Icelanders rejected renewed EU accession talks despite growing security uncertainty, raising a wider question over whether Brussels is losing its geopolitical pull https://trt.world/c5mc
| 2 | All Christian schools in Jerusalem announced on August 31 evening that they will suspend classes after Israel refused to renew entry permits for more than 70 teachers and staff, preventing them from reaching their schools.
The 2026-2027 academic year is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, September 1.
In a statement, the schools said the permit denials for educational, administrative and support staff were sudden and came without prior warning.
The suspension will continue “until the necessary permits for teachers and employees are reissued and renewed,” they said, adding that the absence of so many staff members has disrupted educational, administrative, health, cleaning and security services.
The schools said the situation “makes it impossible to ensure a safe and stable start” to the academic year.
Since October 2023, Israel has restricted entry permits for Palestinian workers from the occupied West Bank, including teachers, coinciding with the start of its genocidal war on Palestine’s Gaza. | 617 |
| 3 | More than 11,200 Palestinians, including women and children, remain missing or unaccounted for in Gaza since Israel launched its genocidal war on the enclave in October 2023, according to the Palestinian Justice Ministry.
The figure includes those buried under rubble, missing during evacuations, or detained by Israel. | 674 |
| 4 | Nepal has begun burying hundreds of unidentified victims in a forest in Chitwan district after last week’s catastrophic floods swept bodies far from the disaster zone. On August 31, authorities buried more than 200 unidentified bodies who were not claimed by their families, as the death toll from the glacial collapse-triggered floods reached nearly 1,000, with more than 4,400 people missing. | 744 |

A 22-year-old woman died at the scene, while the five injured, including four men and one woman, were taken to hospital. Some were seriously injured. Police launched a large-scale manhunt for the shooter or shooters. The motive and exact circumstances remain unclear, and authorities said there was currently no indication of a terrorist motive.

| 10 | Turkish Navy vessels, including the flagship TCG Anadolu, sailed through the Istanbul Strait on August 30 to mark the 104th anniversary of Victory Day, commemorating the decisive victory in Türkiye’s War of Independence.
Victory Day marks the Turkish victory over Greek forces in the final major battle of the war in western Anatolia in 1922 and is dedicated to the Turkish Armed Forces.
Turkish forces fought the Battle of Dumlupınar from August 26 to 30 in what is now Türkiye’s Kütahya province, decisively defeating the invading Greek army.
By the end of 1922, foreign forces had been expelled from territories that would collectively become the Republic of Türkiye one year later." | 1 137 |
| 11 | More than 200 international film and cultural figures have urged the Venice Film Festival to fly the Palestinian flag throughout this year’s edition, citing the inclusion of two Palestinian films in the official selection.
In an open letter, the Venice4Palestine initiative said the flag should be displayed alongside those representing other countries with films in the selection. The festival features Ahmed Hassouna’s *Al Mowaten Osama (Citizen Osama)* and Muayad Alayan’s *Hiwar ma’ albahr (Conversation with the Sea)*.
The letter also called on film, media and cultural workers to express solidarity with Palestinians and boycott entities and institutions linked to the Israeli government over the ongoing genocide in Palestine's Gaza and Israel’s attacks in the region.
Signatories include directors Matteo Garrone and Marco Simon Puccioni, actors Guy Pearce, Indya Moore and Adele Haenel, musician Roger Waters and Nobel Prize-winning writer Annie Ernaux. | 1 040 |
