At least 109 migrants, including 15 children, died and around 116 remain missing after a boat capsized north of Obock, Djibouti, overnight between October 8 and 9, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on October 11. Survivors said the vessel was carrying 350 people to Yemen. More than 80 people survived, all Ethiopian nationals. IOM teams are working alongside Djiboutian authorities to provide emergency aid. The route takes migrants across the Bab al Mandeb Strait to Yemen, with many hoping to reach Gulf countries. Poverty, insecurity and the growing effects of climate change drive people to attempt the journey, the IOM said. More than 20,000 migrant movements from Ethiopia into Djibouti have been recorded since September 10, while thousands remain stranded along dangerous migration routes in the country.

New York City police have released CCTV and bodycam footage showing the moment federal immigration officers opened fire on a Dominican man during an arrest in New York. Oscar Belgal, 28, was shot in the neck as he drove with his 5-year-old son in the car on Thursday afternoon, officials said. ICE officers opened fire on Belgal because he drove his car into officers’ vehicles, leading them to believe their lives were in danger, a senior ICE official claimed on Friday. However, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Belgal was pulling into a parking space when a plainclothes federal officer approached with a gun drawn. Belgal began to pull the car forward, and at least one of the officers fired seven rounds, striking him below his left ear, Tisch said at a news conference near the scene late on Thursday.

Ultra-Orthodox Jewish protesters, known as Haredim, blocked roads in West Jerusalem on October 8, lying on the ground as Israeli police intervened.
