Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni today hosted local leaders from Kikima, Mbooni Sub-County in Makueni County, led by Mr. Joseph Ndavi, who presented a memorandum seeking the establishment of a Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) campus in the area. The leaders noted that the community has already invested in facilities intended to host the campus and has sustained the initiative for more than a decade.
To advance the proposal, the Principal Secretary said the Ministry of Health will undertake a technical inspection of the facilities, support necessary improvements, and work towards the accreditation and operationalization of the campus. She commended the leaders for their commitment to the initiative and reaffirmed the Ministry’s support for viable, community-driven health training institutions.
Also present at the meeting was Dr. Andrew Mulwa, Head of NASCOP in the Ministry of Health.
For the avoidance of doubt and notable lacuna, read PHOTC law with other relevant laws of Kenya.
A PHO is a standards officer by default of registration and licencing by PHOTC.
If you're a government PHO, you should go beyond bare minimums as someone with authority to enforce Public Health standards. This is a non-negotiable professional responsibility whether the law is clear or not.
Law is subject to improvement and doesn't always apply in isolation.
A PHO looking for employment or consultancy opportunities, you don't have to wait for the law for you to keep your professional authenticity and authority. This is not an advice or a fear message. You choose your world.
Meanwhile, "professionals" can do better through formal enquiries, especially with regulators like PHOTC.
