It is good our good PS has been to Eastleigh.
PHOs have a core role in development control / housing, water supply and liquid waste management.
With just 10 months left the PS can still help PHOs deliver better here.
WASH unit covers water supply and liquid waste management.
I am curious how DEH covers development control / housing. - It should be a unit in DEH at least
Or does DEH Occupational Health & Safety unit cover it?
Nairobi County offers the best organogram that has a Development Control unit.
Our good PS can help us:
1. Work with APHOK to ensure all counties pass and make law Kenya Prototype County Environmental Health and Sanitation Bill. - A minority already passed it
2. Amend PHA 242 to empower PHOs in their work.
3. Update the Public Health Act (Cap 242) Building Rules: Modernize outdated sections of Cap 242 to align statutory public health requirements with modern architectural, structural, and environmental standards (wastewater reuse, green building ventilation, and urban density controls).
4. Develop national guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Public Health Plan Vetting and On-site Development Compliance Inspections.
5. Ensure that no development permission - whether for residential complexes, industrial facilities, or commercial centers - is granted without explicit, signed PHO public health compliance certificates (clearance for drainage, waste management, light, and ventilation).
6. Work with PHOTC to recognise Public Health Specialists in Public Health, Community Health, Public Health Engineering, Disaster Management, Occupational Health and Safety, Food Science & Technology, Public Health Law, Epidemiology & Biostatistics, and Health Promotion and Communication for Public Health.
7. She should also wake up PHOTC & APHOK for PHOs webinars. - Some webinars can cover approval of building plans
8. Protect PHOs from political or developer pressure.
9. Push for re-gazetting of Public Health Prosecutors under our acts giving field PHOs stronger legal backing to issue statutory notices, stop orders, and prosecute non-compliant developers in court.
10. Push for EPHIS. - And digitising approval of building plans
11. Support One Health for Bora Afya.
12. Support KMTC HND in Occupational Health & Safety.
13. Support county PHOs with field PHOs inspection toolkits and smartphones with portable water/wastewater testing kits, digital measuring tools, light/air quality monitors, and digital mobile inspection devices. - Through budget allocation or donors
14. Issue periodic policy advisories to CECMs for Health emphasizing the legal necessity of PHO vetting in mitigating urban public health hazards, disease outbreaks, and structural environmental pollution.
Na PS ni mjamo.✌🏿

KMA and PSK are prioritising webinars to train their members on Ebola.
Why aren't we seeing the same initiatives from APHOK or SOCHE? - They don't even have representation in EVD Taskforce too
Who trains the CHAs online through webinars? - Already kuna eCHIS Ebola updates or expected activities
If you ask SOCHE or CHESOA they will share you about their CPD plans.
Who trains the PHOs online?
Are we waiting we be grouped as others then react?
Kindly answer me.

OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUNG PUBLIC HEALTH OFFICERS
The Public Service Commission has advertised 6,000 internship slots (Cohort 2) under the Affordable Housing Programme, State Department for Housing and Urban Development. One of the professional areas is Health and Safety (Degree level, 300 slots), which is a great fit for us as PHOs.
Quick details:
✅ Degree holders who graduated 2020 or later
✅ Computer proficiency required
✅ Must not have benefited from a similar programme
✅ 12 months, non-renewable, with a stipend
✅ Certificate on completion
⏰ Deadline: 9th November 2026
🌐 Apply at www.publicservice.go.ke or www.psckjobs.go.ke .
What a Occupational Health and Safety Officer does on site🦺
1. Conduct daily site inspections and walkthroughs
2. Carry out hazard identification and risk assessments
3. Conduct toolbox talks and OSH inductions for workers
4. Ensure workers use proper PPE
5. Monitor work at height, excavation, scaffolding, electrical and machinery safety
6. Investigate and report accidents, incidents and near misses
7. Maintain OSH records, registers and monthly reports
8. Support compliance with OSHA 2007 and DOSHS requirements
9. Monitor site sanitation, drinking water, waste management and welfare facilities
10. Coordinate first aid, fire safety and emergency preparedness
11. Support environmental compliance and EIA/ESIA monitoring
12. Liaise with contractors, supervisors and regulators
Learn, earn and conquer 💡: This is a chance to get real site experience, document your skills, and get paid while you do it.
PHOs are already making their mark 🏗️
In Cohort 1, there are 47 verified PHO interns serving as Health and Safety Officers on Affordable Housing Programme sites. The space is ours to claim, and Cohort 2 is your chance to join us.
My own experience as part of Cohort 1:
I am part of Cohort 1 of this programme, serving as a Occupational Health and Safety intern on an Affordable Housing Programme site. After about 4 months, due to volume of work load by the 5th month, I had negotiated with the contractor to be engaged as a full-time OSH Officer. I have since grown to become a NEMA-licensed EIA/ESIA/EA associate expert, and I now carry out these assessments on AHP projects. None of it would have happened if I had not taken the first step and shown up ready to learn and deliver.
Think beyond the stipend. Housing sites expose you to OSH, environmental health, sanitation, EIA/ESIA and compliance work. With 300 slots in this category, it's a chance to build a niche as a PHO and grow into a specialist.
Don't sit back and wait. Apply early, prepare your documents, and make yourself visible on site. Learn, then conquer.
