycycline, IV aminoglycosides all work, but the window is narrow. Post-exposure prophylaxis runs 7 days. Knowing the ordinary protocol is how you tell routine caution from real alarm.

Reports claim that Russian lab worker may have caused community transmission of deadly pulmonary variant of Yersinia pestis, by John Leake
The worst outbreak of the plague, also called the “Black Death,” in history was in 1347. It is now believed to have originated in the Chuy Valley of Kazakhstan and spread along trade routes before reaching Europe by way of rodents such as black rats infesting baggage trains and ships. The rodents were infested with fleas that acted as as vectors for the Yersinia pestis bacterium. The rats and fleas quickly infested ports, trading centers, and overcrowded medieval towns and cities with poor sanitation. The public health threat of a biolab in someone's backyard has brought one death and the terror of plague back to the modern day in Russia.

Designer genetic material can tell a cell to make almost any protein. That's extraordinary, and it's now being aimed at cancer - Moderna's mRNA therapy in metastatic melanoma, expressing tumor proteins to provoke an immune attack, paired with Keytruda to release the brakes the tumor puts on the immune system.
Against advanced melanoma, that's a trade many would take. But the engineering problem is UNCHANGED: still no built-in mechanism to switch the instruction off. In oncology that risk is weighed openly.
In mass administration to healthy people, IT WAS NEVER WEIGHED AT ALL.
