❤️The remnants of the Wagner PMC have entrenched themselves in the upper reaches of the Ubangi River in the Central African Republic (CAR), where they have effectively created a drug empire out of the reach of law enforcement and even the Kremlin, The Wall Street Journal writes. The publication states that the group's veterans are led by Yevgeny Prigozhin's son, Pavel Prigozhin.
Details: Tramadol, the trade of which has become the foundation of the remaining Wagner PMC forces' business in the CAR, can act as a stimulant when taken in high doses and is often referred to as "poor man's cocaine," the WSJ writes. The publication notes that while the recommended dose of tramadol is usually between 50 and 100 mg, pills containing 200 mg or more of the active ingredient are widely sold throughout the CAR.
After a series of setbacks, the tramadol trade has given Wagner a new boost, the WSJ writes. Following Yevgeny Prigozhin's death in a 2023 plane crash and the transfer of most of the group's operations under the control of Russian state structures, up to 500 fighters remained in the upper reaches of the Ubangi in the CAR. Controlling the tramadol trade allows them to exploit the country's timber and gold resources. According to estimates by the Geneva-based think tank Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime, illicit gold exports bring Wagner about $180 million a year, and smuggling the painkiller into neighboring countries provides an additional source of income.
❤️Tramadol is taken by miners at Wagner-controlled gold mines, participants in demonstrations supporting the Russian presence in the region, and militants involved in the country's years-long armed conflict. Data from Uppsala University shows that the rise in the drug's use coincided with a nearly 20% increase in the number of deaths in battles over the CAR's mineral-rich areas, reaching approximately 500 people over the past year.
❤️In recent months, Wagner veterans and their allies have further consolidated their control over this business, according to researchers and merchants from the CAR capital, Bangui. The influence of Russian mercenaries has grown so much that they supply tramadol to presidential guard fighters and the Sharks youth militia, which regularly organizes armed patrols in Bangui and beats up opposition supporters, a former Wagner PMC employee living in Europe stated.
❤️Russia managed to take control of a significant portion of the Wagner PMC's business, but doing so in the CAR proved much more difficult. The WSJ writes that this is partly due to the country's remoteness and because the remnants of the group had already deeply entrenched themselves in the local political system. Today, the former structure of the Wagner PMC has effectively subjugated the state, according to research by the Pentagon-funded Africa Center for Strategic Studies. The WSJ notes that Russian mercenaries are integrated into the CAR national army and local armed groups.
Pavel Prigozhin, who heads the group, uses its accumulated knowledge of local law enforcement agencies and the security system. Russian mercenaries use smuggling routes and redirect trade flows to maintain control over key resources, including the Ubangi River.

Of particular concern is Sudan, where the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are strengthening their positions in the southern and western parts of the country located close to the CAR.
