"Path Through a Ravine," 1887 Artist: Mikhail Anatolyevich Mamontov Canvas, oil; 57×51 cm State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow Mikhail Mamontov was the son of Anatoly Mamontov, a printing press owner, and nephew of Savva Mamontov—the renowned patron and founder of the Abramtsevo artistic circle. From childhood, the young artist was immersed in the creative energy of these vibrant artistic households. For many years, he studied painting privately under Alexander Alexandrovich Kiselyov. Later, his progress drew the attention of leading realist masters, including Ilya Repin and Vasily Polenov. The painting Path Through a Ravine was created shortly after Mamontov’s trip to Italy with his friends Valentin Serov and Ilya Ostroukhov. Inspired by the masterpieces of Western European art they encountered, the young artist returned energized and painted one of his finest landscapes. Oil & canvas

"Portrait of Alexandra Alexeyevna Venetsianova", 1826 Artist: Alexei Grigoryevich Venetsianov Canvas, oil; 40.4×32.6 cm State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow After his wife’s passing, the artist tenderly cared for his two daughters — elder Sasha and younger Felitsata — loving them deeply, finding joy in their growth and sorrow in their illnesses: “My little ones comfort me with their progress and innocent affections.” Alexandra showed early artistic talent and began drawing and painting under her father’s guidance. Later, she wrote detailed memoirs about him — a heartfelt tribute that lovingly captures the image of a gifted, humble, noble, and wise man, deeply cherished and respected by all who knew him. #Art #Portrait #Venetsianov #RussianArt #TretyakovGallery Oil & canvas

Window, 1886 Artist: Viktor Elpidiforovich Borisov-Musatov Canvas, oil; 62.5×47 cm State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow Borisov-Musatov depicts the window of a one-story annex in Saratov, where his family lived on a modest square grandly named Platz-parade. Behind the house lay a garden that, from childhood, became a wellspring of inspiration for the artist. Throughout his brief life, he would create plein-air sketches there—studies later used in larger compositions. The artist renders on canvas every visible detail with precision: the lush green foliage dotted with white, red, and pink blossoms, the slightly ajar bluish shutters, the wide-open white window frames, and the parted lace curtains framing the view. "Terrace at Saint-Adresse", 1867 Artist: Oscar-Claude Monet Oil on canvas; 98×130 cm The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
"Terrace at Saint-Adresse", 1867 Artist: Oscar-Claude Monet Oil on canvas; 98×130 cm The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York The painting’s composition is strikingly original—defined by a high vantage point and the absence of a clear focal center. In the foreground, seated in a chair to the right, is the artist’s father, Adolphe. Slightly to the left, with her back turned to the viewer, a woman relaxes under an umbrella—either Monet’s aunt, Madame Lecadre, or his sister, Sophie. In front of them stands Monet’s cousin, Jeannne Marguerite, accompanied by a young man. The vast expanse of sea is dotted with sailboats of all sizes. Together with a sky divided between cloud-covered and clear sections, the terrace itself occupies half the scene, blooming with vibrant gladioli and nasturtiums. The vivid color palette is further heightened by two flags, subtly asymmetrical in placement, flanking either side of the terrace. #Impressionism #Monet #MetropolitanMuseum Oil & canvas
