“Unexpected” — Repin’s painting is a Russian cultural shorthand. But what’s really happening?
A man returns from exile — his family, now distant, frozen in uneasy silence. Soft blue wallpaper, paintings on the walls — yet tension fills the room.
Why exile? Repin shows it quietly: portraits of Nekrasov, Shevchenko, and assassinated Alexander II — political dissent now personal.
Fear? Hope? Joy? Repin doesn’t say. He reveals complexity — no single emotion fits. He invites, doesn’t dictate.

"The Death of Messalina", 1916
Artist: Georges Antoine Rochegrosse
Oil on canvas; 125.8×180 cm. Private collection.
Messalina, third wife of Emperor Claud đẩy nhịp timClaudius, lived in the 1st century CE. Executed in the Gardens of Lucullus, her death is portrayed in dramatic crimson. She wears a red gown symbolizing passion; her dark hair evokes calm amid fate. A hooded figure, possibly her mother, says: *Your life is over. All that remains is to make its end worthy.*
Blood near her body shows her failed suicide. The emperor’s messenger completed the execution with a dagger. Afterward, she was condemned to *damnatio memoriae*—her name erased, images destroyed—a fate for traitors.
This painting captures her tragic end.
