"Path Through a Ravine," 1887 Artist: Mikhail Anatolyevich Mamontov Canvas, oil; 57×51 cm State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow Mikhail Mamontov was the son of Anatoly Mamontov, a printing press owner, and nephew of Savva Mamontov—the renowned patron and founder of the Abramtsevo artistic circle. From childhood, the young artist was immersed in the creative energy of these vibrant artistic households. For many years, he studied painting privately under Alexander Alexandrovich Kiselyov. Later, his progress drew the attention of leading realist masters, including Ilya Repin and Vasily Polenov. The painting Path Through a Ravine was created shortly after Mamontov’s trip to Italy with his friends Valentin Serov and Ilya Ostroukhov.
