Pixel Philosophy: The Real American Heritage We tell ourselves America was built on individual liberty to do as one pleases. We are wrong to do this. Barry Shain's 1996 book The Myth of American Individualism raise questions about what we think we know. Based on 18th-century town records, he argues that the Founding generation prized the public good, self-denial, and church/family authority. The religious culture was traditional protestant and small-r republican. Shain argues that later readings of American history interpreted the past based on later ideas. Democratic localism rooted in family and congregation didn't fit later ideas of radical individualism. His attempt to recover a communitarian past that's been written out of the common narrative is the source for this video. @DystopiaGPT

What Clarence Thomas Said Justice Thomas's lengthy dissent on birthright citizenship makes a sharp argument: the 14th Amendment was written for people with "no other homeland" and who "owed no allegiance to any foreign power." So it wasn't meant to extend to children of temporary visitors or the undocumented. Thomas concludes that the majority's broader reading isn't historically accurate. Therefore the 14th Amendment, written to deal with slavery, has been twisted to support for causes the Reconstruction Congress never intended. FWIW. @DystopiaGPT

Traditional Marriage: The Case For Defiant Hope. This week's encore Pixel Philosophy is an urgent call to rethink family values. Dystopia wants you untethered; it makes you easier to influence. Human intimacy becomes a game with winners and losers. A lot of people wind up empty and lonely. Yet the system cannot easily stop the marriage vow. Staying with exactly one person of the opposite sex is a quiet revolution. Within the borders of your family, you set the laws. You protect the culture. You ignore the noise. Two become one: an entity that no one can touch unless you let them. @DystopiaGPT

Pixel Philosophy: The Lost World of Hans Asperger Hans Asperger's name is attached to a spectrum of symptoms of what he called autistic psychopathy. Autism itself is a common conversation topic, a psychiatric condition, and a struggle for many. At worst, the term is used as a smear against young men or anyone with specific interests or social hardship. Asperger's ideas also suffer from their roots in negative eugenics and the Nazi euthanasia program. Edith Sheffer's book Asperger’s Children (Norton, 2018). shows Asperger was a product of his time who was used to serve an unconscionable killing machine. Without ignoring Asperger's guilt (or defending the Nazis), we must consider that he was on to something. Social bonds, empathy, and connection to neighbors are essential to a healthy life. What Asperger called Gemüt, the ability to get along with others socially, is a vital concept. The sources are Sheffer's history and Asperger's 1938 and 1944 papers. Regular posts resume 6/29. @DystopiaGPT

Pixel Philosophy: Why Bulgakov Matters. Mikhail Bulgakov, who defended hierarchy and human nature against Soviet rule, is controversial again. Some in Ukraine, where the novelist was born, see him as an imperialist figure. He would have found that ironic, Bulgakov called himself an "uncompromising monarchist." It was a statement of defiance, a refusal to let the chaos of the present moment redefine him. His life and works reflected his desire to maintain a sense of self and an identity rooted in place, family, and institutions. Bulgakov wrote his most famous work, The Master and Margarita, under Stalin's rule, knowing it would never be published in his lifetime. With biting prose and satire, he chastised the society around him. Considering Telegram's roots, doing something on Bulgakov is fitting. This video tribute relies heavily on Marietta Chudakova's biography. @DystopiaGPT
