Directed by Wanda Jakubowska – a communist, resistance fighter and survivor of Auschwitz – the film was among the first cinematic depictions of the Nazi concentration camps and the organised resistance that developed within them. Several Auschwitz survivors appear in the film, portraying roles closely connected to their own real-life experiences just a few years after the liberation, adding a rare and powerful layer of direct testimony to its reconstruction of events. Produced in postwar people's democratic Poland and filmed partly on location at Auschwitz itself, The Last Stage stands as both historical testimony and a forceful affirmation of the role played by communists in the struggle against fascism and genocide. At a time when our ruling class seeks to discredit communists and anti-imperialists as “antisemitic” for expressing solidarity with oppressed peoples and resisting imperialist war, occupation, sanctions and national oppression, this screening reasserted a clear historical record: communists have always been at the forefront of the struggle against racism, fascism, colonialism and war. The CPGB-ML stands firmly against all forms of racism, including antisemitism, while rejecting attempts to weaponise such accusations in order to silence political solidarity and internationalist struggle. This event was part of our party’s wider cultural and political work to defend historical memory, strengthen proletarian internationalism, and uphold the struggle for liberation everywhere. Basque police beating Israeli torture survivors is institutional. These are the same cops who've taken €1.6m in Israeli security contracts, been trained by former Mossad agents, and equipped with Israeli surveillance tech. We note that the relationship between Israeli and western security forces is a circular one. It was the British colonial regime in Palestine which first armed zionist militia and trained then in the use of terroristic and fascistic methods. Britain was then the world leader in violent suppression of colonised peoples, having gained vast experience over many years of putting down unrest from Ireland to Kenya to India and beyond. Today, the Israeli state has become the outsourced frontman for much of the imperialists’ colonial violence. And since its forces have daily experience of the most up-to-date methods of terrorising and coercing civilian populations, they have become the go-to consultants for keeping other parts of the imperial machinery up to date with new methods and technologies. In other words, capitalism cannot feed the world because its priority is profit for a few and not social-need for the many. This poverty is not merely on a national scale but on an international scale. On 11 May 2026, the British government imposed asset-freeze and travel sanctions on the Songdowon International children’s camp in north Korea. This announcement was made alongside a fresh package of financial sanctions targeting Russian entities. The Labour government accused the facility, which is located at a well-known beauty spot near the east coast port city of Wonsan, of “supporting Russia’s programme for the forced deportation and re-education of Ukrainian children”, specifically citing (fabricated) claims that “Ukrainian” youth from the Donbass (“occupied territories”) are being subjected to political indoctrination and anti-western “militarised” education. Since the postwar settlement effectively persuaded Britain’s old Communist party (CPGB) to give up the class struggle and devote its energies to supporting the imperialist Labour party, our trade union movement has been in retreat. A retreat that accelerated into a rout following the defeat of the miners in 1984. The CPGB-ML stands in full solidarity with the people of Kenya, and especially with Kenya’s revolutionary forces, in their just struggle for national liberation from the chains of neocolonial exploitation and control. British workers must recognise the importance of making common cause with all those who struggle against the domination and hyperexploitation of Anglo-American imperialism. As well as facilitating the extraction of superprofits for British, French and US monopoly capital from the Kenyan labour-force, the comprador regime of William Ruto in Nairobi is transforming Kenya’s territory into a strategic base and launchpad for the Nato war machine, which is steadily expanding across the globe as the third world war unfolds.
