WORMS 🪱 — CAN THEY ENTER THE BRAIN? Many people have heard frightening stories like: "Ordinary worms can travel from the stomach into the brain." Is this really true? The answer is Yes—but not all worms. Let's explain. Can worms enter the brain? Most common intestinal worms (like roundworms, pinworms, and hookworms) remain inside the intestines and never reach the brain. However, some specific parasites can spread to the brain under certain conditions. Examples include: - Pork tapeworm (Taenia solium) - Toxocara (dog or cat roundworm) - Echinococcus (hydatid tapeworm) These are not the same as the common worms many people treat at home. How do they get there? Some parasite eggs are swallowed through contaminated food, water, or dirty hands. After hatching, the larvae can enter the bloodstream and travel to different organs—including the brain. What can happen? When these parasites reach the brain, they may cause: - Persistent headaches - Seizures (fits) - Confusion - Weakness of part of the body - Vision problems - Increased pressure inside the skull In some people, there may be no symptoms for months or even years. Does every worm infection spread to the brain? No. Most worm infections never reach the brain and can be treated successfully with the correct deworming medicine. Brain involvement is uncommon and usually occurs with certain parasites or after swallowing their eggs. Can it be prevented? Yes. You can reduce your risk by: - Washing your hands before eating. - Cooking pork thoroughly. - Washing fruits and vegetables properly. - Drinking clean water. - Deworming pets regularly. - Taking deworming medicines only when appropriate and as advised by a healthcare professional. Important If someone has repeated seizures, severe headaches, or unexplained neurological symptoms—especially in areas where these parasites are common—they should seek medical care promptly. Omeprazole + Cimetidine — Can They Be Taken Together? Many people with ulcers or severe heartburn take Omeprazole and Cimetidine at the same time. Some even believe: "If one reduces acid, taking two together must work better." But is that true? Let's simplify it. What Does Omeprazole Do? Omeprazole belongs to a group of medicines called Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs). It works by blocking the acid pumps in the stomach, greatly reducing the amount of acid produced. It is commonly used for: - Peptic ulcers. - Acid reflux (GERD). - Gastritis. - H. pylori treatment (with antibiotics). - Protection against ulcers caused by some painkillers. Its effect lasts for about 24 hours or longer. What Does Cimetidine Do? Cimetidine belongs to another group called H₂-receptor blockers (H₂ blockers). It also reduces stomach acid, but it works by blocking histamine (H₂) receptors that stimulate acid production. It is used for: - Ulcers. - Heartburn. - Acid reflux. However, it is generally less potent than Omeprazole. So What's the Problem? Both medicines are trying to achieve the same goal—reducing stomach acid. For most people: • Taking them together offers little or no additional benefit over using Omeprazole alone. Instead, it may: - Increase unnecessary medication use. - Increase the risk of side effects. - Increase treatment costs. Another Important Issue Cimetidine interacts with many medicines. It can increase the levels of drugs such as: - Warfarin. - Phenytoin. - Theophylline. - Some antidepressants. This makes Cimetidine a medicine that should be used with caution. Are They Ever Used Together? Sometimes, a specialist may prescribe an H₂ blocker at bedtime for selected patients who still produce excess stomach acid overnight despite daytime PPI treatment. ረቂቅ መመሪያው COC ሳይፈተኑ ዲግሪ ለወሰዱ ከ2010 እስከ 2015 ዓ.ም ተመራቂዎች የተዘጋጀ ነው። - የትምህርትና ስልጠና ባለሥልጣን ም/ዋ/ዳይሬክተር ከመስከረም 2ዐ1ዐ ዓ.ም እስከ 2015 ዓ.ም ባለው ጊዜ ውስጥ የመውጫ ፈተና ሳይፈተኑ የመጀመሪያ፣ ሁለተኛ እና ሦስተኛ ዲግሪ የያዙ ተመራቂዎች የመውጫ (COC) ፈተና እንዲፈተኑ የሚያደርግ ረቁቅ መመሪያ በትምህርት ሚኒስቴር ተዘጋጅቷል። በረቂቅ ማሻሻያው ላይ የትምህርት ማኅበረሰቡ እና ባለድርሻ አካላት አስተያየት እንዲሰጡበት የትምህርትና ስልጠና ባለሥልጣን መጠየቁ ይታወቃል። COC ሳይፈተኑ ዲግሪ የወሰዱ ከ2010 እስከ 2015 ዓ.ም ተመራቂዎች ሲባል ረቂቅ መመሪያው መዘጋጀቱን የትምህርትና ስልጠና ባለሥልጣን ምክትል ዋና ዳይሬክተር ሽሻይ አማረ (ዶ/ር) ለሪፖርተር ተናግረዋል፡፡ ከዲፕሎማ ወደ ዲግሪ ትምህርት ለመቀጠል የሲኦሲ ማረጋገጫ መኖር አንዱ መሠረታዊ መስፈርት ቢሆንም፣ ይህ ሳይሟላ ቀርቶ ለማረጋገጥ የተቸገሩ በመኖራቸው፣ መፍትሔ ለማግኘት ሲባል ረቂቅ ማሻሻያው መዘጋጀቱን ገልፀዋል። ባለሥልጣኑ መመርያውን ተፈጻሚ የሚያደርጉት ባለድርሻ አካላት በመሆናቸው የሚመለከታቸው በሙሉ በረቂቁ ላይ ያላቸውን ሃሳብና ማሻሻያ እስከ ሐምሌ 13/2018 ዓ.ም በተዘጋጀ ድረ-ገፅ አስተያየት እንዲሰጡ መጠየቁን ጠቁመዋል፡፡ ማሻሻያው በዋናነት ለዲግሪ መግቢያ መስፈርት የተቀመጠውን የደረጃ አራት የብቃት ማረጋገጫ ፈተና ሳይወስዱ በቀጥታ በዲግሪ ተምረው የተመረቁትን ወይም በዲግሪ ለመማር ከተመዘገቡ በኋላ የደረጃ አራት የብቃት ማረጋገጫ ፈተና የወሰዱትን፣ በአገር ውስጥ በሚንቀሳቀሱ ማናቸውም የመንግሥት እና የግል የከፍተኛ ትምህርት ተቋማት ውስጥ ያለፉ ተመራቂዎችን በሙሉ እንደሚያጠቃልል በመመሪያው ተገልጿል። @tikvahuniversity
