🌿 Kandu Maharshi's austerities were extraordinary. In summer, he meditated surrounded by blazing fires, while in winter he remained immersed in icy water, never wavering from his penance.
🌸 His unwavering discipline amazed the gods, Gandharvas, Siddhas, and Vidyadharas. Across the three worlds, his penance became a subject of admiration.
🌿 As always, Indra feared that a great sage might one day surpass him. Disturbed by Kandu Maharshi's growing spiritual power, he summoned the celestial nymph Pramlocha and ordered her to break the sage's penance.
🌸 Though reluctant, Pramlocha dared not disobey Indra. He assured her that Kamadeva, the season of spring, and cool fragrant breezes would aid her mission.
🌿 The moment she entered the hermitage, spring awakened. Trees burst into bloom, flowers carpeted the earth, and Kamadeva released his flower-arrow.
🌸 When Kandu Maharshi opened his eyes and beheld Pramlocha, his long years of penance were forgotten, and he became captivated by her beauty.
🌿 They lived together for one hundred years. Though Pramlocha repeatedly wished to return to the celestial world, the sage would not permit her to leave.
🌸 At last, through yogic vision, Kandu Maharshi realized Indra's deception. "You have interrupted my penance," he said, "yet the fault is not yours, for you came only under Indra's command. I shall not curse you. Go in peace."
🌿 Their daughter, Marisha, later married the Prachetas, and their son was the renowned Daksha Prajapati.
🌸 Filled with remorse, Kandu Maharshi departed for Purushottama Kshetra and began an even more intense penance than before.
🌿 Pleased with his devotion, Lord Mahavishnu appeared and invited him to ask for a boon.
🌸 The sage offered heartfelt prayers and said, "O Lord, help me cross this ocean of worldly existence and grant me Your eternal abode."
🌿 Lord Mahavishnu blessed him with liberation and disappeared.
🌸 Kandu Maharshi is also known as Kanthu Maharshi.
🌿 Though an exalted ascetic, he briefly succumbed to Maya. Yet by recognizing his mistake, repenting sincerely, and returning to intense spiritual practice, he ultimately attained the lotus feet of Lord Hari.
🌸 The lesson is timeless: even when ignorance leads us astray, true greatness lies in recognizing our mistake, sincerely repenting, correcting our path, and never repeating the same error.
