| 9 | I couldn’t help comparing Emily with Anne. While similar, they are hardly the same.. They are both orphans, and trying to make a place for themselves in the world. Both are ambitious regardless of what others think of them. Both admire the world’s beauty while trying to blot out the light of cynicism. Besides, Emily is more cynical, and can’t find any way to get out of the depressing bubble other than writing. Which is valid, but that doesn’t work all the time. I loved how Emily is determined to achieve what she wants regardless of judgements. Of course, I didn’t like most of her relationships by the end of the novel because she seemed to me such a stupid girl. I’m pretty sure her relationship with Mr. Dumb is inappropriate.. he was manipulative and cruel. I loved Emily even a bit as Anne..they both resemble me in varying ways. Do I need to mention how I enjoyed this read and how Lucy never has disappointed me whatsoever? It’s an episodic, charming,heartwarming story that has been a definite comfort to me the past couple of weeks.. Thank you Lucy for writing such stories inspired by your own life, and by my life also.. for creating characters who also see there is beauty in this harsh world.. | 208 |
| 10 | Have you ever read a story that you really relate to? Have you ever felt that this writer, whose life circumstances were similar to yours in a way, is the one who understands you fully? Without further ado, I’d say all that you are about to read has been shaped by how I resonated with the protagonist..
The trilogy follows Emily, the child whose mother died when she was four, who is about to lose the only person who really cares for her—who encourages her and has been a rock that no storm in the whole world could wreck. Emily of New moon follows her childhood and her very first attempts at writing..the first book is full of misspellings in the letters Emily writes for her father, giving this part the real ambiance of juvenile literature. I loved the relationship between her and aunt Elizabeth, who is a strict woman, who takes care of Emily just for the sake of duty. But, day after day, their relationship developed beautifully with Emily growing up&Elizabeth’s growing understanding of Emily..aunt Laura is this kind of woman who doesn’t know any other way to express herself or solve problems other than by crying. Nevertheless, I loved her..she really loves Emily. The character I liked the most is cousin Jimmy.. I can see Feste, Shakespeare’s fool in Twelfth Night, whatever he says, it’s true. His judgements always carry some weight, giving him the role of a wise person. Also, I loved how he loves Emily, providing her every now and then with notebooks to write in.. in our lifetime, we will have someone like cousin Jimmy..someone who loves us the way we are..someone who never hesitates to give us the green light to continue dreaming..
Settled in her lovely surroundings writing herself out, Emily enters the second book of the trilogy. Emily grows up not only in age terms,but also in writing terms. She starts to make her mark, believing that she has something to create for the world. Some of her stories and poems meet success, but failure inevitably always finds its way to her. Gradually, she noticeably has been climbing the hill of publishing success, leading aunt Elizabeth to change her mind about Emily’s foolishness. What’s lovely the most about this chapter, or even the whole trilogy, is the appealing combination between Emily’s diary entries with the narrator; however, this time misspellings have disappeared, which really turns the childlike tone of Emily’s style into a more teenage one. What I didn’t like is her relationship with Mr.( whose name i won’t mention to avoid spoilers). Is Emily ignorant , or just pretentious? She is grown up enough to know he doesn’t love her as a friend, yet she doesn’t seem to want to know the actual truth. In this book, it was difficult for me to realize that sometimes we have to lose our dear friends because of our different paths in life. The more we grow up, the more we realize that being adults means letting go..
With high school, her childhood and her teenage years also behind her, L.M.M. sets the dark, depressing tone for the third and final book in Emily’s trilogy. The plot was by no means what you’d expect from LMM. Every line in this book makes it gloomier than ever before.. Furthermore, her friend becomes selfish and silly. She is aware of everything, but pretends to have no idea about it. It beats me how Emily still considers her a friend. What about her relationship with Teddy? Oh my lord, please are you for real? They seem more childish now than they did when they were real children! They don’t know how to communicate with each other and can’t even try to speak up.. Maybe this is what happens when you are in your early twenties, lol. You couldn’t understand yourself enough in a way that enables others to connect with you. On the whole, it was too unrealistic for Emily to have these kinds of relationships as an adult. | 238 |
