By entering criminal law, Vallabhbhai chose a field with maximum scope for wit, quick judg-ment, and forceful personality. He explained that reading law provided the least expensive, quickest path to a lucrative career. He spent ten years, 1900-1910, successfully practising in the various courts of central Gujarat. His District Pleader’s certificate, however, did not allow him to practise in higher courts. He, therefore, decided to pursue further training in London’s Middle Temple, 1910-12, reaffirming his willingness to complete the work necessary to success.
