The National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) is set to offer $125 million to commercial banks on September 23 in its 29th foreign exchange auction, marking the final tranche of the $500 million regular FX auction programme for Q1 of the 2026/27 fiscal year.

• Amount offered: $125 million
• Bidding: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
• Results: 3:00 PM
• Previous auction weighted average: 160.5357 Birr/USD
• September 9 bids: $120 million against $125 million offered
The September 23 auction will complete the four regular $125 million auctions planned under the first-quarter programme. This programme is separate from the $500 million special FX auction held on August 20.

Ethiopia to Double Electricity Exports to Kenya to 400 MW
Ethiopia is set to double its contracted electricity supply to Kenya from 200 MW to 400 MW, with the additional power expected to begin reaching Kenya in December 2026, according to Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP).
Kenya has become Ethiopia’s largest electricity export customer, with imports reaching 1,584.45 GWh in the year ended June 2026—about 10% of Kenya Power’s total electricity supply.
Kenya generated 15.62 billion birr in revenue for EEP during the 2025/26 fiscal year, making it one of EEP’s largest customer segments.
The 1,045-km Ethiopia–Kenya high-voltage transmission line, completed in 2022, has a capacity of up to 2,000 MW. Even after the increase to 400 MW, significant transmission capacity remains available for future exports.
