11	+4 The junta also has a brown water navy which they have actual use for however this is largely left underfunded likely due to the lack of prestige that comes with their production in the eyes of the military leadership. The Irrawaddy has an important use as a way of safely transporting resources mined in the remote north and east of the country to Yangon from which they can be exported. Additionally it's a vital supply line to towns that are cut off via land. As an example the junta's control over the Irrawaddy played a massive role in the battle of Bhamo where the cut off garrison was only kept alive via resupply from the river. Due to the civil war rebel forces have begun raiding both the commercial vessels transporting the resources as well as any junta combat ships escorting the commercial vessels or supply ships. 13	+1 The Tatmadaw's obsession with their navy is no new phenomenon Here is a 135 meter frigate that was unveiled earlier this year. The Burmese military doesn't really have any practical use for these large ships as they are unable to navigate the inland rivers however they keep building them. My personal take/opinion on this is that it's a prestige thing for the Tatmadaw. The Tatmadaw has long followed autarkic policies where they wish to produce everything the military needs at home. This can be seen with their various cheap copies of foreign weapons like the Galil, G-3 etc. So in order to show off the successes of their own production prioritization they build the biggest vessels they feasibly are capable of building. This is rather impractical since the Tat's blue water navy is useless against the vast majority of rebel groups which are deep inland while simultaneously being too weak to face off against their neighbors navies. At the end of the day it's a collosal waste of resources on vanity projects	464

I have previously reported on the junta obsession with their navy and how they dump large amounts of cash on oversized impractical warships however they have never before built a submarine. It's unclear if this is a standalone project or a cooperation with A: The Russian navy. The branch of the Russian military closest to its Burmese counterpart or B: North Korea who themselves have their own domestic submarine production.	18 849
