The CPI(ML) Liberation strongly condemns the three-year imprisonment and fine imposed by a Pilibhit court on party leader Afroz Alam, member of the Uttar Pradesh State Standing Committee and UP State Convenor of the Insaf Manch, along with seven other party activists and poor villagers, in a 2011 case arising from their struggle against the illegal occupation of Gram Sabha land. During the course of the case, the comrades were badly beaten and subjected to brutal torture, including the use of rollers on their thighs.
The case is a clear instance of the state machinery being used to shield powerful land-grabbers and target those fighting for the rights of the rural poor. Instead of acting against the influential encroachers, the police implicated the protesting villagers and CPI(ML) activists and subsequently invoked the Gangsters Act against them.
Though the court has granted interim bail to all eight comrades, the conviction comes against the backdrop of increasingly vindictive targeting and repression of workers' and farmers' movements in Uttar Pradesh under the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government.
Just yesterday, the Allahabad High Court quashed the NSA detention of Aakriti Chaudhary, a Delhi University graduate who had spent more than five months in preventive detention for supporting workers fighting for wage increases. The Court termed the case “concocted” and awarded ₹5 lakh in compensation. Several workers and activists continue to remain incarcerated, including under the draconian NSA.
The Yogi regime has also recently intensified its witch-hunt against activists of Left parties and the farmers' movement, including through directions for the preparation of large-scale and unlawful dossiers containing personal and family information of activists.
These incidents expose the vindictive and anti-people character of the Yogi-BJP regime and its systematic misuse of state power to suppress workers', farmers' and people's democratic struggles.
This large-scale criminalisation of dissent and democratic voices, the imposition of draconian laws, and the targeting of activists fighting for people's rights must be firmly resisted.

| 3 | In a significant victory against the harassment of SC, ST and OBC communities in West Bengal, the High Court on August 18 stayed the state government’s order mandating blanket reverification of all SC/ST/OBC certificates issued since 2011.
The newly elected BJP government in West Bengal had announced mandatory reverification of all such certificates issued during the tenure of the previous TMC government, ostensibly to check the possibility of fake certificates. CPI(ML) Liberation had strongly opposed the move, describing it as a veritable caste SIR aimed at putting the entire SC/ST/OBC population through an arbitrary and discriminatory verification exercise.
Comrade Abhijit Mazumdar, Secretary of the West Bengal State Committee of CPI(ML) Liberation, and Comrade Malay Tewari, member of the party’s State Committee, challenged the government’s order before the High Court. The case was argued by advocates Raghunath Chakraborty and Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya.
The High Court’s decision to stay the blanket reverification order comes as a major relief for around 1.69 crore SC/ST/OBC certificate holders in West Bengal, who would otherwise have faced the burden and harassment of mandatory reverification.
CPI(ML) Liberation welcomed the court’s intervention as a significant victory against the state government’s arbitrary and vindictive measure. The party demanded that the West Bengal government respect the court order in letter and spirit and immediately stop harassing SC/ST/OBC communities in the name of mandatory reverification. | 399 |

| 5 | India’s unconditional independence from colonialism and all its variants; full constitutional liberties and rights for every Indian, without discrimination; and a robust democracy where, in Rabindranath Tagore’s words, “the mind is without fear and the head is held high.” This is the India our martyrs dreamed of, fought for, and gave their lives for.
Independence Day 2026 greetings to all fellow Indians fighting for the fullest realisation of the vision enshrined in the Constitution of India.
Salute to all known and unknown martyrs and freedom fighters who gave their all for India’s freedom. | 381 |
| 6 | Homage to the Kashipur-Baranagar martyrs.
Fifty-five years have elpased since the state-sponsored Kashipur-Baranagar massacre (northern outskirts of Kolkata) of young communists on 12-13 August 1971. The notorious SS Ray reign in early 1970s had turned West Bengal into a police state, seeking to crush the Naxalbari upsurge and the communist movement by unleashing serial massacres, fake encounters, illegal detention, custodial torture and state-sponsored street violence.
Today the Modi-Shah regime has institutionalised that police state template across India, using draconian laws, state repression and street thuggery to target not just communists but increasingly the entire range of dissenting voices, the Muslim community and other marginalised social groups. We pay homage to the Kashipur-Baranagar martyrs by pledging to intensify the battle for justice and liberty and to strengthen the resistance against fascism on all fronts. | 340 |
| 7 | On his birth centenary, we remember and salute Fidel Castro, leader of the Cuban Revolution and a towering figure in the global struggle against imperialism. Born on 13 August 1926, Fidel led the Cuban Revolution that overthrew the brutal, US-backed Batista dictatorship and transformed Cuba into a country determined to defend its sovereignty against the full weight of US imperialism.
For decades, Washington sought to isolate, destabilise and destroy revolutionary Cuba. Fidel survived assassination plots and relentless attempts to crush the revolution, standing as a symbol of Cuba’s refusal to bend before imperialist power.
Despite being shackled by imperialist embargoes, Fidel led Cuba to socialism and created systems of universal healthcare and education that shame much more prosperous capitalist countries, including its big-brotherly neighbour, the USA. Not only that, Cuba stretched its own meagre resources to export free healthcare and education to other needy countries of Latin America and the world.
With Fidel at the helm, Cuba supported the anti-colonial struggles, practicing internationalism with all its might. Fidel is especially fondly remembered by the African nations as a true friend who stood firmly with the national liberation struggles of Africa. Cuban troops helped Angola resist aggression by apartheid South African troops and helped Namibia win freedom.
Fidel’s legacy will continue to inspire revolutionaries, socialists and anti-imperialists all over the world. His life remains a testament to the power of resistance, internationalism and the unwavering defence of socialism against imperialism.
Hasta la victoria siempre! ✊🇨🇺🔥 | 264 |

| 9 | Red Salute to Comrade Mahendra Chaudhary! Comrade Mahendra Chaudhary, former Central Committee member and former Rajasthan State Secretary of CPI(ML) Liberation, passed away on 11 August 2026 after a prolonged illness. He had been bedridden for nearly two years following a brain stroke.
Inspired by the Naxalbari peasant uprising, Comrade Mahendra joined the communist movement during his student days in the 1970s. He went to the countryside and began working among peasants in the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan.
Comrade Srilata Swaminathan and Comrade Mahendra Chaudhary worked together as a team under the banner of UCCR(ML) until the 1980s. They subsequently joined CPI(ML) following the party’s successful intervention in the 1989 Lok Sabha elections and the massive mobilisation in Delhi on 8 October 1990. From then on, Comrade Mahendra successfully carried out all responsibilities in the party for as long as his health permitted.
Comrade Mahendra served as the Rajasthan State Secretary for more than two decades. He also worked extensively among tribal communities in the regions of Pratapgarh and Salumbar.
We mourn his passing with deep sorrow and pay our revolutionary respects to a comrade who devoted his life to the communist movement. We pledge to carry forward his dream of a socialist society through a determined struggle against the present fascist regime. | 237 |

| 11 | CPIML, CPI, CPI(M) and other Left parties organised a protest in Dibrugarh, Assam on August 7, against the arrest and detention of indigenous land rights activist Pranab Doley under the draconian National Security Act (NSA). They condemned the use of the NSA to silence democratic voices and demanded Doley’s immediate and unconditional release.
Pranab Doley is being targeted by the Assam BJP government for standing with villagers fighting to protect their land and rights against a proposed luxury resort project on the edge of Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve in Golaghat district. Despite being granted bail by the court, Doley was rearrested under the NSA. | 329 |
| 12 | Having failed to silence the youth movement by unleashing police brutalities, the Sangh brigade has now resorted to street violence and online abuse. The ink attack on AISA President Neha Bora today in Ranchi reveals the Sangh brigade's growing fear of Gen Z and young women activists in particular. Modi's midnight reels and Mohan Bhagwat's much trumpeted GenZ-Gen Alpha outreach cannot hide this ugly reality.
But with every such attack, the resolve of the movement will only grow. Comrade Neha and other AISA leaders who are now on a countrywide GenZ Rising tour and AISA and RYA activists in Jharkhand and all other protesters who are fighting for fresh corruption-free test in Jharkhand and reconstitution of JPSC and JSSC will never be deterred by the Sangh brigade's threats and attacks.

| 13 | 33% RESERVATION NOW — NO MORE DELAYS, NO MORE EXCUSES! The protest in Delhi continues as All India Progressive Women’s Association (AIPWA) and other women’s organisations demand the immediate implementation of 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies, without waiting for delimitation.
Comrades of the AIPWA also held a demonstration in Varanasi, Prime Minister Modi’s constituency, raising the demand for the immediate implementation of women’s reservation in Parliament and State Assemblies. | 435 |
| 14 | A spectre is haunting the RSS–Sangh: the spectre of student–youth unity against fascist and divisive forces!
We strongly condemn the cowardly and shameful attack by Sanghi goons on Comrade Neha, AISA President, and other women protesters in Jharkhand.
While meeting students in Ranchi who are protesting against paper leaks, irregularities, and the massive failures in JPSC, JSSC and other recruitment examinations, Comrade Neha and other women protesters were attacked with ink by right-wing goons.
The BJP regime’s lathis, tear gas, and Sanghi attacks will not silence or weaken the determination of India’s youth. Their voice for a dignified future will only grow louder. | 336 |
| 15 | Jharkhand | CPI(ML) Liberation MLAs Comrade Arup Chatterjee and Comrade Chandra Dev Mahato, along with former Bagodar MLA and RYA National General Secretary Comrade Neeraj Kumar, met with the students and expressed solidarity with their movement at the indefinite sit-in protest site at Jaipal Singh Munda Park, Ranchi.
The protesting aspirants are demanding comprehensive reforms in JPSC, JSSC, and other recruitment examinations, an end to corruption in the recruitment process, greater accountability, and a time-bound recruitment process in accordance with the announced examination calendar. | 366 |
| 16 | CPIML GS Comrade Dipankar said:
Bihari youth's Rajbhavan march in Patna on 22 July was as spirited and powerful as the July 20 ChaloSansad march of Jantar Mantar protesters in Delhi. The BJP-led NDA government of Bihar adopted the same repressive and vindictive approach as the Mo-Sha regime in Delhi. Bihar witnessed indiscriminate arrests, beatings, tear gas shelling and even use of AK 47 assault rifles. But for once this repressive strategy did not work and the governments had to beat a retreat.
In Bihar, former JNUSU General Secretary and now second term CPI(ML) MLA from Paliganj, Comrade Sandeep Saurav was arrested from his MLA residence in brazen violation of all norms and protocols of parliamentary democracy. AISA leaders Dhananjay, Saba Afreen, Dipankar Misra, CPI(ML) leaders Kumar Parvez and Kumar Divyam, and popular CPI(ML) mukhia from Paliganj, Anand were arrested in Patna.
In Siwan former CPI(ML) MLA Amarjit Kushwaha's house was raided and ransacked by the police while CPI(ML) Siwan district committee member Vishal Yadav, and activists Arun Ram, Pawan Kushwaha and Viswakarma Kushwaha were beaten up and detained for days.
While destroying India's education system, the Sangh-BJP brigade is also systematically trying to destroy campus democracy, check progressive student movement and obstruct the rise of political leadership from the student movement. For long the leaders of the historic 1974 movement dominated Bihar politics, but today the BJP wants to pack the political arena with mafia dons, leaders with criminal antecedents and power brokers working for big business houses.
With its firm focus on education and jobs, the Gen Z upsurge will also have to defeat this fascist design of criminalisation and corporatisation of politics and defend the rise of political leadership from the ranks of student movement.
August is the month of India's independence. Defying the BJP's sinister attempt to incriminate the very word 'Azadi', let the spirit of freedom and liberty permeate India once again in this phase of second freedom movement. | 142 |
| 17 | CPI(ML) General Secretary Comrade Dipankar addressed the Sankalp Sabha at Paliganj High School Ground in Bihar, organized against police repression of youth, for better education and dignified employment, for water in canals and housing rights for the poor, and against encounter killings, bulldozer politics, and the regime of police repression. | 152 |

| 19 | SIWAN POLICE FIRING | On August 5, CPI(ML) General Secretary Comrade Dipankar, State Secretary Com. Kunal, AISA leaders Danish Ali, Dhananjay, Saba Afreen, and other CPI(ML)-AISA leaders met the victims and family members of those injured in the brutal police firing during the NEET student-youth protest in Bihar.
Condemning the police violence, the deteriorating law-and-order situation, and state terror against poor people and students, CPI(ML) General Secretary said that the BJP double engine government is attempting to silence voices of dissent and democratic expression while emboldening feudal-mafia forces in the state. | 140 |
| 20 | "My pain will not linger like a spirit in the graveyard,
I am a reckless droplet, ocean's fervour in my heart."
When Saroj Dutta had penned these immortal lines in 1939, he was a young communist of 25 years. Thirty years later, in the wake of the great Naxalbari peasant uprising, he would go on to found the CPI(ML) with Comrades Charu Mazumdar and Kanu Sanyal. He became the editor of Deshabrati, the Bengali organ of the West Bengal State Committee of the CPI (ML). His articles in “Patrikar Duniyaye” (meaning In the World of magazines) in Deshabrati are treated as rare gems in the treasury of Leftist Journalism. He was known as the ideologue of the famous statue breaking movement that rocked the urban life of Bengal in the early seventies.
Two years later, he would be one of the first CPI(ML) leaders to be killed in cold blood by a rattled Indian state without any official record of his arrest and cowardly execution. The first light of the sun was yet to pierce the darkness of the night on that gloomy August 5, 1971 morning on the Kolkata Maidan, the city's much celebrated green lungs.
Salute Comrade Saroj Dutta on his 55th martyrdom anniversary. The revolutionary legacy of this iconic communist stalwart - poet, columnist and inspiring leader - will continue to haunt India's fascist rulers. | 116 |
