The State Russian Museum is now on Telegram! It’s more than a collection of paintings—it’s the soul of a nation and a reflection on its history. We, the Russian people, are rooted in the past. Our artistic heritage reaches back through the ages, and the spirit of ancient talents still hovers over our ancient land. Oil & canvas

“Interior of the Moulin de la Galette” — Ramon Casas Price: $51,000 While Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec depicted this Montmartre hangout as a vibrant celebration, Casas offered a stark contrast: dim light, muted colors, deep shadows and figures lost in thought. Historians link its somber mood to Casas’s pessimism and his close friend Santiago Rusiñol, rather than Impressionist exuberance. In winter 1890, Casas moved into the Moulin de la Galette with Rusiñol and Miquel Utrillo. Their apartment was above the dance hall, in a complex with a restaurant, garden and windmill. They explored bohemian Montmartre and wrote about Paris for Barcelona’s La Vanguardia. Part of a series from Casas’s third Paris stay, this work has a larger counterpart at the Cau Ferrat Museum in Sitges. It debuted at Sala Parés in Barcelona in 1891 and appeared in a major Paris solo exhibition organized by Utrillo in 1900. Oil & canvas

⚡️The election is over, and VPNs are starting to go down one by one. In the past week, Beeline, T2, and MegaFon have announced new restrictions. ✅ A new VPN is available in Russia that disguises its traffic as regular internet activity, making it difficult for mobile operators to detect or interfere with its use. It’s called Boost - VPN. The service updates its infrastructure and works on improvements every day. Telegram, WhatsApp, Instagram, and YouTube all work over mobile data. Oil & canvas

“The Adoration of the Magi” — Geertgen tot Sint Jans “Tot Sint Jans” means roughly “of Saint John.” Geertgen lived at the Haarlem residence of the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem, perhaps as a lay brother, and may have taken his nickname there. He was never formally admitted to the order. Almost nothing is known about him; the only source is art historian Karel van Mander, writing more than a century after Geertgen’s death. Van Mander says he died at 28. Geertgen gives the Magi story a two-layered composition: Melchior, Caspar and Balthasar offer gifts to Christ in the foreground, while each arrives in the city with a lavish entourage behind them. X-rays revealed that Geertgen first painted Melchior’s European retinue on horses, then replaced them with camels. Only 10–16 of Geertgen’s works survive, mostly biblical scenes. Nearly all are held in leading museums, rare examples of early Netherlandish art. Oil & canvas

The Birth of Venus — after François Boucher Price: $72,000 The painting in London’s Wallace Collection is a later version of an oval composition Boucher first painted in 1743; the original is now in a private New York collection. The London variation was made by Boucher or his workshop on commission. Boucher returned to Venus’s birth throughout his career. Major versions are now in museums in Stockholm, Washington and Tokyo. An avid shell collector, he helped establish the giant scallop shell as a defining feature of the scene. He often used his wife, Marie-Jeanne, as Venus’s model. Admirers saw a resemblance between her and Madame de Pompadour, whom Boucher painted in portraits and mythological scenes. The Wallace Collection grew from the collecting passion of Richard Seymour-Conway, 4th Marquess of Hertford. It holds one of the world’s richest collections of Boucher’s Rococo art. Oil & canvas

“Crab on Its Back” — Vincent van Gogh Price: $145,000 The date is uncertain: the Van Gogh Museum places it in autumn 1887 in Paris or January 1889 in Arles, after his hospital stay. That January, Van Gogh told his brother Theo he planned to resume painting still lifes; this crab may have been one. Crabs were rare in European still lifes but common in Japanese prints, which Van Gogh loved. He and Theo collected hundreds of woodblocks, and Hokusai depicted crabs from unusual angles. A print Theo sent Vincent may have inspired the work. The vivid red crab against green reflects Van Gogh’s interest in complementary colors. Influenced by Eugène Delacroix and critic Charles Blanc, he believed contrasting colors could intensify a painting. “Two Crabs” shows one crab on its back and another upright. Researchers suspect Van Gogh painted the same dead crab twice, turning it over; details closely match. Oil & canvas
