Delhi will remember July 20, 2026 for years and years to come, writes CPIML GS Dipankar Bhattacharya https://cpiml.org/mlupdate/delhi-july-20-when-the-streets-came-alive-with-new-hope-and-power-of-the-people

On July 20, 2026, for more than 10 hours, Modi–Amit Shah's police fired hundreds of tear gas shells and brutally assaulted students and youth at every nook and corner of Central Delhi as they demanded the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, accountability, and a better education system. Despite this unprecedented repression, the youth refused to bow. Inquilab Zindabad!

Modi's July 20 war on students and youth in Delhi. Jantar Mantar, Sansad Marg, and Connaught Place—India's capital witnessed a youth uprising today. July 20, 2026 will be remembered as the day when Delhi witnessed one of the most unprecedented crackdowns on tens of thousands of students and youth who had taken to the streets to demand accountability and fight for affordable, inclusive, and quality education. Instead of engaging with their legitimate demands, the Modi government chose repression. Under the directions of the Modi–Amit Shah regime, the Delhi Police unleashed unprecedented violence, firing tear gas, erecting barricades, carrying out baton charges, and using every instrument of state repression to crush the march.

A people’s uprising in Delhi and all across the country Lakhs of people have stormed the streets of Delhi and occupied all the roads leading up to the gates of Parliament demanding the immediate resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. For the past month this demand has echoed across the country and various organisations including CJP, AISA organised protests in city after city after 20 lives were lost due to the NEET paper fiasco. The 23 day fast at Jantar Mantar by CJP’s Sonam Wangchuk and AISA’s Neha, Ameen and Manish galvanized the people to take this demand to the logical end calling today’s protest. The people have answered these calls and gathered in a sea of humanity with the slogans “Inquilab Zindabad”, “Dharmenda Pradan must resign, “Down with the Modi Government”, among others ringing in the air. This carnival of resistance is the true face of democracy in India. CPIML demands that Dharmenda Pradhan must resign immediately, and the Union Government to steer clear of any crackdown on this festival of democracy. The people are at the gates of Parliament demanding accountability and justice, and that is what they will continue to fight for. https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1QfCWxLcNr/

A massive wave of students and youth carrying portraits of Shaheed Bhagat Singh and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar marched from Connaught Place (CP) Circle to the Jantar Mantar protest site, despite attempts by police to stop their movement. The students and youth are joining the July 20 Student-Youth Parliament march, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and an end to corruption in the education system.

On July 18, 2026, the Modi government, along with the Delhi Police, introduced a new item: a white bedsheet to cover up corruption and evade accountability. Using several white bedsheets, Delhi Police personnel kidnapped climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was on a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar demanding accountability for alleged examination corruption and paper leaks, and calling for a better, more equitable education system.

CPI(ML) Liberation strongly condemns the early morning police crackdown on the student-youth movement for justice and accountability at Jantar Mantar, Delhi. The hijacking of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on a hunger strike for 21 days, and the attempted kidnapping of AISA hunger strikers once again expose the Modi-BJP government's deep hostility towards students and youth. The Modi government has resorted to repression because it has no answers to the growing anger against corruption, paper leaks and the systematic destruction of the public education system. Instead of addressing the legitimate demands of the protesters, it has chosen intimidation, force and the suppression of democratic dissent. Despite the forceful removal of Sonam Wangchuk, the students foiled the police's attempt to disrupt the movement. AISA comrades Neha, Manish and Aameen, along with other hunger strikers, are continuing the indefinite hunger strike carrying the struggle forward. We stand with Sonam Wangchuk and salute his courage and determination. We also salute the exemplary strength, resilience and resolve of the student protesters, who have refused to bow before state repression. We call upon all sections of society to unite against this tyranny and join the July 20 Parliament March call given by the student-youth movement, demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the disbanding of the NTA, the scrapping of NEP 2020, an end to corruption and paper leaks in the examination system, and the guarantee of affordable, inclusive and quality education for all. -- Central Committee, Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation

ALERT | Delhi Police - Modi government attempts to crush the student-youth protest at Jantar Mantar, Delhi. Despite the detention of Sonam Wangchuk, AISA leaders Neha, Aameen, and Manish, along with student Hamad, continue their hunger strike on the 21st day. Not an inch back. Dharmendra Pradhan must resign! Shame on Delhi Police and the Modi-BJP government for the crackdown on students.

🚨ALERT! Sonam Wangchuk Forcefully Taken Away by Police. On the early morning of July 18, police in civilian clothes allegedly forcefully whisked away hunger strikers, including Sonam Wangchuk, from Jantar Mantar. After 21 days of peaceful protest demanding justice and accountability amid the education crisis, the response of Modi govt was detentions and crackdowns instead of dialogue. Condemn the inhuman and anti-student-youth attitude of the Modi regime. Unite against this tyranny.

Where is PM Modi? It’s been 20 days since Sonam Wangchuk and students and youth began their hunger strike, demanding justice and accountability. Today, their health is critically deteriorating. Yet neither the Prime Minister nor the BJP has said a single word about the deepening crisis in the education system or responded to the protesters’ demands for accountability and the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

On this day in 1996, the feudal-casteist Ranvir Sena unleashed one of the most horrific massacres in an attempt to crush the assertion of the most marginalised sections of society in Bathani Tola, a hamlet in Bihar's Bhojpur district that had become a flaming field of struggles against feudal-caste oppression. The Bathani Tola massacre foreshadowed the larger feudal-communal carnages that would unfold in the years to come, from Bihar to Gujarat and beyond. Nearly three decades later, justice still eludes the victims of Bathani Tola, as it does those of many other massacres. Today, we are once again witnessing the resurgence of feudal, casteist, communal, and fascist violence targeting the oppressed, marginalised, and minority communities across India. As we remember the martyrs of Bathani Tola, let us renew our pledge to defeat the forces of hatred and oppression that seek to divide society and push the country backwards. Let us strengthen the struggle for justice, equality, democracy, and people's unity.

Comrade R.N. Thakur Will Live On in Our Struggles. We mourn the passing of Comrade R.N. Thakur, veteran leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, Bihar State General Secretary and National Secretary of the All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU). He passed away on 5 July 2026 at the age of 82. For decades, Comrade R.N. Thakur dedicated his life to the struggles of workers, peasants, and the oppressed. A committed communist and an outstanding trade union leader, he played a pivotal role in building the labour movement in Bihar and strengthening AICCTU as a fighting organisation of the working class. His unwavering commitment to social justice, equality, democratic rights, and the cause of working people earned him deep respect among comrades and the masses alike. His passing is an irreparable loss to the Party, the trade union movement, and the democratic movement in India. Red Salute to Comrade R.N. Thakur!
